What can I do at Christmas?

Aargh! It's our second Christmas together as a couple. His snooty sister has invited us to hers - again - but we want to spend this one alone.

We're both working Christmas Eve, but with the big day itself falling on a saturday we'll get two days off. Don't want to stay at home, but don't want to spend too much money either.

Bearing in mind we're in Scotland.... Any suggestions?

So are you thinking about going away in the UK, or further a field?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Norway? Some arctic wonderland for a long weekend?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

my mom has basically invited everyone home to michigan for christmas. so you guys could do that...

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even want to think about my Christmas. Matt is working.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no archel!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

that sucks. I worked chrismas eve night, christmas night and boxing day night last year.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Rumpy, if I were you I'd just hole up, take the phone off the hook and enjoy uninterrupted couple time surrounded by good food, good booze and good presents.

Since we have no transport it is looking difficult for Matt even to get to my mum's (which is where I'll probably end up) between shifts :(

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

whereabouts is your mum archel?
Also, your first suggestion for rumpy sounds like bliss!!!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette, what should I get your mum as a gift? I've never been to Michigan!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

She is about 20 miles away, Pink. Why can't there be buses on Christmas Day? (oh yeah right cos then there'd be even MORE miserable people having to work at Xmas.)

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Archel - would certainly suit our pockets, we're just desperate to get away on the cheap. We hate the flat we're in just now, too small, makes us want to wring each others necks. Most weekends we go away camping but it would be far too cold to do that in December!

Would certainly consider going abroad but with work commitments it would mean leaving on Christmas Eve and coming home Boxing Day - flights will be rare and most probably expensive. Sigh.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have a car rumpy?

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette, what should I get your mum as a gift? I've never been to Michigan!

vodka, chocolate, wine...whatever, really.

weren't we going to have some mega fap in my parent's barn?

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Pink. Loaded with tents etc and ready to roll at all times.

You're not going to suggest sleeping in it at a picturesque beauty spot are you? Cause it's too small to spread out in... haw haw

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, no i just wondered if you'd be able to travel within the UK.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

A wee cottage/B&B in the Lake District?

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Very expensive at this time of year, and most of the wee cottages we've looked into are for 3 nights - 5 nights minimum.

We looked at some hotels, but most of the Christmas Packages are dinner/dances and bring to mind old gin soaked spinsters with feather boas and cigarette holders.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Go onto http://www.smoothound.co.uk or http://www.wotif.com the latter is all last minute hotel bookings, although obviously you can't really use that quite yet! The former is just a collection of hotels ranging from really cheap to really expensive.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Or even just a hotel in glasgow or nearby, so there's not too much travel costs. You can tell everyone you're being whisked away to a secret location, so you wouldn't need to tell anyone where you were, and you could spend some time being tourists close to home which is always nice!

x-post, one hotel in Glasgow came up as £259 for 24th-28th Dec, through lastminute.com, just a standard room, no package.

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Pink, that's great. Get the ambience right and he might even get carried away and propose ;-)

x-post, thanks Vicky - is that for one night?

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How 'bout a cozy cottage in Scotland?
http://www.mackinnonhotel.co.uk/default.asp
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ardhasaig/

I don't know if the Christmas rates are too high, but the normal rates are reasonable...

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

no, for all four, it was quoting about £58 a night. Of course, it might be a mistake and they will charge more for Xmas, but it's worth looking to find out. Just do a general hotel search for the area you're interested in, with the dates you're looking for on lastminute.com

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Are any of your mates going away for xmas? What about offering to look after their place/pet over the festive period or just asking would it be OK to stay for a couple of days while they're away?

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Good idea, I'll need to ask around. We're getting his parents place for a fortnight this friday while they go on holiday. Squatters Rights!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Pink, that's great. Get the ambience right and he might even get carried away and propose ;-)
OOh let's hope so! :-)
