Warm Alcoholic Beverages?

When the air turns cold, and I don't see the sun for three days straight, I begin to crave a drink that will warm my heart and erase my troubles -- or at least my short term memory.

The only ones I can think of are warm apple cider with rum (which is great) and coffee with whiskey (which tastes like paint thinner). Any suggestions?

mulled wine? i don't like it myself but others do when it is cold!

gem (trisk), Friday, 1 October 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'll try it.

mulled wine rocks, i had it for the first time last weekend. the temptation to drink it too fast is its only downside.

i don't mind it as long as it is a more spicy/cinnamony than sweet brew. but usually it is kinda sweet so no good for me. it definitely is very effective at warming you up on a cold day though hurting!

Ah, the beautiful sadness of autumn. Perhaps I shall take a drive through New England to see the foliage.

HOTT SAKE IS LUSH!! Tom OTM as he always is, the big dreamboat.

Also mulled wine - ignore the snobs and buy the packet stuff, a box of cheap Chilean, and snooze the winter away in a warm boozy fug.

Glogg is very popular in Andersonville. It's a Swedish thing. I've never had it with the almonds in it, but it sounds nummy.

posted this on the autumn drinks thread last month, still awesome:

Hot Buttered Rum:
1 ½ oz. Cruzan Single Barrel Rum
2 heaping teaspoons hot buttered rum mix***
Mix ingredients with small amount of hot water in heated coffee mug and stir well with a spoon. Once mixed thoroughly, top off mug with hot water.
Serve with a swizzle stick.

***Hot Buttered Rum Mix***
1 lb. light brown sugar
1/2 lb. salted butter
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon high-quality vanilla extract
Yields approx. 1 1/2 lbs

(I found this recipe through a search, the one I actually used was similar but called for Mount Gay Eclipse rum. Anything in that range should work.)

Hot Chocolate goes well with whatever liquor you want.
Use Droste cocoa and follow the directions on the back of the box, which basically say: "warm up some milk, in a separate bowl mix together cocoa powder, sugar and milk into a paste that is as sweet as you want, whisk this mixture into the warm milk until incorporated, serve in mugs with marshmallows or whipped cream."
I just make a cocoa/sugar mixture with liquor such as amaretto, Luxardo, baileys, creme de menthe or chambord and then add it to the warm milk. If I make the mint one I put a candy cane as the stirrer.

i still have not tried hot buttered rumz yet. i really want some though.

carne asada, Thursday, 27 December 2007 15:21 (seventeen years ago)

I had hot buttered rum for the 1st time on Christmas but it seemed like it had heavy cream in it too. Nearly as filling as eggnog and sneakily potent.

Winter Pimms?

the higgs, Thursday, 27 December 2007 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

winter pimms aka pimms no 3, based on brandy and good for serving hot (with apple juice)

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

hot buttered rum is great. there was a recipe in NYT recently, and we've been using that, and keeping a jar of the batter in the fridge.

colette, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

ian, Thursday, 27 December 2007 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
