What use is a panda?

I find it mind boggling that in this era of virtually untreatable diseases ( Sars/HIV - the Chinese should know about them ) and poverty on a global scale, that various governments would spend millions of their respective currency ( mainly US Dollars and Chinese Yuan ) on shipping pandas all over the world to fail to mate, have IVF, then live in heated wooden huts ( pandas have a lot of them naturally in the wild of course ). Now admittedly this idea of wasting money can be, and frequently is, applied to various other subjects such as space travel and weapons - and I'm not going to try to defend or attack them. But I'm sure we could all agree that national security is important and space travel does hold some pretty interesting possibilities. But saving the pandas? Where does that get us? Are we grinding down panda bones to make a cancer cure? Are they immune to Sars type viruses? What use is a panda?

Hi LPD,

Did these panda creatures slash your tires? If so, lemme know and they will pay dearly for their mistake.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

"Panda". Even the name sounds like the very embodiment of evil.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I really want JW and this guy to talk this out. Like, with huge images and animated gifs and stuff.

Utility is not a reason for preserving animal species (or rather, lack of utility is not a reason for allowing them to die) - biodiversity is a good in itself. That said, I've never particularly liked pandas, as they look fake. Not a reason to let them die though.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

What use is a hippo, but to flip out and kill people? People should look into this.

surely we need a reason to preserve and maintain them (at great expense) rather than a reason not to? Anyway why should we look after a species that won't even fuck for its own survival.

you know before I thought we should spend ALL our money on saving them. but you've changed my mind. Let's slice the furry bastards up.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't know - people seem to like helping pandas, and an entire species is an important scientific resource. Also, it's not really the case that pandas are just too lazy to have sex - the destruction of the bamboo forests have had a huge impact on a species that needs a lot of space in order to reproduce*.

*I might be making this up - it sounds right, but I know absolutely nothing about pandas.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Yes, for their enormous waterbeds.

It's ILX slang for "oh god, some newcomer with a lame website to spam has turned up and is repeating himself ad nauseam on mulitple threads while trying to seem like hey, I'm just one of the guys".

(and I agree with you about pandas, but just go now, okay?)

apparently rather than being a strange offshoot of the bear family, it is actually the case that bears evolved away from pandas, making pandas the senior bear.

NAKH!

I spent a longer time than I should admit to watching the San Diego Zoo pandacam yesterday. Mostly she was just hanging out, munching on some bamboo but I think that's generally (with the exception of crazy panda in that vid) what they, you know, do.

Not on cam right now tho. Sad.

According to keepers, the giant pandas did not appear to respond to the earthquake.

the physical impossibility of sb in the mind of someone fping (silby), Monday, 17 September 2012 17:16 (twelve years ago)

“I’ve been crying all day,” said Holly O’Brien-Yao, 58, of Falls Church, as she stood outside the roped-off panda compound.

Tears of joy? “Of course,” she said.

“I’ve been praying for something really wonderful to happen to me, and this does it,” she said.

“I remember doing it with Tai Shan and how beautiful it was,” she said. “It makes me feel better. It’s a warm and fuzzy feeling. . . . I’ve needed this for so long.”

thank you based panda
