Fucked up and hilarious.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Never liked it. Ever. And now, supposedly, they're making a movie of it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

According to the fan site I was just looking at (www.jerriblank.com), the movie is done, wrapped in late June.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll make sure to avoid it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

amy sedaris is really that mean in real life too, apparently. which is wonderful.
my ex works with her every once in a while and would ask her to bring
in bananas from time to time. she never ate them in her presence and my friend
presumed that she was the leaving the peels in the subway terminals, though she
never admitted to it. "i eat them on the way home."

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

ITS VERY GREAT.

If wishes and buts were clusters of nuts, we'd all have a bowl of granola.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Principal Onyx Blackman so PWNZ.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant that amy sedaris would ask her to bring in bananas. not the other way around.
and i don't know why amy sedaris would not bring her own bananas either. we suspected
it was because she wanted people to speculate about them.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ay ay ay. I enjoy it. In fact, Amy Sedaris & I seem to have a similar sense of humour. A major difference though is that I tend to keep those kinds of jokes to myself.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but you don't make tv shows and star in movies now, DO YOU?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i loved strangers with candy, especially stephen colbert.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

LOVED IT.

The amount of comedic talent in the Sedaris family amazes me.

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

mr jellyneck.

big chaki (chaki), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

oh my god i can't wait to see the movie.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I dread seeing the movie -- it can't possibly live up to the classic episodes.

"I'd wake up with blood on my ass, and then we'd get high."

Jerri Blank, Monday, 27 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the episode where mr. noblet wants to be a rock star....priceless.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

So classic it's obscene. Season 3 out on DVD tomorrow.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Best Comedy Central series evah. (Not counting MST3K 'cause it originated on MN public access or Daily Show because it's not exactly a "series," or at least not a "fictional" one at any rate.)

"Why did you spread those vicious lies?"
"'Cause you didn't spread those vicious thighs."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, probably the gayest show ever whose creaters were all (more or less, I presume) straight, in terms of sensibility.

Alex, do you also hate Desparate Living and Female Trouble?

and Mommie Dearest?

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I found seasons 2 and 3 on DVD used at the video game store for $12 each a month ago. OH HAPPY DAY.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

OK, I really bumped it because the "laces" episode was on this morning, but I was just sort of taken aback by the Alex angle.

Eric H: not a troll, with one exception (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

I've been rewatching them gradually. Yesterday morning I watched the one where Mr. Jellinak (sp?) and the gym teacher have a fake marriage to provide an example to the kids, who are all also in fake marriages, and Stephen Colbert gets jealous.

I am unreasonably good at imitating Jerri Blank's opening-credits spiel: "I stole the TEE-VEE." Sarah and I also like to quote "Quandary...what's that mean?" and "Squirrel."

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry, but I have to go with Alex on this one.

I know, you're all going to be like your opinion doesn't count. You haven't see enough episodes, but I can't even consider it, plus I don't remember what time it was on, so I don't know when to watch it.

I saw two episodes. It was one of those "To Be Continued" ones, so I caught both. I didn't get it at all!!!! It doesn't make sense, and I get the jokes, but it's not that funny at all.

You would have to have eaten candy from a stranger to find all that crap funny.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know there were people under 40 who didn't "get" this show.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Anyone know anything about the movie?

Jimmy Mod Is Great At Getting Us Into Trouble (ModJ), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

it's probably going to be bad a la Run Ronnie Run....?

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

"jerri, did you wipe your ass on the bathroom towels?"

"yesss. i was in a hurry."

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

"I remember this was this one song about a welcome table, and people liked to... sit... at... it." -- to Rebecca, from "Blank Stare", Part 1

Oh, fucking hillarious!!!!!

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Anyone know anything about the movie?

I've heard it's great. It found a buyer at Sundance and will be coming out in the Fall.

I finally found a place to buy Exit 57 DVDs as well: http://www.brutallo.com/newexit.html

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

The "cult song" about the "welcome table" is the old standard "River of Jordan" (the version they're singing is, I believe, the Carter Family's)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

also, the "cult" episode is the only two-parter and is DEFINITELY not representative of the show. it's one of the few times the characters are almost entirely removed from the central setting of the school.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I don't remember the cult one being especially good.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

i, like jerri, wanted a piece of rebecca. rowr.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

hey, I like the cult episodes, but they are pretty abberant - the characters are not in their usual relationships or context. The funniest bits come from Mr. Noblet being instantly converted to the cult thru no effort of their own...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

I watched half an episode of this yesterday. Turned it off while mumbling to myself, "I thought Nick said this was funny." Cause, you know, I know he has good taste generally. But somehow, in ways I don't fully understand, this show blows goats.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Well it's weird, because as I was drunkenly attempting to explain to someone, possibly you, the other night, most of the humor is really crude and profane, but there is also this string of great absurdist verbal humor running through the whole thing. Like when the principal says, "I'm an obtuse man, so I'll try and be oblique." Really, it's those jokes that I love the most.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I just find Amy Sedaris distasteful. It's not the jokes, it's just her. She's fucking obnoxious.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

"i'm not pushing you away, i'm pulling me toward myself"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 26 May 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I caught the first episode of this show at ATP last weekend. Loved it. Glad to know they've made a movie. Principal Blackman is teh shiznit: "Educate yourself to THIS reality"

Stew (stew s), Sunday, 28 May 2006 00:17 (nineteen years ago)

from what i've heard, the movie is essentially an expanded version of the 1st episode, actually!

blackman is great! also, i can't wait to see what happens between jellineck and noblet!

I have links to the transcript and audio of 'the trip back' on my old blog but i think the links might be dead by now:

http://katie.mindphone.org/2004_04_01_katharine_archive.html

I cant remember all of it but it seemed like a lot of jerri's dialogue was taken straight from florrie. '18 carat pimp' 'stick of pot' etc etc. Some monologues taken almost word for word too.

ps: nice pics of amy, hst and bukowski (NSFW) in that blog that id forgotten about:

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

oooh i need that trapper keeper box set!
i gotta find someone to go w/ me to this. people are lik e'haha' and i'm like 'no i'm serious, i really want to go!'

from someone who was at premiere:
I thought it was really funny. The plot wasn't quite as strong as the storylines for a lot of the TV show episodes, but it was still just as funny as the show. Jokes come barreling at you constantly. I, along with most everyone else in the theater, laughed non-stop for the entire 86 minutes. There were parts where I laughed until I had tears streaming down my face and could barely breathe. I can't wait to see the movie again on the weekend of the 7th, when it opens in DC. For those of you who have already seen it (and for those who haven't, don't worry, these aren't spoilers), my absolute favorite parts, which I can't wait to watch over and over on DVD, are: 1. The opening (prison), 2. Jerri's drug-induced freakout and 3. the Bollywood scene. So yeah, even though the story wasn't as good as many of the episodes, I don't think I've ever laughed as hard, or as much, at a movie in my life. My friends (who also saw it at the premiere) and I have been quoting the movie non-stop. Yes, they recycle some of the jokes and lines, but I'm glad they do. It makes it familiar, and it's what we all know and love. Besides, there's plenty of new material. It's just as quotable as the show. Mmmph, those were some good times!

note: probably a very biased positive review cause this chick is like #1 swc fan

tehresa, who will here remain anonymous (tehresa), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:42 (nineteen years ago)

ive been scared that this is going to dimish my love for swc but, really, as long as they keep up with the backwards lines like "im not pushing you away. im pulling me closer to myself" ill be happy.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i wouldn't expect it to be like, the most amazing movie of all time, and it might be a tad disappointing, but i'm still excited!

"We came as soon as we felt like it."

Is it at all known that Amy Sedaris is deeply hot, or should I have kept that one to myself?

I don't really like the animated opening sequence, in season two, though

"I stole the TV"????

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

no way the cartoon is classic. "but now I'm BACK IN SCHOOL!"

"I stole the TV"??????

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see what your problem is with that line...? (I think its funny, but then I always heard it as "I stoled a TV!" Its totally the kind of random exclamation/confession you hear junkies make)
