This is not about lacing weed with angel dust, BTW

It sounds like a good idea to dust plants, but I don't regularly dust anything.

I let my cats do that with their tails.

my insane aunt washes each leaf of her indoor plants with a mysterious homemade tonic. she then shines each leaf with a dollop of mayo. sounds wierd and gross, but her house looks like a shimmering jungle, smelling faintly of a deli.

Water misters wash the dust off ferny foliage. Alternatively you can put them outside in the rain from time to time.

Surely a lot of the "dust" on ferns is actually spores?

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 6 October 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it depends on the species. Spores are often contained in defined sporangia on the underside of leaf and/or protected by indusia (little caps) or an inrolled leaf margin.

I suspect that dusty looking spores on the leaf surface are 'ripe' and ready to be displaced by air, water, etc. so there is no harm washing them off. I would not get in there with the mayonaise though.

disclaimer - there are lots of ferns and I don't really know much about any of them.
