UK Cable channels worth paying extra for?

AKA what are your favourite satellite/cable channels?

I want to get NASN (North American Sports Network) but I only want it for the baseball which, of course, is going to be stopping soon for the winter.

But what else should I be considering?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just cancelled all of my NTL services so it's back to good old 4 1/2 channels!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you do without Discovery Home & Leisure and Extreme Fishing?

(I'm serious btw)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They are all rubbish except BBC News 24, which isn't as good as the radio anyway.

That is the considered opinion of someone impatiently waiting for their year's minimum contract to run out.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I have no choice, they've been trying to sort out an issue with my phone (the fact that it isn't working) since I moved in. Each time I have to chase them to sort it & each time despite their assurances that it's fixed, it never is. The engineer never bothers to show up, so that has culminated in me cancelling everything. I will miss all of those extra channels. :-(

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

E4's good for allowing you to watch the Sopranos a week before your mates. UK History isn't bad. Sky One's generally shit, but they'll occasionally get a good import. Other than that...

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

plenty of baseball on channel 5. just set your video recorder to record the X Games... (grrr, 2nd week running)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and BBC4 is quite good.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever you do avoid film four, total fucking rip off. They buy like a film every two months and then run, and run, and run it again. They claim to be (seriouse about film) but as i recall did their best to drum up an audiance for Rancid Aluminium by extolling its non existant merits. Turner clasics or whatever that you get for free is far superior, constantly suprising and actually a good alternative to the video shop, cos they show loads of stuff you cant find anywhere (something film four never does). If you can, get Sky, cos then you will get shanel U. Grime videos by groups that are genuinly underground all day (the chanel itself funds the video's production) and filthy hip hop videos and soft porn all night. It is the greatest thing ever.

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Film Four used to be good. It's sad.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked BBC4, E4, all of the dicovery channels & the history channels. Oh & of course the porn, but you have to pay for those separately apparently.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone remember when Bravo used to be good, about five years ago? Hard to belive now.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

'Good' in what sense?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It used to show lots of cult horror films and stuff like that. Now it's just like Men and Motors, only with less porn.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but the monster truck documentarys are enough to satisfy anyone!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It was definitely like Men & Motors when I first had it in 1998. Maybe I just ignored the cult horror.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It might have been a bit earlier than that I'm think of, actually. Anyway, at some point in the past it was quite a good channel.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember when bravo used to show the avengers and randall and hopkirk all day (= good)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure which ones come free - I have a full package, all the sports and movies and stuff. Sky One has Simpsons, Buffy reruns and some other good things here and there. Hallmark shows Homicide reruns. SF occasionally shows really interesting films you won't see elsewhere, including a couple of Miikes. Toonami has great Justice League cartoons. Sky Sports has loads of top football, plus WWE. British Eurosport very occasionally runs sumo.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why I find that last sentence so funny.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bid up TV. Legendary stuff for filling advert breaks.

___ (___), Friday, 8 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

UK Food network. I can sit for hours infront of that!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i like having all the music video channels because increasing the quantity DOES increase the chances of at least one of them playing something tolerable at any one time - tho often this is still not the case.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I only ever tend to watch MTV2 & MTV base as pretty much all of the other channels are rubbish!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of like 'The Vault' since it has no annoying VJs, although it seems like they play a lot of C+C music factory. Then again, some will consider that an advantage.

sgs (sgs), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like The Amp and Smash Hits TV.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, the Amp do play stuff like the Stone Roses quite alot.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh whoopee.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not why I watch it. They only ever play Fools Gold anyway. They are currently playing The Ordinary Boys, so I'm not selling this terribly well.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ordinary Boys are the most "truth in advertising" bandname yet!

Whenever they play, I expect Hilton Betelgeuse to pop up and start hecking "ORDINARY, ORDINARY, ORDINARY!!!" and storm out in a huff.

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I like them & it suits my taste in music, but then I rarely watch it anyway.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ordinary boys last single = family cat
ordinary boys current single = shed 7

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 8 October 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ordinary Boys are the most "truth in advertising" bandname yet!

Totally OTM, Kate. I can't imagine anyone liking them for any reason. What worries me is that they are exactly the kind of band I'd have liked 10 years ago (see also, er, them what Carsmile Steve said up there), but I really just don't see the point of such a meh kind of band.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

What, no love for MTV Base?

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ahem!!
I only ever tend to watch MTV2 & MTV base as pretty much all of the other channels are rubbish!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

mtv2 and mtvbase are rubbish most of the time as well it seems, hence my mv roulette game whenever i get the opportunity

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

MTV's absolute toss apart from Cribs.

They show Popworld on MTV Hits now. That's a good thing.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the late night hip hop show on MTV2 is pretty good.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cribs are on MTV now?

::shoots self::

This really is turning into Sk8tr Boi now, isn't it?

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 8 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

eight years pass...

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:46 (twelve years ago)

somebody just said, "cut the crap, Janet!"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:47 (twelve years ago)

getting a vaguely christian vibe from this sked:

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

my mums been watching those movies all day. She regularly watches film on that channel.

..it would have sounded about as heavy as Talulah Gosh. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

It is a seriously spooky channel. I realise it's nothing more than the Venn diagram of "appropriate for all ages" and "cheap syndication rights" but still.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

i think little house on the prairie and the waltons are shown on it the past year or so which is why my mum watches it.

..it would have sounded about as heavy as Talulah Gosh. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

are the movies the same vibe as Channel 5's afternoon movies? The ones that are always about how any faith you have in people is misplaced because they're all actually crazy stalker murderer types?

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

My ex-sister-in-law was obsessed with that True Movies channel, often neglecting her own children to watch shite which all seem to be called "For the sake of my children" or whatevs.
