Stop pretending you are a balloon and read this handy thread:

What goes wrong when trying to make friends...

Alba (Alba), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

be yourself?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1 cup olive oil
2 eggs, separated
1/2 cup milk
3 tbs. cinnamon
1 tsp. cilantro

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds pretty good, minus the cilantro.

Extracurricular activities! Or, if you're out of school, hobbies that involve other people... Do you want to play sports? Take a yoga class? Learn photography? Play in a band?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

6 overpaid actors, set it in New York, same jokes every week, coffee.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you play? Maybe you can borrow equipment?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You could be the singer?

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

If you play keyboards and live in the greater Chicago area, then...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I play sampler, voice, super simulated tape delay (w/ tone generators and pitch shifters), flute and effects.

It sounds like WHOOOSH

I think friends are a lie. Does anyone really have friends?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark E. Smith does, let him tell you about his frenz.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I opened up for a band that is opening for Bunnybrains and the Fall.

MAYBE PEOPLE WILL LET ME BE IN THEIR INDIE BANDS.

Does anyone really have friends?

I didn't hallucinate them all! (Maybe some.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My problem seems to be that I have trouble meeting people I share common interests with. Basically, I make all my friends by meeting friends of friends. This is not enough friends. Also, most of these people aren't people I hang out with, just people I chat up when I see them.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Just add water. It's my answer to everything.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What about TOOOWWWWNNNNIIIIEEESSS???

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, most of my coolest friends in college were townies.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I have lots of friends. They live in the crawl space. Sometimes at night they whisper things to me.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Met a girl thought she was cute, she had a boyfriend, she left him for me, I got creeped out, don't talk to her no more.

my ex girlfriend makes all her friends via CREEPY means. She goes up to people she thinks looks cool and leaves them a little note or just stalks them until they become friends with her. I think this is only cute and charming if you are a girl who has Belle and Sebastian mugs though.

I make friends with bartenders. At least you can get free drinks then, if nothing else.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

there aren't any friends in rochester.

caitlin hell (caitxa), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I got all my Bay Area friends from ILX!

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

one word:
Friendster

lemin (lemin), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You could become a bartender - people take Jeffs advice and make friends with you thinking they are going to get free drinks.

four years pass...

By the way, I'm so freaked out by this idea. I'm finishing up college at the moment and then faced with the prospect of moving home and basically having no friends there anymore. I went to see I Love You, Man last night but I spent the whole movie actually considering how the things Paul Rudd does to make friends can be applied to my real life situations. : (

Not trying to be "shocker, guy from internet is socially awkward", but like, how the fuck do you make friends? Its easy when you start college, everyone is in the same position and everyone is looking for new friends, but dive bombing into a pre-existing network of friends and relationships is actually never something that I've had to deal with. In short, I've never actively had to find friends and I just don't really get how people find friends. My school friends kinda grew into an impregnable clique in my absence, and one guy who I always got on really badly is kinda the alpha male in that gang and has in the past gone out of his way to make me feel really awkward and, well, they've all been hanging out for five years that I wasn't there so I'd pretty much just be a newcomer at this stage.

One of the problems of going to a school that was almost entirely girls as well meant that pretty much all my friends here are girls now, and I don't really know how to talk to other guys really anymore, in that I am just more intimidated by guys in general as a social group, largely because with girls I always kinda feel like I'm never gonna be real member of the group anyway so the pressure's off, but with other guys the idea of not really fitting in anywhere freaks me out a bit more. Just so we're clear, I'm not a social tard, and I can still have a conversation, even if four years of immersion in a social scene entirely populated with "art people" has somewhat stunted my abilities in what exactly constitutes standard shooting the breeze subject matter.

Also, how important is like texting or ringing your friends in terms of keeping in touch. And where do you meet them in the first place, I don't really feel like its possible to go to a bar alone and attach yourself to a group of people and just hang out with them, like that.

Really, how do you make friends, I am confused.

Rule 1: Ignore any advice I give you on this subject.
