"Nothing can describe evenings in prison."

I like this line. I reread this on holiday and it fascinated me more this time than last (about five years ago).

I don't think it's a book you can 'like' though it seems wasy to dislike. I think all this existentialist stuff stems from his goalkeeping.

What are your opinions? Has anyone on ILX ever shot an Arab for no reason?

Is this thread title missing an "l"?

First book I ever read in French. I think I prefer La Chute and La Peste to l'Etranger.

Oddly, I find Camus prose style almost soothing. I don't dislike it, but I take your point about not really being a book to love, also.

So "The Outsider" is the same as "The Stranger"?

l'etranger = The Fellowship of the ring

Bah. X-post.

It was published as The Stranger in the U.S. and The Outsider in the U.K. I think "outsider" is a bad and wrong translation though, I don't know why they didn't stick with "stranger" in the UK. I reread it recently, with some trepidation because it was a favourite when I was 16, but it held up well, I think it's fantastic, I love the deadpan, hardboiled style, I love the pagan epiphany at the end, and as for the beginning - "aujourd'hui, maman est morte", how perfect is that? One of the great short novels.

My wife is telling me that I'm a sociopath

TOMBOT, Friday, 24 September 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Why didn't they just call it 'The Foreigner'?

How many times have I said this while drinking good, white Burgundies?
