information on it here. i'm going to be in DC, so maybe we can get a posse going in a clearing and then head to some all-night diner when it's all done ... ?

― maura, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry to say that it apparently will only be visible on MY side of the world ...

― maura, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nah, it'll probably turn out to be a shower anyway.

― Trevor, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fuggin work. how many more weekends can it ruin for me?

― jess, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Leonids been a dud for a few years now. The best US soil it can be viewed from this year is Gaum. Which sucks cause that means by the time it hits the right coast its going to be kinda dull.

― Mr Noodles, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

strangely we saw one from our bedroom window last night in london as we were dozing off.

― marianna, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my flatmate is going to be in Hong Kong over the weekend and is very excited about watching it. I did see a shooting star in Chesterfield at the weekend though, the light pollution is so much less, not as clear as at Smiths beach (W.A.) last year I lay back on the sand and looked at the stars for hours, and almost perfect moment.

― chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I still had my car I'd be tempted to drive out to the north downs and lie on top of a dark hill watching them. But I don't, so I won't. Far more likely to be drinking with some of YOU.

― Mark C, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I shall look to the heavens. I think it shall probably be cloudy :(

― james, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

YES! I'll be going up to the mountains to my brother's house with my cousin, his girlfriend, and my college friend Jocelyn to celebrate my birthday... it will be perfect to watch the meteors from there. I almost wish I wasn't going so I could spend the weekend in bed with my new little buddy, tho...

― Sean, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

six years pass...

i've seen Perseids (in Brooklyn) and Orionids (in Berkeley) this year. maybe I should shoot (ahem) for the Leonids as well?

what are your favorite viewing locations?

― gabbneb, Saturday, 8 November 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

We happened to be traveling through southern Arizona during the Leonids in 2001, and getting up pre-dawn for a long day of driving was worth it for the light show.

― Rock Hardy, Saturday, 8 November 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

I watched the Leonids in '01 and it happened to fall on my birthday, which was pretty cool. It didn't stop the next year from being among the worst in my life, but hey...

― del (dell), Saturday, 8 November 2008 18:29 (seventeen years ago)

Hey I remember the 2001 Leonids, you could see them from Australia (which never usually happens). It was pretty awesome, though cloudy for most of it.

― Trayce, Sunday, 9 November 2008 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

I really hope it's a clear night! I love meteor showers.

― Maria, Monday, 10 November 2008 01:29 (seventeen years ago)

can these be seen from st. louis, you think?

― cosmic abbigong (Abbott), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to say, fat chance in foggy SF but I'll be in Tahoe, so I'll look for them. When I was a kid in Yosemite, I used to sleep outside to watch them.

Since you were raised by wolves, didn't you always sleep outside?

I'm going to be in Maine, in the dark! Maybe I can see them!

I've watched them the last two years here. Last night was no good though.

― Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 13 August 2009 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

Clear night tonight (for the midlands anyway) so maybe get to see 1 or 2 yet.

― Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 13 August 2009 09:00 (seventeen years ago)

Oh so they may be tonight as well then?

(too cloudy last night, yep)

You lucky sods, we hardly ever get meteor showers down here :( There was one time in 2001 where we could see the Leonids... that aside I dont know if there's any we get to view. I did find a site saing the southern somethingsomethings are visible down here during august but it's been cloudy all week anyway.

Perseids tonight and tomorrow! http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/perseids.cfm

― Elvis Telecom, Monday, 12 August 2013 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

Sat outside and watched for about 20 minutes, saw a few small ones and one really nice big streak, but there's a thunderstorm approaching and the lightning blows out my night-sky acclimation every few minutes.

― cops on horse (WilliamC), Monday, 12 August 2013 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

This should be a great show here in Baja with relatively little light pollution and almost-always-clear skies; of course tonight appears a bit overcast. Will still go out and have a look--saw some nice stuff late last week.

― quincie, Monday, 12 August 2013 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

Had hoped beyond hope I might see something down this end of the earth, but its probably onlu likely for people in like, the northern territory/nth queensland.

Stood outside for 15 mins last night anyway freezing my ass off, but nada. As luck would have it a mate of mine is currently on a tour of Kings Canyon near Uluru, and will get a glorious desert-sky view of it if its at all visible in the south.

Tonight looks really clear, so should hopefully be extra visible.

Completely forgot to look despite walking home after midnight last night. Will take some consolation from your posts and try again tonight.

I've never had much luck with these in the UK - only ever corner-of-eye glimpses, wondering if they were even a thing or not - but remember seeing an amazing display from Portugal one year.

― a passing spacecadet, Friday, 12 August 2016 09:52 (ten years ago)

Draconid meteor shower didn't light up my sky tonight, but Stellar Regions delivered - it always does. But there was a very pretty rapidly rising harvest moon, that looked quite massive at one point.

went w/ a couple friends to watch the perseid meteor shower on saturday night at a dark sky park, it was pretty cool. my friend brought his 10-inch telescope - this thing was huge, about 4 or 5 long - and i saw saturn's rings and a few of its moons. it was spectacular. clouds were coming in quickly so we had only a limited amount of time but we also looked at mars, double cluster, and the ring nebula

― marcos, Monday, 13 August 2018 13:54 (eight years ago)

tried but too much light pollution in town and didn't have energy-motivation to drive out where it was dark

― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 13 August 2018 14:43 (eight years ago)

We drove up to the top of the Grapevine on the old Ridge Route Rd. Decently dark place to go without driving more than 1hr. Good show - one bright one every couple of minutes.

And found...

A piece of burning rocket debris seen streaking across the Pacific Northwest sky last week crashed on a farm in eastern Washington state, authorities said.

After the March 25 event, a farmer discovered a nearly intact piece of rocket in a private field, The Tri-City Herald reported.

The approximately 5-foot (1.5-meter) composite-overwrapped pressure vessel used for storing helium left a nearly 4-inch (10.16-centimeter) dent in the ground, Grant County sheriff's spokesman Kyle Foreman said. No one was hurt, he said.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has said the widely reported bright objects in the sky on March 25 were remnants of the second stage of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket leaving comet-like trails as they burned up upon reentry to the Earth's atmosphere.

The farmer, who authorities said didn't want to be identified, suspected the debris may have come from the rocket and left a message with the sheriff's office over the weekend, Foreman said. Deputies responded Monday and contacted SpaceX officials. SpaceX confirmed it was part of the rocket and has since retrieved it, Foreman said.
