Moving to New Zealand. What I Need to Know

On my way to NZ, starting August next year (job at Victoria University). If asked before, but places I should check out, things I should be aware of, myths, stories and stereotypes I might want to reproduce. Anything. No doubt I'll be posting closer to the departure date.

What are you gonna be doing at Victoria? I don't know what to say! I know there's two ok record stores in Wellington, Slowboat and Real Groovy but I dunno, only been there once and I live in Auckland.

I'll be teaching at Victoria, in the Media Studies department. I've got a while before I make the move, though. I'll take the tips and post also in I R E.

* The Penguin History of New Zealand is not about penguins
* Wellington is a really nice place to live
* Don't make fun of our vowel pronunciation
* The West Coasts of both islands are generally more spectacular in their attractiveness
* You don't have to eat mutton if you don't want to
* New Zealand really comes into its own in Summer
* I would personally like to apologise in advance for everyone that you meet asking you "how do you like it here?" (cultural cringe)

rainy (rainy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

All New Zealander's refer to themselves as "kiwis", in the same way that Bob Dole refers to himself as "Bob Dole". As in, "I don't know about all you other kiwis, but this kiwi is ordering the mutton chops and mashed with two veg" or "The Kiwi Police apprehended two kiwis tonight for the murder of another kiwi. It was said the kiwis had been drinking a the time of the murder."

Are you going to look at local media? If so, three words: Learn. About. Rugby.

Also, there is a considerable amount of material in the following two things:
1. Paul Holmes
2. stories about how New Zealand is perceived by others, especially murkins.

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Vic's a nice school, mostly perched halfway up a hill with a really nice view of the harbour if you're near the right window. Wellington's a Government town - a lot of your students will be kids of bureaucrats. Dunedin is the hard-core student town - people travel down there from all over for the scarfies experience

Te Papa's nice, although I don't know how it compares to other new style national museums.

Depending on where you're from Wellington might seem pretty small. There's actually quite a good cafe scene here.

It is very cheap to pop over to Australia for the weekend.

We drive on the left. Be prepared for wind. Visit the South Island.

plebian plebs (plebian), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, I'm totally moving to new zealand!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there any penguins in New Zealand? Or on Australia? Just trying to think of somewhere I want to live, and penguins would be a big plus. Not the Falkland Islands either.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well, there's the antarctic, but i think only researchers live there, right?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've spent much of the last few years trying to avoid having to go back to New Zealand, so this might sound a little negative, but I think it's fair:

1. it's cheap. also means no one is paid very much (especially in universities, vis a vis other countries), but you don't need so much. it just becomes an issue when travelling, and in buying anything imported (CDs are often US$25!!!). ie twice as much as in the US.

2. The food is generally really good. Plant a garden is you have the chance. Beer and local wines are good and cheap.

3. People dress down. Some would call it slobby...more just very casual.

4. The media is generally terrible. The Herald is an OK newspaper, every other one is shit. TV is bad, but it is in most places. Student radio is OK. Difficult to find intelligent political debate, in media, at least.

5. Buy a bike, or walk lots. Public transportation is not very good.

6. Wellington has a very limited band and club scene. Most people go to bars, and cafes during the day. Beware lots of 20something tedious people talking about coffee, weed, the wind, dub, nature. OK, there are worse topics, but there's also definitely a kind of crusty / hippie / anti-american, anti-corporate mindset that gets old fast.

7. It's often cold in Wellington, even in mid-summer. Go elsewhere. Houses almost never have central heating.

8. Eat fish n chips often and heartily.

9. Oh yeah, rubgy games will often make front page news. As will any New Zealander / NZ film that does well. It's stupid and small-minded.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a really good penguin colony in Dunedin! Several varieties, plus sealions, bearded seals etc. Also, Christchurch is a gateway to the Ice, although you've really got to be a scientist or a member of the US air force to go there.

plebian plebs (plebian), Thursday, 23 September 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Paul is tough but fair. Summers aren't always cold in Wellington - it depends on the summer. I've been here for four summers and had two gooduns and two blahs. Sadly we're due for a blah, but I'm only saying that because New Zealanders like to under-expect and then be pleasantly surprised.

Summers are actually hotter in Canterbury, which is in the South Island.

You could consider living on the Kapiti coast, which is about an hour north of Wellington and has a better climate, but transport might be a hassel because our main highway up that way is a national embarrassment (plus you don't want to be in the situation of trying to find a park at Victoria Uni) and the train, while better, is rickerty.

Oh, our Prime Minister is a woman, so is our head of state (and her representative) and our chief justice and our attourney general. The leader of the opposition is a character from Bleak House who has somehow managed to escape and now aspires to lead us.

plebian plebs (plebian), Thursday, 23 September 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a really good penguin colony in Dunedin! Several varieties, plus sealions, bearded seals etc.

And it is truly wonderful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 23 September 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

dont book the inter - island ferry trip in springtime, or winter. You will only get A/ cancelled or B/ very seasick.

You will never be prepared for the changes in our weather, so don't even try to plan ahead. Get wet / hot / cold / blown away ( all in one day, every week ) and soon you won't even notice.

It isn't That cheap to live here, and the beer and wines are good but getting more expensive lately. However, you can get imported cd's for good prices ( less than US25 ) if you look around.

yeah public transport is shyte unless you are in Christchurch, ( in my experience that is ).I have to agree that tv is terrible, ( esp Paul Holmes ) radio just as bad apart from the Uni stations, and the NZ Herald is probably the only 'news' paper worth reading.

We have great pies.

Generally speaking, locals love talking ( proudly bragging ) about their 'patch', helping and showing newcomers around.

Travelling around takes a lot longer than the maps seem to portray.
We have a bizarre 'left turn' traffic rule, designed to confuse all tourists.

Our "beat police" are not usually armed.

Whatever else you do, make sure to spend a good amount of time exploring the West Coast of the south island, and further south.

donna (donna), Thursday, 23 September 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a penguin colony in oamaru as well as one in dunedin.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 23 September 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i though paul was from melb?

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 23 September 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

he's "well travelled"

the surface noise (slight return) (electricsound), Thursday, 23 September 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Regarding public transport - the buses are okay in wellington - my neighbourhood, Newtown is probably the best connected and has frequent buses up to Vic uni [though the bus company has a monopoly and treats it's workers badly &/or has low standards so you get lots of cranky or downright psycho drivers!].
Newtown's a very ethnically/culturally diverse area w/ lots of migrants. I'd recommend it - some good houses with lower rent prices too.
Wellington has the only decent "free jazz" scene in NZ, which you can read about here: 2003 article in All About Jazz called "New Zealand: a new destination for improvised music?"
If y're into tramping/camping at all I highly recommend the Wellington Tramping and Mountaineering Club as a good way to get familiar with some surrounding areas (they do trips to the South Island too) and meet people.
Hmmm, otherwise...yeah Wellington's full of policy analysts, and wind.
that's all I can think of right now sorry

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Bus drivers are mostly dicks

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

radio just as bad apart from the Uni stations,
hmm beg to differ, the so-called student stations are terrible, but National Radio is good - at least it's morning programme and quite a few specialist programmes. I think Bruce Russell from the dead c still works for them. And their bird calls!

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the uni stations suck. i tried to make radio one better but most of the time the equipment wasn't working and the staff were majorly unhelpful. so i quit. national radio is good!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

bus drivers are mostly paid shit money.

plebian plebs (plebian), Saturday, 25 September 2004 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaz Coleman will live nearby you, so don't be afraid when you hear his cackle.
