ridiculous people

so as the result of a completely random u-turn i ended up going out with a totally different group of people last night and they ended up being the most obnoxious, ridiculous people ever, the kind of assholes that you spend your whole adolescent life cultivating an extrasensory instinct to avoid and now more or less forget exist until they're sitting in front of you saying one ridiculous thing after another and you're confronted with the crushing reality check that this is what most of the actual world is probably like.

i guess they were hipsters? diagonal haircuts and pinstripes and suit jackets (i had one on too, never felt like a bigger retard) and all that, but really that was nothing compared to the completely ridiculous things they were saying. there was a married couple in the group, and everybody else had been host to their four year old's birthday party earlier in the day so these ridiculous people are sitting there goofing on the FOUR YEAR OLDS who attended the party (they collectively dubbed one of them "that really ugly girl") and then the intergalactic champion of ridiculousness declares "i'd rather spend six months in afghanistan or be a homeless garbage-eater than run a daycare." it's at that point that i feel an overwhelming disgust for basically all of humanity, especially ben sherman and franz ferdinand.

i was hoping i'd have a question at the end of all this but really i just needed to vent. i've filed the thread under "abject stupidity." feel free to take this opportunity to talk about ridiculous people you have known and mentally throttled, or about franz ferdinand, or about whether i am old yet.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

being catty about children is the most ridiculous thing i can imagine.

i was watching blind date tonight and one of the female contestants was complaining (actually complaining, mind you) that the guy she was on the date with was more interested in her nursing career than her breasts. she also said "and his vocabulary... what the fuck was THAT all about? i never heard of ANY of those words!"

blind date and elimidate rule so hard.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

for reals

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 October 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

my favourite moment from elimidate was this really nasty skinny girl who, when kicked out, bitterly proclaimed "this booty is ghetto fabulous!"

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dial-a-Date was the king of dating shows.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 11 October 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Are pinstripes and suitjackets all trendy now? OK, now I feel vindicated in my veto.

Anyway... jebus! Some people never leave high school behind, but not being able to leave PRESCHOOL behind, that's a bit sick.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i was quite critical of a small child yesterday (he was making growling noises and thumping the side of the train for much of the journey while his mother ignored his curious feral tendencies). i can assure you i am no hipster tho.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear, I've dissed kids before too....

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think i've ever dissed a kid before, i laughed at them being dumbasses before. i've dissed parents of bad kids, a lot, though.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I never given a kid jip behind it's back. Poor thing!

Mark, I feel for ya.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I briefly turned into a complete prick last night by rubbishing orthodox jewish custom (the wife has to wear a fucking wig???) but luckily I had a sensitive, intelligent girlfriend to point out what a cunt I was being.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"a fucking wig" ugh

ken c (ken c), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

JEWISH PEOPLE HAVE TO WEAR MERKINS?!?!? OMG, WTF?!??!

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you slag the kid to it's face Johnney???? Now that's sick!

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:35 (twenty-one years ago)

A kid's gotta learn sometime!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"it's face" ugh (and even if it's "its face" it's ugh)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm jewish (non-practicing) and i think some of the orthodox customs are a bit ridiculous and outdated. but jews are very protective of their heritage and considering what they've been through they have every right to be.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

My neighbours are orthodox jews and they're lovely people.

Core of Sphagnum (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

In retrospect, I'm not sure where I was going with that.

Core of Sphagnum (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think the right should come from considering what they've been through.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not like they're militant about it. they're content to do their own thing.

Germany's Fun-Loving Beer (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

how did you ditch them?

kephm, Monday, 11 October 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not what i meant

ken c (ken c), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone see that documentary on purim last night? it looked so much fun - the salford orthodox family depicted were hilariously witty. i laughed so hard i blew the contents of an ashtray all over my face...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I want "salford orthodox" to be a bizarre and obscure offshoot of judaism. i bet it isn't, though.
