Have you ever taken snuff?

Following on from the 'chewing tobacco' thread I'm curious as to whether anyone in here has ever taken snuff.

I heard from a (probably unreliable) source that if snuff is inserted into the vagina it produces an internal 'sneezing' sensation which is both exciting and pleasant. I don't believe this myself obviously.....

What actually is snuff? I sort of thought it was like cocaine for the people of yesteryear. Is it a kind of tobacco?

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like some kind of crazy Hogarthian invention!

x-post...

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I did it in Jr. High .. but not in the vagina.

I just remember it causing a lot of eye-watering and sneezing and spitting. Ah yes, good times.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing with snuff is that it makes old men's spit and mucus turn a nasty brown colour. Do you really want that coming out of your bits in an intimate moment?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you still buy it????

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 4 October 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

they sell it behind the bar at the oxford union - i think befuddled old men are pretty much the target market for the snuff 'industry.'

i tried snuff once. it was a bit rubbish.

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What's it actually meant to do? Clear the sinuses? Block the sinuses?

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I am NOT clicking on that.

Just a bit of history, Mark. Pretty interesting, too!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember it being quite good in a headrush kind of way the one time I took it. It gives you the nastiest snot ever the next morning, though. Best left to pretentious students, I think (the same ones who smoke pipes, generally).

toby (tsg20), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Never tried the nose snuff, but the kind that goes in your mouth I have. Lots, when I was a teen. Gives quite a headrush, as well as an upset stomach if you swallow any of it.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 4 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

They passed some round after a posh dinner I had at university. I didn't take any, though most of the blokes round the table did. I just drank all the sherry instead.

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 4 October 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

So its like poppers for venerable old men then?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Try SNEED....snuff mixed with speed

popli kid, Monday, 4 October 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to school with some of the Walkmen for a bit and they were all into snuff. Minty headrush, that's all.

Loose Translation: Sexy Dancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 4 October 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of pure historical curiosity, I tried it when I was in my late teens. Without a près du corps, wig, and ruffled sleeves, it's not all that very amusing.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Used to be my band's drug of choice, innit. 'Cept that sounds a bit pretentious so it seems I 'ave to write in some kind of nondescript crap dialect to attempt to detract from the fact that we're all a big bunch of pansies. Hmm. Don't do it no more, tho'. Had to stop before the addiction kicked in, man.

emil.y (emil.y), Monday, 4 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried it once - it just felt like my sinuses were going to explode.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

the first (and only) time i took snuff was in student residence during 1st year university. we had just taken it and were headrushing hard when our whole floor was called into an emergency meeting and told that one of our fellow floor members had just been pronounced dead of natural causes. the combination of the shock and that disgusting tarry rush was enough to set me off it forever, kind of a guilt by association thing.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 4 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually have snuff in my mouth as I write this. Lots of people in Sweden use snuff instead of smoking, as it is a whole lot of less dangerous for your health. Note that this is the moist snuff that goes under your upper or lower lip; not the dry kind you inhale. The bad thing about it is that it's quite nicotine strong, I guess I get 20 cigarrettes worth of nicotine from the 6 pieces of snuff I regularly use per day.

TBA (TBA), Monday, 4 October 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought some snuff in The Temple Bar the other night in a fit of college nostalgia. I haven't touched it though as I've got a head cold and won't risk the mucky consequences.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 4 October 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried it when I visited Sweden - where they call it Snus, I think, right TBA? I don't know if I buy that it's less dangerous for your health than smoking, though.
There was a pleasant buzz, but a gnarly aftertaste that stuck around. And I would guess hardcore users must have some seriously grim teeth.

I wonder why in the U.S. it has sort of "redneck" connotations?

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never tried it, but then again I've never tried cigarettes either. I have a fear of addiction, which I think is pretty rational in my case as addictive behaviours run in my family. But if I did try something like it, I don't think it would be snuff. I don't like the idea of drugs going straight up my nose to my brain.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, it's Snus in Sweden. Ethymologically(sp?) it's basically the same word. The taste is what I like the best, actually, but the pleasant nicotine kick is soooo gone nowadays. The main drawback is of course the kickass addiction. I can last at most something around 3 hours after waking up before I have to get my first snus. Otherwise I get mean.

Actually the government had to take away the "Snus causes cancer" that is on the bottom of every snus 'case' since there hasn't been proven (up until now, at least) that snus causes cancer. The problem with cigarrettes is that the smoke gets down to your lungs, which are by far the most sensitive parts of your body. But it is dangerous for sure. People who have used it regularly for, say, 20 years have a bigger risk of developing diabetes since the constant inflow of nicotine creates a stress-like syndrom in your body (higher heart rate etc). The teeth staining isn't that bad if you brush your teeth at least twice a day and don't chain-snus from the moment you wake until the moment you fall asleep.

Actually snus had a lower class image in Sweden, only rednecks used it, but it is getting more and more used by well-educated people as well. And it is popular among feminist women!

TBA (TBA), Monday, 4 October 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I do remember seeing women with puffed out snus-lips in Umea and thinking it was pretty interesting.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Monday, 4 October 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Could it be the answer to the smoking ban?

I've really enjoyed Snuff the few times I've taken it, although I would never get into the habit because it's pretty bad from your sinuses to stick stuff up your nose all the time.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

I forgot this whole thing existed :0

yeah, it does remind me of swedish girls, no bad thing.
can you not get snuff with thc?

fandango (fandango), Monday, 1 May 2006 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Tried it once, just made me sneeze.

However, the Swedish stuff mentioned upthread you put under your lip (which I don't think is actually snuff, strictly speaking) did come in handy when I was at school. There was a Swedish kid on some kind of exchange programme that gave me a few bags.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 1 May 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

animal, Monday, 1 May 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

Toby OTM about the nasty snot. I have some snuff which I quite liked a while ago when I got it, but the novelty soon wore off and in fact I'd forgotten all about it until I saw this thread. It was funny sitting in the pub snorting though. I might give it another go, if it weren't for the fact that people might think I am taking lifestyle advice from the bbc website.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 1 May 2006 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh, they ripped that article off Country Life, who did a big piece on it last week, and I think CL have far more of a right to the lifestyle. ;-)
