so is this a silly notion borne out of the dems' insecurity/paranoia or an actual looming possibility? does it become more likely if kerry continues his ascent in the polls? what form do you think a 2004 o.s. would take?

At this point there would be too much potential for backfire (look at what happened in Spain). That said, Right now I'm pretty sure that Osama bin Laden looks like this:

German intelligence officials believe, as they have for some time, that bin Laden is living in the Afghan-Pakistani border area, Hanning said. He did not specify which side of the border.
....
Hanning also warned that violence in Iraq risks plunging the country into the chaos of a disintegrating "failed state" resembling terrorist havens like pre-Sept. 11 Afghanistan. U.S.-led airstrikes in Afghanistan ousted the Taliban in late 2001 for harboring bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

USA today with the big scoop.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So CBS and MSNBC totally got duped: the Admin brought them in for an special invite only "Foreign Policy" address, and it turned out to be a straight stump speech (of all the things Bush couldn't stutter out during the debate) in front of a room of rowdy party faithfuls. That's just dirty pool, man, they interrupted their regular programming because they were told it was a real policy speech. Nothing new was said at all, only tired repetition of campaign slogans.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a pretty lousy October surprise.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

scamming the media doesn't sound like the best campaign strategy right now.

"Reading from a prepared text, Bush chuckled to himself as he delivered his cutting new lines.

"He shook his head to convey disbelief as he read the charges against Kerry. Bush thumped an open palm against his lectern as he declared: "The world is better off with Saddam Hussein sitting in a prison cell."

"After reciting a laundry list of Kerry's criticisms on Iraq, Bush said: "You hear all that and you can understand why somebody would make a face." It was Bush's way of explaining his debate scowls and looks of annoyance.

"His friendly audience laughed, leaped to their feet and gave him a standing ovation, led, among others, by political aide Karl Rove, sitting in the third row.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

that's still pretty lousy. these guys are totally floundering.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I admit that if there is one thing I would love to see in this election, should the result go the way I want it, it would consist of being a fly on the wall wherever Rove is at for the following day after said election.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

am i the only one who thinks the floundering increases the potential for some sort of surprise move though? (xpost)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe the networks will run their own BREAKING NEWS: "Bush sucks!"

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not if Rove is having to appear at events as a cheerleader. (xpost)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

too bad there is no longer the "equal time" standard. then bush could not manipulate the press as well.

October Suprise: A snakelike being bursts from an eggsack in Rove's neck, and commands us all to line up for a feeding.

andy, Thursday, 7 October 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This may not qualify as a surprise, but it sure fits into the BushCo FUD strategy - don't be surprised if he see more and more of these kinds of warnings coming out:

AP: "The Education Department has advised school leaders nationwide to watch for people spying on their buildings or buses to help detect any possibility of terrorism like the deadly school siege in Russia. The warning follows an analysis by the FBI and the Homeland Security Department of the siege that killed nearly 340 people, many of them students, in the city of Beslan last month. 'The horror of this attack may have created significant anxiety in our own country among parents, students, faculty staff and other community members,' Deputy Education Secretary Eugene Hickok said in a letter to schools and education groups ... The Education Department sent its letter by e-mail Wednesday to school police, state school officers, school boards, groups representing principals and many other organizations."

How to Make an October Surprise:
Submitted by: B.Jennings
"My grandmother made this many years ago. My children love it. The cooked pumpkin around the 'shepherd's pie' is sweet and delicious! What a surprise when the lid of the pumpkin is lifted!" Original recipe yield: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS:
1 small pumpkin
6 potatoes - peeled and cubed
salt and pepper to taste
garlic powder to taste
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 (15 ounce) can cream-style corn
1 (15.25 ounce) can whole kernel corn

DIRECTIONS:
Cut a 4 inch circle off the top of the pumpkin, including the stem; set aside to be used later as a lid. Remove seeds and stringy insides of pumpkin. Place pumpkin in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain, and mash. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder; set aside.

In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no pink shows; drain. Spoon the ground beef into the pumpkin. Pour in the creamed corn and whole kernel corn. Top with mashed potatoes. Cover with pumpkin lid. Pour 2 cups of water in the baking dish.

Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until pumpkin is
tender and can be pierced with a fork.

That sounds pretty good, actually. It would be better with diced canned peppers.

I had dinner with my grandparents at Old Country Buffet the other night and they had the most hideous pumpkin-flavored pudding. It was really vile. But the pumpkin-flavored muffins that they have at Dunkin Donuts this month are pretty good.
