Film: Dud. Novelization therof: classic.

What little I remember of them is bound up inextricably with other dubious kids' features of the seventies like _Freaky Friday_ and those Witch Mountain movies. Though I might give a slight bit of credit to _Candleshoe_.

Hey. My baseball team is just like them, especially Vanessa and her screaming whenever the ball goes near her, or me diving from a thrown ball (and I'm the catcher). Don't dog us, damnit.

How about when they went to the Astrodome and faked the kid out on first base by concealing the ball--that was actually a legal play back then?

LET THEM PLAY!! LET THEM PLAY!!!! :)

The TV show introduced the euphimism "dinkus".

Joe: It's a legal play NOW. Throw to 1st base to keep the runner honest, pretend to throw back to the pitcher, wait for the runner to get off 1st base, and tag his stupid ass out. (Or her - let us not discriminate.)

Of course, I never saw the film(s), so they're probably breaking all sorts of rules.

That play happened a few months ago in an Astros game

What was their theme again? Some classicla piece. Did anyone ever see Steve SAx pull down his pants during a televised game?

Classic. The Bad News Bears influenced EVERYTHING that followed. From the kids' sports angle (hello, The Sandlot!?) to the pseudo-father figure/daughter relationship between Walter Matthau and Tatum O' Neal (dude, it's so Leon -- Luc Besson can't fool us).

It has Tatum O'Neal's second-best performance after Paper Moon, and doesn't your heart just go after poor Lupus? Besides, what red- blooded American kid growing up in the late '70s and '80s didn't dream of playing at the Astrodome? I know I did. I had one where I hit a gapper off of Joe Niekro.

Regret to say I haven't seen the closing chapter of the trilogy, The Bad News Bears Go to Japan. Has anyone seen it? Tony Curtis is in it.

Regarding the concealed ball trick: It's been eight years since I stood on a mound, but I don't believe its legal to fake the stretch position -- with a foot touching the rubber -- without the ball.

For the first baseman faking a toss back to the pitcher and tagging the runner after he's stepped off the base, I believe that's always been okay. Just as long as the pitcher isn't on the mound in the ready position.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Watched this with my son and choked up. A near-perfect movie. But a lot of ethnic slurs you wouldn't find in a kids' picture today.

Classic. Never seen any of the sequels (though I did see Linklater's useless remake), but there's a book in the awesome Deep Focus series on ...Breaking Training.
