Ah, but what if they had LIGHTED CANDLES in their beard, like Blackbeard, eh? Given that 2 of the most famous pirates were called "Blackbeard" and "Redbeard" (NB info from the Ladybird book of Pirates, which I have just got down from the bookshelf. A slim but informative tome) The likelyhood is that they would mostly have had beards. Apart from Mary Read & Ann Bonny of course.
Blackbeard aka Capt. Teach was a bad-ass motherfux0r. When they caught him, they shot him 25 times before he fell. (turns page) Furthermore, Captain Bonnet actually made people walk the plank. Looking at the frightening illustration, captioned "A prisoner walking the plank blindfold, with a jeering crowd of ruffianly pirates watching him" I conclude that pirates != cuddly. "Pirates" is also the name of a truly bloody awful Emerson Lake & Palmer track, featuring the GX-1 synthesiser also used on "Fanfare for the Common Man". So you see, it doesn't look good for pirates, does it?
xoxo
