People who needlessly endanger the lives of their children by pushing their baby strollers out into busy traffic without looking first, or pulling them by the hand across the middle of a busy street,

It never ceases to amaze me how often I see someone doing this, whether it's because they're talking on a cell phone, tripping out on some substance, or just plain stupidity. I just was driving my car up a deserted side-street, and this dad with a kiddle strapped into a bike seat behind him decided that--even though it would take maybe 10 seconds for me to pass by--he'd cut in front of me, across my lane, to get to his own driveway. Jesus, man, isn't the life of your child worth waiting, like your WIFE DID?

Incredibly fucking dud. People that have this little concern for their children shouldn't be allowed to breed ever again.

Attn: parents (especially DUMBASS parents).

I cannot endorse these sorts of baby carrying devices enough. For the love of god.

holy fuck i was just about to start thi sthread

dysøn (dyson), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

And 'baby rucksacks' are adorable, much preferable to strollers.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

i had some lady take me out with a stroller at lunch - like having one gives her the right to dart around wherever she pleases on the effing sidewalk without showing even the slightest concern for any other human being¡

dysøn (dyson), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Most people, when they become parents, become soooo protective over their children, to the point of personality-alteration. These parents seem to become more aware, cautious, and focused in dangerous settings.

On the other hand, there seem to be a lot of people who, when they become parents, they think about their status as Parent Of Child as a sorta dangerous-situation-trump-card, like "oh, I know for a fact you won't try it cuz I've got a kid" and just assume the onus for the safety of their child should lie on everyone else around them.

xpost EXACTLY DUDER

Wait, you were in a stroller, dyson? Why was the lady pushing you around in a stroller? Fraternity prank?

HOLY SHIT, I'M NOT EVEN LOOKING!!!!!!

Seriously, Sean's OTM. You'd be amazed what you see of this walking around NYC. People seem to forget that they're endangering their own child's well-being/life. Baby Bjorns are good, but ya can't go everywhere with'em, though. And after a while, they're really a strain on the back.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to photoshop a bus in there

dysøn (dyson), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago)

No, a dinosaur!

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:42 (twenty years ago)

A bus being driven by a dinosaur talking on a cell phone!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm gonna say...classic.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

That pose (Alex's; one hand on hip, the other on the stroller bar, knee bent, head turned, casually rocking the army fatigue shorts, beatific smile) is fantastic. It's like it's from the pages of the middle-aged punker version of Sears Maternity or something of that type (and I mean that as a compliment) (as much as a comment so seemingly damning can be spun as a compliment, at least).

This tendencty is RIFE in Berkeley. If you even DARE to come within a meter of a stroller, you are a bush-loving fascist!

"After doing these concerts in French, I usually had the temporary illusion that I could actually speak French, but as soon as I walked out on the street, and someone asked me simple directions, I realized I couldn’t speak a single word. As a result of this inadequacy, I found that the people I had the most rapport with were the babies. And one of the things I noticed about these babies was that they were apparently being used as some kind of traffic testers. Their mothers would be pushing them along in their strollers--and they would come to a busy street with lots of parked cars--and the mother can’t see what the traffic is like because of all the parked cars--so she just sort of edges the stroller out into the street and cranes her head out afterwards. And the most striking thing about this is the expression on these babies’ faces as they sit there in the middle of traffic, stranded, banging those little gavels they’ve all got and they can’t even speak English. "

Parents round here use their kids' pushchairs (usually the trendy three-wheeled variety) as fucking snowploughs, just barging through other pedestrians like we couldn't POSSIBLY have any claim to be standing in the way of someone with a Child.
