I've been there! I was quite surprised - I arrived in New York before I back-packed a bit in the US, and was wondering along and found a random Gandhi statue. I was impressed.

i've never quite understood why there's a Ghandi statue on Union Square (Ghandi's walking North from University Place...possibly on his was to Diesel Jeans or Staple's ["loin clothes? Yeah, we got those!"]). But his little plot is very lovingly looked after, and pilgrims do drop by and drape garlands around his neck. It's quite nice, actually.

Houston, Washington DC, Milwaukee, Chicago, Salt Lake City, St Louis and Atlanta also have Gandhi statues. I think they are usually in connection with Martin Luther King, because of Gandhi's influence. As far as I know, though, Gandhi never visited the US (well, he was shot in 1948 - it still wasn't that easy to travel); if he had visited the statues might make more sense. The one in New York is lovely though, Alex, you're right.
