Unbelievable. At 33, some kind of massive asthma attack. I thought she was pretty fucking ace. I know Dastoor was something of a fan too.

Oh my God... absolutely shocking.

DavidM, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bloody hell. I can't believe it. I can't think of anything else to say. Utterly tragic.

Ally C, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's truly a shame.

steve dahlberg, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard it on the radio this morning and couldn't believe it. RIP Marmalade.

I'll miss her.

I'm afraid in America she was pretty much only known for Four Weddings, and I admit when I saw the obit I didn't immediately recognize who she was until I read further. But from the sound of it she was quite well known in the UK, and she was certainly good fun in said movie. Any specific recommendations of her other work to give?

bugger.

Unbelievable.

Ned: not much of a film career outside "Four Weddings..." (possibly because she couldn't be arsed - she always had a reputation for failing to network or chum up to the right people), but very fondly thought of in the UK for "Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit", in which, with the help of Geraldine McEwan and Kenneth Cranham, she managed to convince everyone that Jeanette Winterson was a good writer whose books should be sought out. No mean feat.

Also played opposite Dylan Moran in "How Do You Want Me?", an understated and underrated BBC2 sitcom - one of a kind, actually. And, yes, legions of Brits of a certain age will remember her best as 'the naughtiest schoolgirl in the world' in "Educating Marmalade" in the early 80s.

Same age as me. Fuck.

Same age as me too(a fellow asthmatic)- a fan from marmalade onwards.

Fuck.

She was wonderful in How Do You Want Me. Her inhaler was downstairs.

One of those sad events that makes you think, among other things, either that you hadn't paid the deceased enough mind, or that they themselves hadn't realized their potential. (In other words: it's peculiar when people who are *not*, or no longer, hugely *successful* die - something poignant lingers, a sense of what should have been.)

I seem to have forgotten this 'Marmalade' thing. It wasn't 'Educating Marmalade / was the worst mistake we ever made', was it? That rhyme has evidently never quite gone away.

As Steady Mike says, Oranges is the key here, really.

Highest-ever proportion of (strong) swearing by Steady M on one thread? That's a true register of Impact, I think.

Don't recognize her but the death by asthma attack really frightens me. ::wheeze::

Samantha, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I apologise unreservedly for the coarseness of my language on this thread.

Reynard: I can't remember "Educating Marmalade", but I have the tie- in book. I think you're right about the theme, somehow, even though I never saw it. Strange how easy and common it is to discover memories these days.
