i like how there's a "new answers" link at the bottom of the page so you don't have to scroll all the way back up on long threads. very clevah.

also the lack of graphics (banners, avatars, etc) is much appreciated.

Internet purists heart ILX, simply because it's content over style in the way that I was told the internet should be when I was growing up. This is why ILX are the best boards around today.

I like the way that it remembers what you've read with thread-level granularity; another messageboard I use only highlights threads which have been updated since your last logout, regardless of their read/unread status at that point.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not all junked up with smilies, shading, rails & boxes & shit. So more threads visible on a page.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

more room for PHOTO THREADS!

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the >ILwhatever link at the top right. It feeds my short attention span.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Later function.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the option to not read or respond to threads and posts that annoy me. i should really try that out sometime.

Faster loading and rendering, plus the fact that it's all plain old text means you can easily adjust your viewing experience by hitting control-plus or control-minus etcetera. I love to shrink it down to small font sizes and pretend I'm reading the newspaper.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the option at the bottom of the Search Options that allows you to travel back in time 1000 or however many days if there's nothing much interesting happening today.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the soothing blue colour of the links.

TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

from a distance it looks kinda like a document of some kind - handy for us office workers in pan-opticon mode...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i like when you post a message it automatically puts you back to the bottom of the thread

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, this hadn't actually occurred to me until just now, but I like that individual threads occupy only one page -- which, among other things, allows you to be able to search within the whole thread at once.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Also: no sigs. Man, if I had to read the same stupid slogan or quote or song lyric EVERY FUCKING TIME someone posted, I'd rip my hair out.

The text-based-ness of ILX allows me to read it on my phone when I'm bored on the bus or whatever.

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Its the (x unread) thing I like the way it knows where your are up to in a thread (providing you read the whole thread when you click on it)

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, but jarl, that's why the later button is so cool, cos it means you can half read, eg the debate thread, then come back to it later :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

let's face it - it's damn near perfect.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never read another message board unless google has randomaly sent me there.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how it forced me to learn some html.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally in love with the Later function too. I remember the days before the Later function. *sigh* Things were different then. But anyway, yeah, I also really like the search capabilities.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I try to read other message boards but the design gets in the way with colors and shit. ilx roXors.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! i remember the days before "unread messages" ;)

it is far and away the clearest to read, easiest to use message board format i've come across, i don't understand why people persist with all that complicated stuff...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"ah, but jarl, that's why the later button is so cool, cos it means you can half read, eg the debate thread, then come back to it later :)"

Damn I never knew that, cheers, yeah its pretty much perfect then.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, ILX really points out the design flaws in other message boards. Most other message boards split threads into multiple pages. How is that easier? Most other message boards waste bandwidth with graphics. Who are they tring to impress? The list is endless, really.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i only come here and stay here for the content. i like more colourful, busy designs for msg boards (avatars, more geekstats etc.) but it depends who is designing them and how generally. multiple pages can be useful, as of course, can graphics, be.
