Emirates Stadium - Arsenal's new home

I guess the name Ashburton Grove was never going to stick, but I can't see Emirates Stadium becoming popular. Apparently it's common in the US, according to this article: http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,14173,1320212,00.html , but I'd rather it didn't catch on here.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

JJB Stadium, its already here.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the name will change when the sponsorship deal does apparently, which is just daft. i'd expect fans to call it what they want and leave these marketing monikers to the media and corporate types.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

But if it's only ever been called Emirates Stadium then what are the fans going to call it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Will the media be obliged to call it emirates stadium? I presume they will.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Again, what else could they call it?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Highbury 2: The Next Renovation

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ashburton Grove Stadium
The New Highbury
Arsenal's New Stadium

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Money Pit Stadium

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Will Arsenal still be the nearest tube station, or will it get its name changed back to avoid confusing fans?

(When the DLR opened, they were careful not to call their Millwall stop Millwall, because it's nowhere near Millwall FC's ground)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Arsenal @ Ashburton Grove

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The Walkers Stadium, The Reebok Stadium, The McCain Stadium, all wrong!

Davel (Davel), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

TMFDHQ

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i think Millwall FC should be renamed South Bermondsey Wanderers. But if geographical pedantry was this rife in football then QPR would be SBR or WCR or even EAR

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and Grimsby Town would be Cleethorpes Beach FC.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Feel sorry for Coventry fans they are stuck with: The Jaguar Arena [sponsorship deal signed last year]

This year Ford, Jaguar's owners anounced the closing down of the Jaguar factory in Coventry.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The Walkers Stadium,

they were going to call this: The Walkers Bowl

but the leicester fans made them change it as Bowl could be a Bowl of Crisps - which would mean rival fans would take the piss out of them.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Should thread title be altered to 'The Arsenal Stadium Mystery'?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was little, I thought Arsenal were from Woolwich.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was little, I thought I was.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

They were........... before you were born

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ashburton Grove would be such a cool name, up there with Roots Hall and Underhill.

On a personal note I was gutted when Derby decided to call their new ground Pride Park. All the time while it was being built it was called Chaddesden Sidings which would have been cool (obv. not as good as the Baseball Ground).

Davel (Davel), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

With Fowler at Man City isn't it about time they renamed their stadium, The Nose Bowl?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Railway-based football ground names are always good. Millwall's ground should be called Bermondsey Viaduct.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Arsenal tube is going to be rerenamed to Gillespie Road.

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

At least they don't have to change the tiling

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

'The goods yard ground' would be a good one or even 'the york way ground' would be good.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Stable door and horse bolting aplenty. The lesson is clear - do not have any geograp[hical identifier in your stadium, as fans, being the topophiliacs they are, will dump the sponsor name and use the one which seesm more authentic (more authentic = less corporate, rather than 'realer') hence the Cellnet Riverside became known as the Riverside, and the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium became the St mary's Stadium. The Reebok stadium avoided this by giving no-one a look in. But since the colloquial name for that area was Horwich which Technically, ins't Bolton, the 'old' name was unlikely to stick.

It's different here - It's been called Ashburton Grove for so long that I think it's stuck already. Then Emirates are more associated with Chelsea, so at the time when Arsenal fans would be hoped (by Emirates, at least) to be using the name, the Chelsea link will be fresh-ish. There's also the fact that it could just be called the Arsenal Stadium, which would be no mystery (DYS!!!!!!!!)

xpost with pinefox, you post joke kiillah

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Holloway Road becoming Emirates Station?

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

here's an interesting one:

should they re-open york way station on match days only?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Please reassure me that Gay Meadow is still called Gay Meadow

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

At least you don't support a team which plays at The Fans' Stadium.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

£100m for an eight year shirt-and-stadium deal could be a big mistake for Arsenal, I reckon. Cashflow to fund the ground - players are ageing gradually. It's all going to be about keeping Wenger, otherwise this could go badly wrong.

Dadaismus - yes, it is still called Gay Meadow.

___ (___), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate our stdaium name. I am building a low-level campiagn to get us to abandon the tems 'Fans Stadium'. It reeks of stalinism and gak-fuelled marketing cockfarmery.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Kingsmeadow" is an excellent name for a stadium. I'm with you, dave.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What about The Expensive Noose Round Our Neck That Is Going To Take Us Down Stadium?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

How about THE PEOPLE'S STADIUM?

the bellefox, Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wishful Thinking Stadium. (for Matt DC)

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Forward Boldy, marching in step with the great and fearless boyle stadium?

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pride-Comes-Before-A-Fall Park or Stadio del Hubris

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed, Ashburton Grove is nowhere near York Way as was!

Ricardo (RickyT), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Volkspark

KonigsWiesestadion

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Expensive Noose Round Our Neck Stadium can be shortened of course to ENRON STADIUM - seems apt somehow

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Why stop at the stadium? I'm all in favour of branding everything. One vote for the Nayim Half-Way Line.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just been informed by a colleague that the new stadium is not where I though it was.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hehe.

the houston astros' stadium was enron field (sorry can't remember it's real name), and quickly became minute maid field within weeks of the badness occuring...

some of the american sponsorship names are RUB-ARSH in the extreme...

ALSO is there not a conflict of interests if THE REFEREES are sponsored by emirates as well???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Conflict of interests do not exist in football. Idiot Steve.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

silly little me.

Thats brilliant, must update Championship Manager NOW.
Sadly hockey seems ripe for this kind of crap. The Fleet Center, the ACC Center etc etc.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure they'll come up with some sorta nickname for the place anyways.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Spurs' fans certainly will

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My mate used to stay just off Plumstead High Street, just along from the Woolwich Arsenal and claimed that some overgrown old steps in his back garden originally formed part of the terracing of Arsenal's ground. I think he was lying (or lied to).

Onimo (GerryNemo), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Gooneria', was the first name that sprang to mind.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you are wasted here Sir.

Brigadier Rainham Steele, Mrs (blueski), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised they don't just take the opportunity to close Gillespie Road station. There are too many stops along that stretch of the Piccadilly line, and that one only seemed to be there for Highbury.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Mrs. Brigadier Rainham Steele

Madam,

It's well known to my intimates that I am wont to be wasted almost anywhere.

Warm Regards,

Michael White

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

When I asked the question I had forgotten about Walkers, Reebok etc. There's also the phenomenon of stadia being named after a chairman with a monstrous ego (Madejski, Kassam, etc), which is similarly preposterous.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as funny as Gooneria, admittedly, but 'Goonarena' might just work.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Goonarena isn't curable though.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Gillespie Road station was proposed for closure at the same time as the other closed Picadilly line stations - Down St, York Way,* etc - and was only saved because of its football traffic. They also considered turning it into a "match days only" station.

* Was the Picadilly station York Way or York Road? I can't find my copy of London's Disused Underground Stations right now

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. In the olden days, it was just a stand named after the egocentric Chairman. I wonder old style boys like Doug Ellis think it's a touch arriviste of the Kassam's and Madejskis

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

York Road, though the street is now called York Way.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

York Road

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

so livid. happened to come home at the same time as a match finished for the first time, and had to yell at three separate policemen to access my own fucking house. they wanted me to queue up with the football fans wtf!!!!! can't believe they had the fucking audacity to ask me to do that. so wasn't gonna happen. and then they refused to give me their names!

i may have called all the football fans cunts too. and when i was finally let through the barriers i may have deliberately kicked a few of the ruder ones. SO MUCH HATE.

Was the football stadium there when you moved Lex? If so, what did you expect to happen when 60,000 people go there every time there's a game?

I sympathise with your difficulties with the police, but on the whole I have very little sympathy for people who move next door to a football ground and then complain that it complicates life on match days. Like when the yuppies started to colonise Fulham in the 80s and tried to make the club move for fear it would lower property prices (until they all started going to the Cottage).

If you don't like football fans, stay away from football grounds. It's pretty easy. There are lots of streets in London that don't have a football ground next door.
