SpongeBob SquarePants set to splash across your TV screen again
NEW YORK (AP) — Looks like SpongeBob is getting squeezed for more screen time.
SpongeBob SquarePants, the popular animated Nickelodeon show, is returning with 20 all-new episodes, set to premiere on the cable channel some time in 2005 after the big square sponge and his undersea friends soak on the big screen.
“What could be better than announcing that the world’s most beloved and optimistic sea sponge is coming back with 20 new episodes?” asked Nickelodeon president Cyma Zarghami Wednesday. “SpongeBob is the most successful property in our 25-year history, and we’re thrilled to bring his fans more adventures from Bikini Bottom. And maybe he’ll finally get his driver’s licence.”
The series, which follows the absorbent adventures of a talking sponge and his best friend, Patrick, in the underwater lair of Bikini Bottom, was launched in July 1999. It has become a sensation with children and adults alike.
Many fans believed there would be no more SpongeBob on television after the upcoming film.
Not true, according to show creator and executive producer Stephen Hillenburg.
“While I’m completing the day-to-day production of the SpongeBob feature film, I am also looking forward to overseeing the creation of these new SpongeBob episodes for television,” said Hillenburg.
The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie hits theatres Nov. 19.

That scream you just heard in the middle distance came from the souls of Dan and Nicole wailing in torment.

our 25-year history

Has Nickelodeon been around that long? Cripes.

So he fucking should, the new Ren and Stimpy sucks like a black hole

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 24 September 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The best thing about John K. was his retro cartooning style when he wasn't being lazy. R & S was more of a novelty thing, I think. Spongebob has the same dynamic: Spongebob = Stimpy and Ren = Squidword. Minus all the gross-out "shock" humor. Those first 9 episodes of R & S were good at the time, but I was either overexposed to them or they just haven't aged well because that's one slow-moving cartoon.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's about spongebob being sent to catholic school, with the oysters as the nuns.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Who would watch that?

Aja (aja), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

my nephew, for one.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 25 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...

I love this show, sort of. It's about the only children's show I can stand, and to my complete surprise, my 7-year old daughter loves it. Also, it helped keep us occupied through the boring TS Kay scare today.

In some ways, it seems like a friendlier version of Ren & Stimpy. Is it the same writers or producers?

I saw in my head Squidward with his clarinet lodged in his throat and then SpongeBob does the Heimlich maneuver and the clarinet comes flying out of his mouth

There are almost too many random weird Spongebob threads. Might as well revive this one because, sad news:

💛 We are sad to share the news of the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. Today, we are observing a moment of silence to honor his life and work. 💛

this was the first show i ever thought i was too old for, but for some reason (teenage... boredom?) i would still watch it whenever it was on and it kinda gradually revealed itself as awesome
