I bet Ronan is on The Guinness.

DJ Martian, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm suspecting he's currently bathing in it, and will post incoherent messages at about 3 am his time wondering why we're not all posting for his benefit.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's a shame that Angola didn't make it, that would have been fun I'm sure.

chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Uruguay had 4 players sent off in the South American qualifying match last week...

Mark C, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That was Chile I believe Mark, the surprise last place finishers in the South American qualifiers, now Zamorano has quit they're nothing.

chris, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who is involved with the World Cup DIning Society will know that this is a great blow for us. The Iranian restaurants are so much better that the Irish.

(See more on this topic soon).

Pete, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HOOOOOOOOOOORAY.

I'm not too drunk. I drove into college so I only could have one pint. Still I'm drunk on the ecstacy of victory, er not the same really. Good win, very nervy game particularly when the goal went in, I was thinking is it going to be the Macedonia game all over again. Still I'm drinking right now, and I'm off to the Kitchen later. So woohoo.

Ronan, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"it's a shame that Angola didn't make it, that would have been fun I'm sure."

I can't wait to see what Stubbsy and Lawro have got to say about this on Saturday. It seems as if, with the ref unwilling to dole out a fifth red card, Vicente just chucked himself at the ground knowing all the subs (a whole bunch of them, all at once, early in the second half) had been used. Very strange - what's to be gained from forcing an abandonment of a friendly that you're losing 5-1?

Michael Jones, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"You're shi'ite, and you know you are" x1000

Benjamin, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Congratulations Ronan. I heard Shay played a blinder.

stevo, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How the fuck did we losoe to Costa Rica? I must have missed that one. Anyone who can put the ball in the net wanna move to Canada? We have all the keepers we need but no offense.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Radzinski is Canadian but your manager rankled him one time too many.

You only scored one goal in six world cup qualifying matches. Four losses and one bore draw and one miraculous win. But there's always cricket. And the Scott Tournament of Hearts.

Benjamin, Thursday, 15 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm especially happy for Mick McCarthy because he had a really tough time of it.
I'm glad the Irish have made it. I've only been to Ireland once but when I was there I had the BEST time ever. :-)

Will, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who is involved with the World Cup DIning Society will know that this is a great blow for us. The Iranian restaurants are so much better that the Irish. (See more on this topic soon).

Pete this sounds horribly like my plan for drinking my way round the nations of Euro 2000, Yugoslavia was particularly tricky. But Croatian wine wasn't half bad.

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Must admit to having questioned Micks ability in the past alot. I guess I've been put in my place. Same is true for Shay Given who while fumbling alot for club teams seems to play superbly for Ireland, I'm not sure if he got Man of the Match yesterday aswell, but he deserved it. Team doesn't gel without Roy Keane really. Still we're there, and the Student Bar yesterday had the best atmosphere. Unbelievable. It's going to be a great summer.

Ronan, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Previous WC Dining Club managed: crappy tapas bar in Victoria (Spain), wuvly Persian restaurant on Edgware Road (Iran), Belgo's (3 guesses.......) and I think that was it. All members have been to Pizza Express together since the idea was hatched so I suppose we did Italy too. The whole thing was not a great success. I blame myself for not locating a Danish restaurant. I offered to buy everyone a Danish pastry and bacon sarnies but they turned me down.

Emma, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Obviously with Ireland there you're just going to have to get pissed on Guinness or something unless you're a particularly big fan of stew or other em Irish cuisine. You could go wild and eat some potatoes I suppose.

Ronan, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's a Danish restaurant at the far end of Fulham road somewhere, I passed it on a bus a few weeks ago, it's owned by Mikkel Beck, ex of the smog-monsters (that's Middlesborough for those who don't speak footie)

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't the Iranian coach say he was going to hang himself from the goalposts?

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah he said that. I mean seriously, what an arse. Theres mind games and then theres just barefaced stupidity. Iran are shite and they were never going to beat us. Of course I was always that confident, sssssh.

Ronan, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm not going all the way to Fulham to eat pastries and bacon! We were sort of hoping that India and Thailand (and other curry- producing nations) would do well so we could just eat curry. See how civilised me and my chums are.

Emma, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Danish cuisine is not just pastries and bacon! there's erm.... herring and ... open sandwiches. lots of dill I believe.

Is there a Senegalese restaurant in London? there's one I want to try.

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wasn't the Iranian coach Bora Milutinovic btw? One of the most successful world cup coaches he is. Guided many smaller teams to the finals, USA included, in 1990 iirc.

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Danish cuisine sounds like a rip off of Swedish cuisine to me.

Emma, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Emma, I think you may be right but Smorgasboard (sp?) is definitely Danish. hey it's all Scandinavia innit?

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I can't wait to see what Stubbsy and Lawro have got to say about this on Saturday."

Surely a given - *every* Saturday?

the pinefox, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

not when it's frickin' Alistair MacGowan impersonating Lawro it's not grrrrrr

chris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wish I could nominate Stubbsy and Lawro for best double act. Every Saturday, cheery, chubby, churubic Stubbsy tries to be nice to Lawro and withering, weathered, weary, Lawro musters barely enough contempt to respond, and looks at Stubbsy like he is low-grade shit on his shoe. Classic comedy.

Will, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No the Iranian coach was called Blazovic. I can't remember his first name but he was the Croatian manager beforehand.

Ronan, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Smörgåsbord! Accents optional for English speakers. And I would have said the word was definitely Swedish, not that the Danish don't eat them (Swedish and Danish food are very similar, I think). Isn't smørrebrød the Danish word and smörgås the Swedish word for the same type of sandwich? Fairly certain smør is Danish for butter and smör Swedish, even if I'm not quite up to speed on my open sandwich terminology. You can see that the latter is Swedish and the former must be Danish or Norwegian because the others use ø but Swedish doesn't, it uses ö instead.

Mmm, Danish frikadeller meatballs and æbleskivers (pancakey waffley things). Yum. Well, I'm glad of excuses to eat Danish food even if nobody else is. Curses, I missed that program about telling whether you might be of viking descent. I have the hair colour, and I was quite looking forward to adopting that viking name webpage's advice and calling myself Bekkhild the Red from now on.

P.S. Solvang rocks. And that thread says they eat lots of ostrich burgers there. Is this a typical Danish thing, or just a Solvang thing?

Rebecca, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still asking myself the same question as Mr Noodles. Yes, well done Ireland.

Keane has very definite ideas about the qualities required. The Ireland captain said: "I want someone who is an honest manager who doesn't mess around, understands how important it is to be involved at international level, someone who is very proud to be a manager and be proud of what we are trying to achieve in Ireland. Someone who is honest and someone who has balls and doesn't take any shit from anyon

zing at trap and disqualifies roy keane in one go

unblog your plug (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 01:22 (twelve years ago)

the first thing anyone answering that description would do is retire robbie keane, it's just empty blather from a thick cunt with ideas above his station and delusions of longevity

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 01:24 (twelve years ago)

It's astonishing that a guy who has such an amazing record is so hated, don't know anyone who rates him. I guess his record is due to the lack of any significant rival for the last 12 years or so. Despite his sixty goals I still think of him as a guy who fluffs chances in important games.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 06:18 (twelve years ago)

that's a tad harsh, not that he doesn't and hasn't infuriated me over the years in both shirts.

he's lazy, doens't try hard enough for his team mates, is overly critical of others on the pitch, doesn't contribute anything but goals.

but he does contribute a lot of goals. and he knows that we know we need him for as long as he'll play.

the management of trying alternatives has been woeful. i'm not sure how admirable it has been for him to play every greedy minute possible in every two-bob friendly over the years- i'm not claiming that there's been a ream of probbie keanes missed out on due to lack of oxygen, but there's been plenty of players not given a fair crack at points where it would have been beneficial to us as a squad and for competition purposes.

the move to LA has suited him and us pretty well imo- if he'd agree to a reduced role it would be great, but how likely that is now that it's ten hours or w/e away idk.

in important games, he delivers to a pretty high degree tho imo. and sixty goals. for ireland. under staunton and trap. carrys a lot of weight.

unblog your plug (darraghmac), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 09:54 (twelve years ago)

always thought of simon cox as underrated, now warming forest bench. always seemed to be warming benches despite manifestly higher skill level than first-choice for club/country

HAVE YOU SEEN ME? Please don't hesitate (imago), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 10:27 (twelve years ago)

In his short spell at Celtic I was amazed at Keane's pace (over short distances) and movement - it really opened my eyes to how good he could be at his best. It also opened my eyes to just how shite everyone else in Scotland was.

Of course he was probably past his best then and he's had another three plus years on the clock since.

Are you a horse? (onimo), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)

i feel v neg about cox but possibly due to trapp trolling us with him for a few years.

It's amazing, but the qualifying is so gerrymandered we still have a huge amount to do.

LocalGarda, Sunday, 16 November 2025 19:35 (five months ago)

would want to avoid Italy, Turkey and maybe Poland but everyone else looks a bit more beatable

nashwan, Sunday, 16 November 2025 19:42 (five months ago)

yeah i mean the chances of us actually qualifying are slim, but christ it's been a while since the Irish team did anything worth celebrating

Number None, Sunday, 16 November 2025 19:46 (five months ago)

I know spreading the joy makes some sense but like South Korea, Uzbekistan and Jordan etc breezing through while we beat two highly seeded teams over four games and our reward is they seed it so we play two more kinda sticks in the craw.

Nordies have also qualified on that basis

Number None, Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:13 (five months ago)

By winning promotion in the Nations League under Tomasson last season, Sweden have reached the World Cup play-offs as one of the four best performing teams in the Nations League not assured of a play-off spot.

unfuckingbelievable

Untitled Goose Band (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:13 (five months ago)

that's a stunning pair of results to rack up in four days

Sgt. Biscuits, Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:14 (five months ago)

they've still got to win a two-legged match with Graham Potter as their manager tho right xp

Sgt. Biscuits, Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:15 (five months ago)

Weirdly it's a one-off semi final, then a one-off final.

Presumably they'll make the one-off semi final bit a home fixture for the teams they want to qualify.

LocalGarda, Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:22 (five months ago)

yes, home team technically based on this month's FIFA ranking I think

nashwan, Sunday, 16 November 2025 20:23 (five months ago)

hat stays on (gyac), Thursday, 26 March 2026 23:37 (one month ago)

obv the last two pens had no bottle but the deflating effect of your keeper absolutely selling himself to the same bloke twice in the same game can't be ignored, he's a fabulous keeper and very good against penalties but it's like schick found a glitch, that deceleration he did in his final stride worked both times

imago, Friday, 27 March 2026 09:45 (one month ago)

imago, Friday, 27 March 2026 09:46 (one month ago)
