Who's your favorite Muppet?

Rowlf was mentioned on the psychotherapy thread and warm childhood memories gave me inpsiration. Rowlf rocked; he could play the piano, he looked at life with a smile, and was about 8 million times smarter than everyone thought he was. He quite clearly rocked.

Who's yer fave?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dude, the Swedish Chef. Does anyone remember the Swedish Chef cereal? That was the best thing ever invented, too bad it's gone. I love that Swedish Chef.

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Beaker. His constant expression of terror rox0r.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Don't be ridiculous. It's clearly the best, the most BEAUTIFUL, the most TALENTED, and I'll kick your ASSES if you disagree with me when I say... MISS PIGGY!!!

masonic boom, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Wakka, wakka, wakka... it has to be Fozzie Bear!!!!

Got the Muppets album at home, and there's a brilliant bit with Fozzie and Kermit! Damn, I need to watch the Muppet Movie tonight. Scott Walker's in it you know.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Does it have to be from the Muppet Show? If not, then the ultimate Jim Henson creation is Oscar the Grouch. I bet he doesn't like tennis.

DG, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Swedish Chef, but the hippie band have a special place in my heart too.

Pick any music. Now imagine the Muppets playing it. At least 50% instant improvement.

John Davey, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I had a strange infatuation with the girl in the operating theatre with long, straight, yellow hair.

Madchen, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd definitely have to say Fozzie Bear too. On a related theme though what was the name of the dreadlocked muppet that hosted the revamped muppet show about 5 years ago (it was probably longer than that). He wasn't my favourite muppet.

Jonnie, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

ooh dear I found that straight haired nurse strangely appealing too (when I was about 8) but I have to agree that Rowlf was the genius of the show, such a showman. I had a whopping great Kermit hand puppet too that was ace.

cabbage, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

girl in the operating theatre with long, straight, yellow hair = grate grrl-fish guitarist in band = (I thought) GLORIA but was correctly korrekted by someone on the Twin Bitch. Only I hav forgot the actual name...

mark s, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yup, that nurse was hot, I think it was the lips and the way she shook her hair. I hated Sam The Bald Eagle though - he kinda scared me.

Pete, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Animal of course.

I hate kermit.

Kermit is the Tom Hanks of the muppets. Hi ho my ass.

Gonzo or Miss Piggy
I think my love of bitchy diva actresses came from her.

anthony, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The old gits and the swedish chef. I have a V/VM record with the swedish chef doing the 12 days of christmas on it. i really want to find the original of this.

The chickens are obviously important to the chef routine, so they get a vote so does the Sax player in the band, kindled my love of baritone sax for ever.

Ed, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I always loathed Miss piggy and thought Kermit was spinelss. Fozie was just an ass and Gonzo was insecure. Only Rolf seemed stable. I liked that hug e monster one though.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I would've laid £50 at 5-1 on Kate liking Miss Piggy best. Her karate guitar work gave it away.

Mine's Rowlf too, but what about Hoots, the jazz owl? And no-one's said either Bert or Ernie.

Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem: what a band. Imagine them at Dingwalls.

chris, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oscar CERTAINLY counts; he's my #3. (Mr. Snuffle-Upagus has been my #2 since I learned that people's insistence that he was imaginary was causing panic attacks/nervous breakdowns in some children.)

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Waldorf and Statler have always been my heroes. They're pretty much the inspiration for my whole career in journalism ("do you actually like music?" one Select reviews editor once asked me) and my outlook on life generally. They are the fucking bomb, sin duda alguna

Mark Morris, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ally: Croonchy Stars!! I used to collect the boxes (there were 3 I think). "How many times can you find the word 'rutabaga' on this box? (not including this sentence)" "Rutaba - almost!" "Rutabaga on the side panel doesn't count!" "Rutabaga Rutabaga - twice in a row doesn't count!" The cereal itself - slightly puffy little cinnamon stars that got soggy rather quickly. Didn't last.

My fave: not on the Muppet Show, but the question does not require this. The guy on Sesame Street who plays piano, but gets so immensely frustrated that he just bangs his entire head on the keyboard over and over.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I have the Muppet Christmas album, which must have the Swedish Chef on it somewhere... I think it has John Denver on it as well, though. Will have a look when I get a spare minute... it's hidden in the depths of my closet.

Paul Strange, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

'Nother vote for the two old geezers in the balcony seats. Absolutely fucking brilliant! Well, maybe they're just okay. No, wait, they suck! They're terrible! Worst ever! Booooo!! Okay, maybe not that bad. Actually, they're quite good. In fact, they're brilliant! Encooooore!!

AP, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Cookie Monster for his directionality. He knows what he wants and how to get it. He looks warm.

JM, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

When I was little I loved the sax player, whose name turns out to be Zoot. I also liked Gonzo's hook-shaped nose, and now his chicken fetish intrigues me. As I got older though, I have to say that I most clearly identify with Statler and Waldorf, they are the best. A woman I used to work with called me Statler and aco-worker Waldorf.

On a related note, if you are ever so unlucky as to find yourself in Florida, and happen to wander into the People's Rebublic of Disneyland, I highly recommend the Muppets 3-D movie-fantastic, and probably the only reason to go to "MGM Studios".

Christ, did someone mention the Muppets Christmas album with John Denver? Much as I love the Muppets in all incarnations (I went to a press screening of Muppets From Space, and it was loads of hacks with their kids, and just about four of us unaccompanied by brats. I felt very creepy) that album is just about the worst thing ever. My sister had it when we were kids, and made my parents play the tape over and over again in the car...

Mark Morris, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The two old balcony guys remind me of my dad and my uncle.

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

If we're talking about just the Muppets then Beaker, also Miss Piggy was pretty sexy. If we're talking about Jim Henson creations then my favourite is the wonderful Grover.

Is it just me or is Sam the bald eagle actually golfer Jim Furyk?

Ally C, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Grover bothered me.
In muppet realted news Marlon Brando on the set of "the score" would refer to director Frank Oz as Miss Piggy and ask if he would direct better if his hand was stuck up Marlons ass. Frank Oz w2as the voice of Miss Piggy.

anthony, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The idea of *any* hand up Brando's sagging, endlessly spreading and exceeding white upon white ass is disturbing to me and my tender sensibilities. Though the image will doubtless gratify Dan and his sense of the Deeply Wrong and Perverted.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I find the notion of Miss Piggy being sexy scarier than the idea of Frank Oz giving Marlon Brando a proctology exam, but I'm way weird like that.

Ally, Tuesday, 10 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I hate being predictable.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think its funny the voice of Miss Piggy has a movie starring Ed Norton, De Niro , Brando and Angela Bassett. Who did he sell his soul to.

anthony, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Don't worry, Dan, this way I can enjoy the jokes but redirect any potential ire. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

What's the matter with you people your favorite should be Rizzo the Rat.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Snuffleupagus speaks too slowly and I get annoyed. Thus the only panic attack that could be induced in *me* by the claim that he's imaginary is if I thought you meant *I'd* imagined him and he hadn't been on the show after all and I'd been getting intensely irritated with a hallucination of a big hairy mammoth with a cold, which would be a worrying revelation indeed.

It's a tie between Animal and Rowlf for me, though it used to be Gonzo and Fozzy when I was little. On Sesame St I nominate Oscar and the Cookie Monster, who embody two different approaches to life which are both very dear to me.

Muppet annuals = classic. I have two, which both cost 20p or something from jumble sales. One of them is pretty big and chunky and has loads of scripts and each character speaks in a different wacky typeface and you get to find out all their names and there are loads of stories and scripts and drawings and stuff. Yay. The other is thinner and has photos from the show instead of cartoons and has more boardgames and stuff and fewer stories and less Swedishcheffery and less surreal Kermit-distressing disruption of stories by dancers polka-ing through the middle shouting "mahna mahna!", so isn't nearly as good, but still pretty classic by sheer virtue of containing Muppets.

Oh, and search: Muppet Show (complete classic), destroy: Fraggles (zzz) and quite probably Labyrinth, which isn't actually that bad, but Bowie in obscenely tight tights is a BAD THING to inflict upon children, or anyone else.

rebecca, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

What piece of 19th Century literature should be turned into the next Muppet Movie. It is obvious that Muppets From Space was a bad idea - so back to the adaptations. Christmas Carol was ACE. Treasure Island slightly less so.

Pete, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The scariest thing was my ex-roomie and I watching childrens' TV early one morning after a 3-day acid trip. Sesame Street came on, and the feature on Monsterpiece Theatre was "Twin Beaks" which was a take-off of Twin Peaks in a town filled with birds with two beaks, and a log lady who had a log that everyone asked questions to, and it would open its eyes and say "How should I know? I'm just a log!"

We watched in abject terror and fear and amazement for the entire length of the segment, then turned to each other and whispered "Did you just see that? Then it was *real*? You saw it too? So I didn't just hallucinate that?"

I'm glad I was too old for snuffuluffagus, that would have scared the shit out of me.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As an ex-French student I would like to see Muppet Mme Bovary cast as follows: Miss Piggy in the title role; Kermit as Charles; Gonzo as Homais; Beaker as Justin; Pierce Brosnan as Rudolph (it's a live action Muppet film, OK?); Leonardo di Caprio as Leon etc. etc. The other Muppets would find roles a-plenty among the village folk and so on.

Emma, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Re: _Labrynth_ - yes, Bowie + tights = bad. But Jennifer Connolly + movie always = good. If it's a stupid movie (_Career Opportunities_), she makes it tolerable; if it's a brilliant movie (_Requiem for a Dream_), she is mana from heaven.

I'll give it up for Beaker & the Swedish Chef. I only wish I could toss my pots as well as he does / did / will always do / done / diddy.

The correct answer is:.... (can we use the muppet babies?) Animal BABY! For the line, "Me play, me play, eeeyah yah yah!"

If we can't use the Muppet Babies, then the answer is Gonzo.

My best friend occasionally refers to me as Grover, which I think is fine because he's easily my favourite muppet. I also like Oscar very much, especially his laugh. When I was a kid, I loved imagining what his house was like when he would disappear into the garbage can and they'd use sound effects to signify a cavernous space. I think they meant a Dr. Who-like "larger volume inside than contained within outside" sort of dwelling, but I liked thinking of it as a massive cave running underneath the street.

I was never crazy about The Muppet Show, but I remember liking Zoot, Statler and Waldorf. Fozzy Bear had a pretty great voice.
