ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the wit

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the board seemed wary of me but certain people were very nice to me. or they were fucking funny. or they were fucking smart. or both, and more...

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

A whole load of people who were really intelligent, interesting, knowledgeable and funny, most of whom argued in strong but civilised ways. Then I met some, and they were mostly every bit as great in person. The first person who really stood out to me and seemed to have everything I loved most about this place, in the biggest quantities imaginable, was Mark S, and he still seems to represent every one of its virtues as well as can be imagined.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The two week hiatus made me appreciate it at a time when there was a lot shitty about ILE.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What Martin said really.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

9/11

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

figuring i didn't have enough irl friends to hang out with lol

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

figuring most people were wary of another email 'contact'

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i thought i was being sarcastic there, but on reflection it might be true

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

fantasies of fucking ILXors

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

there were people here who liked arthur russell.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

figuring i didn't have enough irl friends to hang out with lol

I read that as 'girlfriends'...

My answer: crushing boredom at work, short attention span.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

should i start a "why i left ilx" thread?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, also true Archel

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Archel's spot-on for me too :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The biting wit and sarcasm... Ahhh, those were the days.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

are you being sarcastic?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the sarcasm was good, yes

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I get bored. I know longer have a full-time job to go to every day. It's addictive. I get bored. I have no friends on this island I live on. Well, I have a couple of Maria's friends. I can go on ILM and talk about death metal and other stuff that nobody that I know in real life cares about. Um, it's addictive.
I try and figure out if ILX is bad for my music writing and I can't really tell. I right about the same amount probably. But all that stuff that used to stay stuck in my brain gets blabbed out in posts on ILM now, and before it probably went straight from my pen to paper. I never really talked about music in such depth before or tried to make sense of so much stuff before, this is probably good. But I wonder if it makes me more boring somehow too. I like the instant feedback though. But I never wrote for any audience before and I don't like the feeling that I'm writing something with an ILM audience in mind. Even if it's just sub-concious. But it is really fun to talk about music sometimes!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah i might be a bit stoned but scott steward is just about my favourite poster.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

shall i keep a running commentary?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX should change the format to add a column to the right to add color commentary to the threads. It would be like the DVD special editon of ILX.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i only lurked on and off for the first year or two i was aware of ilx (ilm really), but as time wore on i became slightly enamored with all the crazily intelligent obsessives on here and was fascinated by all the earnest discussion. the novelty sort of wore off after a while, and eventually i began to despise rockcrits. and music. i don't even listen to music anymore, i hate that shit. (this happened to me with a prominent comics forum a while back btw - it was full of professionals and all the bitching, navel-gazing and myopia literally drove me to disavow comics, and i haven't read one since)

i think i started posting regularly bcz it seems like the standards here are now low enough that I don't have to worry about whether or not i'm contributing anything decent.

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

btdubs, scott steward is totally awesome

\(^o^)/ (Adrian Langston), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I've stayed here because I like a lot of the people who post here, and want to read their thoughts about a variety of things.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, the people!! hahaha, sorry. i obviously would not have hung around on ilx as long as i have if the people posting were dudz or your typical amerikaonlinevampiretrolls. there really are loads and loads of interesting and smart and funny folx on ilx and i dig 95% of them. i actually do laugh out loud sometimes! and they are mostly nice to me too! (see above)

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

amerikaonlinevampiretrolls

My people! Oh wait...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure about 'staying'. ilm has been the first and pretty much only discussion board I've ever been on. I've never looked for others.

But having seen a couple of other boards (linked from here, usually) i love the design of the place. The archives and the search function are fab.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean people visit other discussion boards? Weirdos.

Dadrockismus (Dada), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah what's it all about?!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

*imagines a future where people will say they were born on ILX*

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't that happen with Alex in NYC's kid already?

bnw (bnw), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yup

ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah but the kid aint posted yet.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

100 pictures is worth 100,000 words

ken c (ken c), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

only if they illustrate the point!

(*ouch* i don't really believe that!)

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

habit. ilx and i are like an old married couple. i fix it a sandwich, it grunts in acknowledgment and goes back to its racing form.

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I came to ILX cuz I was curious about what Scott found so interesting there that could capture his interest for so long every day. Then I got hooked myself. Now Scott and I are like ILX neighbors who pass in hallways -- we hardly ever post on the same threads. He usually lives on ILM while I drop by ILE now and then. I'm a newbie, relatively, so we'll see how long I stay. It's kind of hard to stay away.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

do you check up on him?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I try and figure out if ILX is bad for my music writing and I can't really tell. I right about the same amount probably.

I think we have clear evidence here that it is bad for your righting. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The pies.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

2. empathy
3. discussion
4. pie

Ain't That Peculiar (kenan), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Cripps Pink (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the only place where I can be the racist, homophobic, xenophobe that I really am.

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

because (most) everyone is so funny, intelligent and hott

(also i like that it's not all american)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a reason to leave?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

'Cause it's smart and funny and mostly kind. I love tracing the time zones as different people and different threads predominate.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

do you check up on him?

no, but sometimes I get the feeling he's checking up on me. (I work for myself while he watches the baby. The more I'm on ILX, the longer it takes me to finish my work and the longer he has to watch Rufus.)

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Maria!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Rufus!!

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

rufusrok!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not here as often as i used to be, but there's still enough to keep me interested when I drop by.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

...erm, wot may yet make me linger even longer here, about,'s first and foremost this wondrous virtual unstink of perfectly washed feet, hair, teeth and armpits - being a poor dirty white ex-soviet boy (and, moreover, having no teeth or hair, or armpits, of my own worth speaking of) this hygiene thing really impresses the undead daylights outta me.
oh yeah.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

at the moment ; ILX SLASH FICTION

kephm (kephm), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I stayed because of Matt DC

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

In no particular order, other than the order I thought of them in:

1. Funny threads
2. Nice people
3. Rabid arguement threads that I never read, or just post to for the hell of it
4. Random silliness
5. Conquering the stats cock
6. Opportunity to improve social life, not always taken
7. Trig Brother!
8. Meeting cool people from other countries

That sorta thing...

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

t\'\'t the soviets took your armpits? i am so sorry.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

at the moment ; ILX SLASH FICTION

Too. Fucking. Right.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just upset because no one slashed me. Sigh. I guess the chiX0rs of ILX just lez up too much all the time to warrant any hott slash accent.

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i got that i have wide eyes and no further slash! it was a tease.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm just upset because no one slashed me.

haha. ...or ...anyway, my ilx-name gets *regularly* "slashed" without me even liking it that much, really)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

A whole load of people who were really intelligent, interesting, knowledgeable and funny

Where did they go?

Gene, Friday, 24 September 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

jeez how many "renegade" lurkers are there?

oops (Oops), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I squeezed it so hard it gave me some new friends.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What made you stay with ILX?

The pension plan.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The aroma.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, she suckered me into believing the baby was mine.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

You weren't the only one, Michael. Actually.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Mandee has just both flattered and confused me, in almost equal terms.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You too?!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a glutton for punishment.

And pie.

I love 70% of you, like 24% and totally wanna crap on the grave of a couple of you.

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

*makes mental note to not die anytime soon*

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, it's threads like this that assure you'd never be on my list!

ex-jeremy (x Jeremy), Friday, 24 September 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't really thought about why I've stayed...I just have. It's a great place to learn about stuff, and I've gotten to know some really great, informed, funny, fantastic people in the process. Moreover, there aren't as many people in my everyday life that I can have as detailed debates about music with (lots of my closest friends couldn't give two shits about music at all).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX is the new CB radio.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's less effective for the tacky pick-up, IMHO.

{Sand in the [vaseline} on the lens] (x Jeremy), Saturday, 25 September 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

What made you stay with ILX?

The depth of knowledge exhibited by those individuals who post here on a regular or semi-regular basis. The vast amount of information that now exists in my brain (or BRANE if you must) that was never present before. I feel like my whole personal universe has been expanded vastly since starting my posting here.

I used to wish that I was as cool, as witty, as knowledgable as those individuals here. Sometimes I still feel that way, admittedly. However, these days I mostly feel that I couldn't give a fuck if you consider me too earnest, too serious, too straightforward, or too straitlaced for this forum. This place is a valuable resource for me, from the highly informative threads that I lurk on to the chatty, "hey, everyone can post here!" threads I contribute to. Maybe someday I will earn my keep around here, but as for now I'm just having fun interacting and learning.

OH! Wait a second! One of the things I love most about this forum is that it's not nearly as cliquey as the other forums I've investigated before! There is a board-specific language around here, but for the most part it's pretty easy to pick up and almost every single one of the "memes" around here carries with it explanations that reside in ILX's vast archives. I LOVE that about this place, that there is no huge grouping of individuals here that's maddeningly inscrutible. The groups on this forum follow a logical pattern and the people in these groups seem more than happy to interact with those people outside the groups, making the groupings just "groups" and not the absurd "cliques" found elsewhere.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 25 September 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't read the thread at all, but for me my addiction came from meeting a bunch of people who were, for once, spot on about more or less everything, who didn't usually bitch about childish things, who took into consideration alternate points of view without bowing down to any certain consensus or talking utter bullshit like on other boards; who actually had something to say instead of spouting nonsense, yet still knew how to have fun. Basically meeting a lot of people I would like to know in real life but probably wouldn't within my limited smalltown environment. I LOVE YOUI ALL LET]'S HUG I AM DRU KAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 11

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 25 September 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Mostly boredom at work, but also the vast amount of ppl I have met through ILX are an encouragement to hang around. I like checking in with them & finding out what ppl are up to.
