Barima in London

I'm flying back tonight after getting a fairly urgent call from my mother yesterday. I don't know entirely what it's about, but I am pretty concerned and speculative. She mentioned that my sibs would need "someone responsible around" and I know they're all back in London this weekend too.

I mention this because if there's a chance I'll be able to see people, I don't want my return to be too out of the blue. I'll be home til mid-October.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hope it's nothing too serious dude

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, hope its nothing too bad. Good luck with it, and if your hands aren't too full then hopefully we'll be able to see you at some point.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks and likewise. I have to meet up with my boss in an hour and then head back into town to do the airport etc.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

wishing well you and yours

teh pow! (blueski), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the moment where I go WHERE THE HELL IS HE?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Safe journey, Barmy. Hope you're able to come out, and that things aren't too dicey.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Good thoughts, sir!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'm leaving the office, though I'm trying to contact home to make sure I am doing the right thing. I'll be back on tonight or tomorrow with the heads up. Thanks for the kind words in the meantime.

Barms, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

hope all is well dude! Safe flight.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Good luck. I hope it's nothing too bad. There is pub and bowling planned for Saturday, if you have free time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey peeps,

Got in safely this morning (haven't slept yet), though I actually got searched at Gatwick (oh no drug dealers come from West Africa oh no), which made me more tetchy and felt pretty insulted (the zip on my case got messed up and I had to hold it together with what was essentially a see-through bodybag). Yesterday was a right nightmare due to a mix-up at work and having to come back more or less broke.

The situation at home...well, I don't want to say right now, which makes me feel lame for dropping more hints and asking you to bear with me, but I have to keep it within my fam for the time being. It's hopefully not gonna be too bad, but I'll be able to say more next week. Dunno about Saturday yet (which would be a shame o' course) and sadly, Alba-FAP will be out tonight.

Thanks again,

Barms

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Nitemare about customs. Hope everything works out for you & yours.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope things get sorted and to meet you soon in a place of fun.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

don't feel obliged to reveal anything either, it's family business after all. see ya soon.

teh pow! (blueski), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Thx. I'll try and ILX as usual, since I have the home broadband and keep this one open for updates. Oh, and can anyone help me with a boring computer question: why is Hotmail asking me for my password when I try to download attachments?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hoooooookay. So, things are still weird and all, but we are all optimistic and there doesn't seem to be too much to worry about. I've certainly gained something of a perspective in the last few days.

But anway, I should be around now for a week and a half and I have some free evenings next week. So, it looks like an Annie-themed one as I will try and do the pub quiz (failing that, I'm up for Trash) and show my face at The Social/Lauren-nite. I can't say anything past that, though I have a party for next week Friday.

Looking forward to reunions and introductions, B.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 30 September 2004 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Try and come to the Swimmer this Sat so I can see you before I leave town, aright? (also to celebrate RickT's birthday, but)

cis (cis), Thursday, 30 September 2004 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Wait wait wait, where are you going?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Barima, plot to return to London in July when I'll be there again. Kaythxbye.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

I can probably do that, no way I could (or should) do another year in Ghana.

Someone must tell me what's happening with The Swimmer.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago)

that's great news. i'm glad your situation isn't as serious as you feared, and i'm looking forward to seeing you next week.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Good heavens, Lauren reminds me how rude I was not to say something about that! Yes, very good to hear things are better than expected.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Thank you lovely people both, though I must point out that I'm going for the old positive mental attitude and a lot of prayer.

I just had a vision of myself as a born-again Christian, which seems to be a small improvement on the horribly lapsed one I've been for over a year.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:48 (twenty years ago)

My friend, we all find our peace as we do. Just don't say we're all going to hell, it's sorta depressing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 October 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

You're all going to....oh ok! ;-) Good to hear you are being positive Barima, it's the only way to be, as hard as it sometimes seems. Wish I could come to london to say hi! Good thoughts heading your way.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 1 October 2004 07:12 (twenty years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 October 2004 07:14 (twenty years ago)

I haven't seen a thread for this week's Annie themed opener, so here seems good.

I have an appoinment in the afternoon for a few hours, what's up with the pub quiz? And having heard bad things about Trash, I'm wavering (plus, I really want to go out drinking and say stupid things to people).

Tomorrow night, Lauren in London (featuring Annie), is a far greater prospect.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Excellent - I was going to start a thread asking what the deal was with this week, but these seems like as good a place as any.

This week is looking very packed indeed and I think I can only do one before Friday - Tuesday is looking the most appealing. What time is Annie on? I know the Social isn't exactly huge so it might be a good idea to get there earlyish. Or we could meet at the Yorkshire Grey first before moving round. Any ideas?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, have to Google the Social. A pre-meet is always a good one.

I went to the UK B-Boy championships last night, so my dance moves will probably have a bit of breaker edge to them. Also, I met one of ILM's biggest rap heroes 3 minutes after arriving!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

i'm heading down to Teh Griffin for around 6.30 (but nearer 7 probably), Trash after if not Princess Louise inbetween - you've got my number B

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Gotcha.

Just checked ents24.com and thesocial.co.uk and it's: TOURETTES 1st Birthday Special with FREEFORM FIVE & ANNIE. The other lineups for the month make it look like a place I'd happily live in. They open midday to midnight, so we should probably just go there after work.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm probably going tonight as well, although not to the quiz. i'll head out around 9 or so and try to find stevem and whoever is out and about.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:57 (twenty years ago)

this is another in the hefty 'i can't believe i have never been there' folder for young stevem

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:04 (twenty years ago)

The other thing about the Social is it does all sorts of proper pre-drinking snack food like fish finger sandwiches and spaghetti hoops on toast and stuff. Upstairs at least is like drinking in a scout hut.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

i've managed to never find the social, either. weird.

maybe stevem and i are the same person.

colette (a2lette), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

About that...

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:10 (twenty years ago)

hey i never said i couldn't find it, just that i'd never been there. but don't make me talk about this any more, i'm welling up...

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago)

I'll be out this evening, not to sure how early - depends on flatmate etc. I'm pretty sure I'll be out tomorrow too. The one time I went to the social before it got packed very early, it might have been a Friday night though...

toby (tsg20), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:29 (twenty years ago)

How early was early?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Before seven? This was like two years ago though, so my memory's very hazy and I should probably be ignored - I'm sure there are people there who've been more times (Lauren?). As Matt remarks, it's not very big, and there aren't many seats.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I'm quite happy to go before 7.

As for the Griffin, I have no idea if I can handle a third consecutive trip to Shoreditch tonight.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

it's Clerkenwell and there's a quite a difference! well not really

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Annie e-mailed me to say it's in Shoreditch. So there!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:41 (twenty years ago)

It is Shoreditch. Annie and Barima correct, Stevem wrong.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

none of you can come now

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

We must come together, Annie said so.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

And if Annie told you to jump off a cliff?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

haha, we are thinking of totally different Griffins - i thought all this was a bit odd

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

I'd probably do it, having nothing better to do that day.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

about going out or about the name?

Freelance Nightmover (blueski), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

going out.

still on my way to that nap.

if there's any kind of coordinated drinking beforehand, i guess people should probably text me, since most people don't post from home?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I wish I was going to NIGHT MOVES.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

you should come down. i'm sure it's totally worth it.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 7 October 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm exhausted! I've been trying to clean the flat solo (which is pathetically taking days instead of a morning, though I have to borrow a hoover) and my brother and dad reappeared from Ghana unexpectedly. Lauren, I'll have to miss out on your lovely accent tonight.

Tim, are you hitting on me? I shaved this morning, so my allure may be halved now. You can have the Benny Benassi mp3 without feeling for my gold.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 7 October 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

"Tim, are you hitting on me?"

It depends, can you do that one-eye squint thing all the time?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

This is maybe the most interesting thread about a series of social events that I never attended that I have EVER read.

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago)

so, did anyone go? i was lame and went to bed instead.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 8 October 2004 05:09 (twenty years ago)

I read that as 'wet the bed'.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 8 October 2004 07:32 (twenty years ago)

i ended up going to the pub with boyler and barang, which was nice, especially as, somewhat randomly, two other (non-interweb) friends of mine happened to come into the same pub.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 8 October 2004 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I was equally lame and went to bed. I've worked up a cracking thirst for tonight though.

Steve did you leave the pub at a sensible time or did predictable ruin set in?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 October 2004 07:52 (twenty years ago)

well you see because my other friends turned up, it seemed rude not to stay a bit longer, but i was still home (via chicken shop) just as newsnight finished...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 8 October 2004 07:56 (twenty years ago)

I wish I was going to NIGHT MOVES.

me too N. (obviously Dublin will be better)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago)

i ended up having a relaxing evening (no police, no crazies) at the cheese with my friends, and flaking out on them even before closing time in order to go home and watch the west wing.

they apparently went on to late-night ruin at the troy club. they actually called and said 'we're going to the troy? want to come out?!' and i explained that many exciting events could tempt me out for late night adventures, but making a journey especially for the troy seemed sick and wrong. oh well. i feel alive, alert, awake, enthusiastic today. (enough so that i'm singing summer camp songs in my head, obv. help!)

colette (a2lette), Friday, 8 October 2004 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Dublin franchise of NIGHT MOVES now!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:25 (twenty years ago)

believe me the way our club is going it can't come too soon. yesterday I gave out flyers and put posters up all day, went in and DJed the warm up for an hour, and then was so horrified by the other guys music and the clientele we're now attracting that I left and went to the rival techno night, with all my friends.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I say rival "techno" night only to describe them by the way, we're becoming drunken student/office twat night.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:00 (twenty years ago)

put a sign on the door saying NO YOU

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

if only it was that simple.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

maybe you need a seedier venue? does Dublin have a Red Light District?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Dublin has about two venues. we just need some new promoters.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:05 (twenty years ago)

I finished cleaning the flat, took care of the groceries, told off my cousin for being useless and went for a cup of tea round the neighbours that turned into a 3 hour psychoanalysis. With cheesecake and chocolate slices. I'm now relearning the ways of the bowtie.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm leaving on Monday :-(.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Here's the situation - my job were very understanding, but more and more, I'm finding my homelife totally unpleasant and restrictive. In spite of the fact that mum's health was and still is at an all-time low, she is still controlling and misunderstanding to me and my personal life (and somewaht manipulative too). My first brother is still a total asshole and a sponge. But anyway, now that Mum has others around her (Dad, for the time being, her brother, and even the total asshole), my time here is drawing to a close until January.

BUT - I kind of decided that I want to look for jobs to come back to and now I'm currently in a net cafe trying to create 3 dynamite proposals for television series for an application. I have 2 more or less sorted and I'm wondering if ILX can help with the third - or become it. So, what do ya say?

(NB, I was disallowed sitcoms, sketches, dramas, chat-shows and straight documentaries, but I am mostly overcoming this).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

And, though I'd personally appreciate it, Ned, I don't think they'd be amenable to a snuff movie proposal, even if it was a reality series starring cast-members of The OC.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago)

J

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Just in case you were considering that.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

shit dude i dunno if i'll be coming out to play before Monday but drop us a line if you want to hook up. and if you get the TV job i will like you even more! ;)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Are you anywhere near Charing Cross Rd right now?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Cue thoughts of online message board dating.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

no, stuck in Old St for the next few hours and feelin' too crappy to make it out tonight at the mo

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Barima - Mortimer Arms on Tottenham Court Road tonight. There be much drinking and mentalism. Come along.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

ie there will be people there VERY SHORTLY INDEED and you are a short walk away.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

(Also Steve text him my number please)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, OK, but first I need to concentrate to do this proposal (which so far sucks). A page per show!

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Come to the internet place opposite the Sainsbury's Local/Cafe Nero/Office and berate/inspire me.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago)

I won't be there for about another hour and a half but know where you mean. I might drop in.

But people you know will be in the pub, anyway.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Ah, could they be looking for A Place on the Property Ladder In The Sun or something?

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Anytrhing, as longs as it's entertaining (in a sort of populist way and of course, remembering the provisos above). Wanna join me on Messenger?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Don't have it! Argh!

If it's for RDF or Endemol, go factual but topical (more sex and tood for the latter). Include an element of schadenfreude.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

It's one of them! Thanks.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

The schandefreude figures heavily in at least one of my proposals. Maybe another, but it didn't seem realistic enough.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Ah good. A friend of mine who worked for Planet 24 said his first month or so there was sifting through unsolicited/rejected CVs and the like, swiping ideas, as directed to by a Mr. G3ldof.

You should just have a show called Schadenfreude and be done with it.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:50 (twenty years ago)

Failing that, you really can't lose if you suggest things which could be new pilots for their particular presenters/talents. If they;'re not demanding originals. Ah, fuck it, even if they are you have to show you can do their thinking for them and suggest people to attach that they've already got on contract as is cheaper.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I have a cousin on the inside in case they like me (protects my ideas from theft I mean).

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 16:03 (twenty years ago)

One of my best friends just got done being M33r4 Sy4l's researcher on Who Do You Think You Are - and got to go to India (her family are also Punjabi) although before and just when it started she didn't sound like she was going to like doing it at all.

The more useful things you can do for them, the better. Clearing music for broadcast? Already knowing what Tx means? Have any hotlines to celebrities or interesting subjects? All good.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I think I'm covered now, if I do an hour each on the next 2, I could still make it to the pub.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Am also going to pub. Hope to see you there.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I am only halfway through the second and about to get kicked out. I'm going to the pub. I am a loo-hoo-se-her.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Last night was good fun - thanks everybody. I still haven't found my ticket, but it will show up before Monday, sadly.

I got the form in today, though! Staying up at Ken C's last night to finish it while being fed a Coke/Red Bull/chocolate drip might have been more fun and weird, but it's done now.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 15 October 2004 16:53 (twenty years ago)
