Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Policy co-ordinator David Cameron said he found "depressing" music by The Smiths and Pulp "strangely uplifting".

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, this was on Today this morning. He also mentioned Radiohead.

Other Tories liked: Dido (unsurprisingly), Meatloaf and REM.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw one of them saying he loved Dido, suprise suprise

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw some clips of this on the news. There is nothing funnier in the world than Tories tying to look hip and cool.

Where can I see this film in full?

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It was nicholas 'dr evil/fatty' soames liking Dido I think. He was most unconvincing but he's probably about the mindset of the average dido fan.

Ed (dali), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the same Dr Fox as from the Brass Eye special?

"DR FOX (radio presenter) : Genetically, paedophiles have more genes in common with crabs than they do with you and me. Now that is scientific fact. There's no real 'evidence' for it but it is scientific fact."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 4 October 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

'Dr Fox prescribes Tory fun' is the best caption I've seen on the Beeb site in ages.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, Scissor Sisters, Radiohead, Dido, its all fairly predictable. I suspect the only reason no one mentioned The Darkness was because Blair got there first.

Unveiling the conference set to the strains of remixed Elvis hit "A Little Less Conversation (A Little More Action)", he said the aim was to be "intimate and engaging".

Robin C to thread!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything that outsold Smile this week - perhaps not so much Green Day or Marilyn Manson, but definitely Joss Stone, Maroon 5, Tom Jones/Jools Holland and Groove Armada; the ten-CDs-a-year brigade have definitely been out and about.

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 4 October 2004 08:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw one senior Tory being asked what kind of music he liked this weekend. After a moment's pause he said "Dido" but it was obvious that he had just grasped at the only contemporary pop name he could remember. I was hoping the interviewer would ask him to name his favourite track or even album, because it was obvious he'd be absolutely fucked.

They have obviously been told to appear to be in touch with popular culture and in some cases it's deeply and embarrassingly fake. I preferred it when they just admitted they listened to Elgar and Handel's Messiah and recordings Winston Churchill's wartime speeches.

frankiemachine, Monday, 4 October 2004 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories don't like the Beach Boys? I find that hard to believe.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

They sided with Mike Love.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Labour wheeled out Vera Duckworth last week, so I reckon it's even-stevens. The Tories have very cleverly got their name on all the 'hip' raido sations this morning, and 'young' people will grin inanely at the conference reports all week, but the messages may well sink in, if there are any. It's quite a good move by the Tories really.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

jack straw loves dylan.

Pete W (peterw), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am surprised that the Ken Clarke A-level cliché has not been wheeled out yet.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you hold us in such contempt, Jerry?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Its *not* hard to believe Fox is a tory. But did he really date Natalie Imbruglia???

stevie (stevie), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's this Dr. Fox

http://www.conservatives.com/siteimages/newsimages/standard/fox_speech.jpg

not this one

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1890000/images/_1892471_fox_chan5150.jpg

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah! I mean, not this one:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1890000/images/_1892471_fox_chan5150.jpg

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr. Liam Fox MP, as well as having dated Natalie Imbruglia, once called for the reintroduction of flogging of criminals, and was voted one of the sexiest men in Parliament.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Too many Dr Fox's for my liking, da dah.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not kidding...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the sexiest men in Parliament

Well there's not much competition is there really? Jesus, did they just pick someone with a pulse?

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Natalie claims they were only ever friends.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Liam Fox explains why Natalie felt so torn.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

He's on BB2 in a minute.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a little late.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

(Spesh as Big Brother 2 happened years ago!)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Nick is jealous.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I gotta get me some jowls.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

They heart pattie Labelle, who hearts them back too.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

His speech was terrible, and laughable. A real back-to-basics, wasn't-Thatcher-great, it's-political-correctness-gone-mad rant. His main criticism of the Iraq war was that the soldiers didn't have the correct protective equipment. He is loathesome.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Dave mean Patti Boulaye?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Fatty Soames once dated Dido

Didoismus (Dada), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Patti Boulaye, she's a rabid Christian nutcase

Didoismus (Dada), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Hoon is a big Brian Wilson fan, and not just the MP for Cunninghame North.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet tory 20/30somethings i.e typical city suited work in finance types have Keane and Coldplay albums by the truckload.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

It's funny the way no one gives the impression of ever having actually met a Tory voter.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well, have you?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I think so. Though no one of my age, for a while, that I am aware of, it's true.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

My best mate in a tory voter and wannabe MP who likes Stereolab, Tom Jones, Bobby Conn and 70s funk.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

There you go. It takes all sorts.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

A good friend of mine stood for council election in Reading as a Conservative. Didn't win though. He likes emo & indie rock stuff, bit of nu-metal, some hip hop & R&B.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The only known Tory voter in my office sits opposite me. On his pile of CDs: Jet, The Zutons, Terrorvision, The Darkness and The Libertines. He doesn't like the Streets because "Mike Skinner can't sing and is obsessed with drugs".

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I did consider pointing out the Libertines thing but decided it was futile.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The labour and lib dems probably like the same stuff too.

Natural Law probably has the best taste.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I forgot, the above mentioned Tory friend has also been known to listen to Crass.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve Davis is a huge Northern Soul and Magma fan, and he was always 'hoping to pot a few reds' for Maggie.

Kenny Everett was simultaneously both a Tory voter and Sid Snot.

I might vote Tory for a laugh. Can't do any harm.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

In 1997, I had a 20-year-old flatmate who was a Scottish Tory voter. He also voted against devolution.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently, Edinburgh is full of them, Again, you'd never know it.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yes, this was in Edinburgh. Although my flatmate was unusual in being a *Scottish* tory-voting student; most of the student Tories are rich, posh and English.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to give away my advanced age with this one, but when I was a kid in Edinburgh I lived in the flat below Michael Ancram (seen above looking very awkward indeed with an acoustic guitar). Back in those days -- I'm talking 1968 or so -- he was actually a bit of a swinger. He wore suede shoes, 'coloured' shirts, and drove some phallic sports car (a Morton, an E-type, or an Aston Martin). I don't recall hearing him singing on the stairs, but I'm sure he was into the Beatles or the Tremoloes or someone like that.

I'm glad the Tories are not into stuff like Purcell and Handel; it means that stuff is up for grabs by radicals.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely Scottish Edinburgh Tories far out-number English Edinburgh Tories? I mean, Edinburgh had Tory MPs throughout the eighties, I don't know if it still does. Meanwhile, Fife had a communist. Wasn't Rifkind Edinburgh? How many English people are there in Edinburgh? I don't think there were very many back in the block party era.

Momus, that is a good story.

Purcell has just been on the radio. I can't remember the title, but it was ripe for appropriation by radicals. It mentioned LOVE.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Edinburgh has that reputation of being the 'english' scottish city. Gallacher is cool though - not only communist, but MP for 15 years. That's west Fife, though - that stuff doesn't fly here: St. Andrews is more Tory and English than Edinburgh. (actually, tends to be lib dem - socially conservative though, very middle class.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That story from Momus is excellent. I now have visions of a slightly portlier Austin Powers type ruffling Momus's hair and calling him sonny as he speeds off to check out the chicks at Portobello beach.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

(Correction: when I said 'Morton' I meant 'Morgan'. It's a long time since there were cars with British names... even Welsh ones.)

Momus (Momus), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm glad the Tories are not into stuff like Purcell and Handel; it means that stuff is up for grabs by radicals.

As if it weren't anyway.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

When I went to Be A Poll Clerk, I got a lift to the polling station off the man who was running the next polling station along. In the front window of his family's house were signs saying "NO TO DRUG REHAB CENTRE" and "KEEP GIBRALTAR BRITISH". They had a Hammond organ in their lounge. So perhaps they like Argent, or something.

Wi11iam Bloody Swy9art, Monday, 4 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I hate Oliver Letwin - and not just because I oppose his politics. I just look at the man and I'm overcome with loathing. He seems like the sort of smarmy, arrogant guy who is too stupid to realise how much everyone despises him. What kind of music does he like? I dunno - I bet he's a rockist. The tories are the rockist party.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 4 October 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I might vote Tory for a laugh. Can't do any harm.

-- PJ Miller (pjmiller6...), October 4th, 2004.

THIS IS HOW THE NAZIS GOT INTO POWER, 33 MILLION GERMANS VOTED HITLER "FOR A LAUGH"

Godwin Slaw, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can easily imagine Michael Ancram being into the Tremeloes.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Maidenhead has a Tory MP (she looks Tory) so I may have to postpone the rebirth of the Third Reich.

The Tories have been kind of embarrassing so far, at their conference. I suppose it is a trickle-down effect from their leader.

Wasn't Willie Whitelaw a big music fan?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Hoon is a big Brian Wilson fan, and not just the MP for Cunninghame North

There's an interview w/ the Hoon about his taste in music right here - probably not a lot better than most Tories really. Which is suprising for the the most senior Colin Newman lookalike in the Cabinet.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't suppose it would do for New Labour MPs wanting to hold on to their Daily Mail majority vote to start expressing love for Dizzee Rascal or Fennesz.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Also any Pat Nevin-style music-nut confessions would probably leave voters doubting their MPs; all that time spent listening to music? Isn't he supposed to, like, be running the country/fixing the hole in my roof/etc.?

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Ancram was my MP till 1987 in Edinburgh South, Gordon Brown stood against him and lost.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 08:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Charles Kennedy is a big Bowie fan - he thinks the Berlin period is his best, especially "Low"

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that Gordon Brown is a Big Star fan, not sure if it's true or not.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 09:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Consider yourself lucky Leigh, we had to put up with Steven bloody Norris as our MP for three terms!

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I hate Oliver Letwin - and not just because I oppose his politics. I just look at the man and I'm overcome with loathing.

I just have to look at his hair. I think it's carved, painted plaster.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention his odd looking bulbous face.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I (helped when Putney) voted out David Mellor!

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby = Hero of the Revolution

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's John Redwood that really gives me The Fear.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Busted on board.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 06:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Rick Wakeman attended the Tory Party conference this week - are ALL prog rockers right-wing? Is there a link with the Wagnerian pomp of high prog?

recidivist, Thursday, 7 October 2004 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you calling Busted prog?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not surprised about Charlie. He went to Uppingham School (Busted are toffs).
Is Gary Numan still a Tory?

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Numan's now a Blairite.

Well I warned you about Busted on whatever thread it was a few weeks back - I told you my sources were good! Dido to follow, and then fellow Uppingham alumnus Johnny Vaughan...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread, to be precise...

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I would be surprised about Dido.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(Are you saying that just because she went to private school, or for some other reason?)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

No I'm saying that because the Tories (via the foxhunting glam fascist Byron Ferrari) have contacted her management and are trying to enlist her services.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

As a fox substitute?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I was on the tube with a(n unknown, at least to me) group the other day, they looked quite rough but they had matching guitar cases. Also they were letching at the girls.

I'm not sure what my point is.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 7 October 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

It makes sense to me.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 08:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i shared a flight back from LA with Stereloab last week. it included an emergency landing in montreal, because the lady sitting in front of me had a heart-attack (the only other time i've been sent to LA was 11/09/01, and we were diverted to Edmonton, Canada, where we waited for a week for international airspace to reopen), but laetitia still looked stunning in the queue for passport control at Heathrow...

that busted interview made me hate them a whole lot.

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Busted interview = Geri Halliwell Thatcher love = what a load of twats. Jey kids - get right-wing - it's grebt. FOAD. Thanks.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i dimly remember that at some very early point in the jam's career weller said something about liking tories or thatcher or something, maybe busted are just copying him...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he did. Marcello claims (on the ILM sister thread to this) that he only said that to wind up Strummer, a theory I like.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

David Bowie to thread.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose Busted are too young to remember that the Conservative Party stands for more than just letting Charlie have more money.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How odd. I thought that the Conservative Party only stood for letting Charlie have more money for charlie.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 7 October 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)
