McL seems so awfully tame now in comparison to early years. There are at least 30 shows on FOX that out-obnoxious McL's best day every day.

John McLaughlin: Wrong! You know quite well, you're just shy. Mondo-jackalo-gee-mon-mania-jack..
Jack Germonde: Well, it might be..
John McLaughlin: I'm not finished with your name, Germonacle-jack-o-lantern-gee-gi-jummy-jummy-jammy-mayhem!
Jack Germonde: You're insane, John!
John McLaughlin: Wrong! I'm perfectly sane. Everyone else, however, is insane and trying to steal my magic bag. St. Patrick of Buchananomics!

Chuck Klosterman thought The McLaughlin Group was "brilliant."

That looks like a clip from his last show, but the still alone bades me not to watch.

Imagine going to confession when McL was a priest.... The penance would be anyone's guess.

RIP -- love the show, and always thought he handled that forum with the exact right amount of absurdity

"Fred Beetle Barnes!"

I always thought that's what it was too, but, right from the horse's mouth, it's Fred "the Beadle" Barnes. What in the hell is a Beadle? Was their ever a fifth Beadle?

I enjoy watching this while stoned but that's about it
― brimstead, Wednesday, 17 August 2016 23:30 (nine years ago)
this program relied entirely on showmanship. the amount of information it contained was negligible. my problem with it was that the showmanship wasn't very compelling or entertaining, like watching a play where the actors think that it is more dramatic to froth at the mouth and yell every line at one another.
exact right amount of absurdity
except the absurdity did not emerge naturally from the topic under consideration, by reframing political theater as a theater of the absurd, but was slathered on top of it by pure clowning around

I always found Jack Germond wavering between trying to talk rationally and obvious disdain for what he was doing entertaining.
