Setting up a mail server on a Mac

Many questions -

Can I run this on a laptop? One that isn't necessarily online all the time? What programs do I need, and what exactly should I know going into this?

Basically, my situation is that I have an extra webdomain that I'd like to try using purely (at the moment) for email, without having to bother with any third-party hosting. I am, however, admittedly very much a newb to these things, and only have passing familiarity with the higher-end of this.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, I'm connected via a dynamic IP DSL connection. How does that change things?

If you want the MX records pointing directly at your laptop then you'll need to use some sort of dynamic DNS server to host your domain name.

Yeah actually using DSL with DHCP it's quite unlikely your mail will get anywhere, that's like spammer tactic #1. Most service providers now don't let anything go outbound on port 25 unless it's coming from their own server.

Yup. I run Sendmail at home, but set to forward all outgoing mail directly to my ISP's SMTP server. My ISP doesn't block port 25 outbound, but a number of other ISPs block all incoming mail from address blocks they have listed as DHCP.

i think the biggest problem is going to be running the mailserver accepting mail on a laptop. I mean, you're not going to be on the same ip 24/7/365

Yeah, it seems like this idea is more trouble that it's worth. Oh well. A chance to challenge myself and learn some new skills denied for now. Something else'll come along.

You could try pimping.
