is the reason why i love this show b/c it reminds me of peyton place and i can wank over the gardner ?

anthony, Monday, 11 October 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wifey's sister plays Terri Hatcher's daughter on the show so I'm forced to watch

but yeah it's pretty good despite the obvious Sex & The City meets Six Feet Under, err, 'theme'

Well, it made ILX - I guess I can call my in-laws and tell them the show is officially a hit! Honestly, Andrea is a great kid and i'm glad the show is a success.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 11 October 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the best things about the show is the continued narration by the suicide. it is a great touch and has worked in the past for shows like Wonder Years and countless movies. can't wait to see what the secret is!

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty soapy and campy, that's probably why I got a kick out of it. Plus, I have a bad feeling Marcia Cross will end up playing me in a movie one day.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I turned it on for gratuitous Terri Hatcher adultery, I stayed for the stealth roffles.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Between this show and LOST, ABC has almost made a believer out of me.

I WANT SEE LOST NOW

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i know, but such a network should really consider cancelling "America's Funniest Home Videos" sometime this century. Bob Saget even gave it up.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, x-post w/nick

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"desperate Housewives" is a bit campy, but as I found out the other night, "Lost" is so melodramatic you can follow the plot with the sound off. "DH" is not HBO (it's TV), but it's quite well done.

I'm amazed at ABC this season. Suddenly I'm watching it again! "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," and even reality shows like "Extreme Home Makeover" (house porn!) and especially "Wife Swap" have totally won me over.

A word about "Wife Swap" -- it's the cruelest, most revealing and fascinating reality show yet. It's subject is not so much wives as conflicting American values, and it damn near addresses the issue of social class. Compare to "The Bachelor," which pitts a bunch of women who all have the same fucked-up values against one another. Very dull. "Wife Swap" pitts vegetarians against meat eaters, Southerners against Yankees, the rich and spoiled against the modest and hard-working, the arrogant against the meek. Genius.

This show is really really dull and poorly scripted. Nothing good is going on in it. Now Wildside that's a TV show.

Nellie (nellskies), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

I saw most of about 5 episodes. While it's not totally worthless, I am unsurprised that it was created by a gay Republican.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

The Spy made me watch it. It wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined. Meaning, well, it was bad, but good-bad, not evil. Or, erm, something. Enjoyable trash.

The Phantom of the Operating System (kate), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I liked the part where Terri Hatcher was singing "New York, New York" and started yelling at her ex-husband.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I love Terri Hatcher. I love the show. Totally addicted.

this show is great trash crack wonderful tv. also good in that same way but not as good: las vegas.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

I never got really got going with this show.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

It's petering out for me. Like I said upthread, I'm somewhat obligated to watch, and in the beginning, it was a guilty pleasue, Melrose Place kinda thing, and while I can't say I looked FORWARD to watching it, I didn't mind so much because it held my attention. Now i find it kinda dull, and i'm SO sick of Teri Hatcher's 'ditz' routine.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Did you see her on the Golden Globes? I'm not so sure it's a routine.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

It's all about Bree for me. She's totally my hero.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Teri Hatcher's thighs are becoming as dangerously thin as Mischa Barton's shoulders. This is not a good thing. Plus, in those promo posters all over London, she looks like she's in drag.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 00:20 (twenty years ago)

Bree VAN DER KAMP!!!!! best name ever.

This show is best watched en masse, with wine.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

i'm afraid they won't know what to do once they solve the body in the box mystery and it will totally fizzle out or get ridiculous.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know Desperate Housewives was on here. Maybe it's because I was watching the tennis and missed the occasional tiny ad.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm afraid they won't know what to do once they solve the body in the box mystery and it will totally fizzle out or get ridiculous.

dude it's totally ridiculous already: they spend 95% of the time engaging in camp bitchery, then five minytes before the credits roll it's all like WAIT! THERE'S A BODY IN THE BOX MYSTERY TOO!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

yeah I know, but if they drag that out too long will the viewers get upset? I guess not since the bitchiness is the bigger attraction anyway. This is exactly what Lynch wanted to do with Twin Peaks but there was so much attention on the Laura Palmer storyline they weren't allowed to leave it alone.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

it's the kind of thing they could easily resolve with a new mystery - it can't go on forever, but neither does it have to be neatly tied up any time soon.

i like it. it reminds me a bit of Eerie, Indiana

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

I kinda sorta don't get this! I should maybe watch it again, sometime, to try.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

It's not really worth the time to get.

Leon Jones Reynolds (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I watched the first few episodes and got bored. I think I'd watch if there were more plotlines about the teenagers/kids, if they were actual characters. (But that just speaks to my O.C./Gilmore Girls/Degrassi love. And my non-love for petty suburban women, I'm sorry, tv industry, I'm just not in the mood.)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

a fan of the o.c. shouldn't throw stones, i realize, but i don't see why people love this show.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I feel the same about the OC though Lauren! Maybe ours is not to reason why, or something!?!?!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

The network aired an hour-long "catch-up" episode, so now I'm sort of clued in. It's an okay show. I like that it's a little creepy.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

it reminds me a bit of Eerie, Indiana

Yes, me too!

I like that the majority of the super-creepiness has been quarantined to one particular household. Except for pharmacist/stalker guy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

it's gotten way less creepy and way more soapy and consequently way less interesting. they gave away the mystery in a really anticlimactic fashion and they kind of fucked something up about it too, but I'm not sure what, exactly. I think the show has become too popular too quickly and as a result they got really lazy and fell back on gross caricatures rather than telling a good story. It's alright but not as good as I was hoping it would be.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

wow the finale was completely underwhelming and dull

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

It was the first time I had seen this show, I didn't get the appeal at all. Granted I had no investment/knowledge in any of the characters, but that final voiceover was excruciating.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

that's in every episode so you'd probably hate it.

there were just now surprises in this except for Rex dying.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

I agree. Totally anti-climactic.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

I like Felicity Huffman, though.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

OTM about that voiceover. "Desperate..." Oh, so very desperate. Desperate to make some kind of point, I guess. Silliness.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Wo - what happens to Rex? I don't think we've reached the finale here - we may have and I've just not been paying attention. I watched about three episodes.

Rumpy Pumpkin, Monday, 23 May 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

the same thing that happened to him when he was on Enterprise

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

He dies. The doctor discovers huge amounts of potassium in his blood, which is making him sick, and concludes that he must be ingesting it. Of course we know that it's the evil pharmacist's bad pills that are killing him, but he and the doctor jump to the conclusion that it's Bree feeding him deadly stuff on purpose. Cut away, then later cut to Bree getting the phone call that he's died, before he even went into surgery. Did he die of a broken heart? Hm...

Poor Bree.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Cool, I look forward to that.

What about the teenage boy (the creepy one)? I suspect he goes on some wild shoot 'em up killing spree....?

Rumpie, Monday, 23 May 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Not really. He's a pussy, you gotta know.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Does he do anything extreme?

Rumpie, Monday, 23 May 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Why on earth did I just read that HUGE SPOILER when I'm going to watch the finale tonight?

Thanks for the HUGE SPOILER warning, AMERICANS. Sheesh.

Just for that, you should all know that in the next episode, Anakin (Darth) is going to torture his own daughter. So there.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Posh: "I'm a Desperate Housewife"
Sunday, February 26 2006, 10:39 GMT -- by Daniel Kilkelly

Victoria Beckham has announced that she is no longer interested in fame.

The former Spice Girl confessed that she now feels like the real-life version of Lynette Scavo on US hit show Desperate Housewives.

"The fact is, I'm getting older. I'm 31, my children are my priority," she told the Sunday Mirror. "I'm just not interested in fame any more. The truth is, I see myself as one of the characters from the series Desperate Housewives - the one who has the most kids. All day with the kids, up and down, trying to cook and clean.

"I'm never going to sing again, unless it was a chance to do something with the Spice Girls. I don't really miss the shows we did together. I miss the girls more. I see Geri a lot - I love her, she's amazing. I speak to the others from time to time. I love them too and I miss them."

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Sunday, 26 February 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

The lack of posts to this thread could indicate that people wised up and realized that this show is thin and inconsistent. Not a comedy, not a drama, not a soap. Only people with hmmmmmmm.... limited taste and intellectual capacity could possible enjoy it.

BHerbert, Sunday, 26 February 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

carlos is the only consistently good thing about this show. his character is terribly backed into a corner, and ew now he's going to get his sight back? they're giving up.
dave provides some serious serious cognitive dissonance though. like him. hope he's not one of the usual "cause a scandal for a season and then die/move away" characters this show always comes up with.

My husband loves the show (he's currently on a bit of a binge watch). Lotsa gays seem to love this show. I kinda dig it when its pulpy, and kinda hate it when it goes for pathos. Cross is pretty fantastic. Huffman is too, but being most familiar with her from Sports Night, there is the occasional moment where you can catch her playing beneath intelligence. The guy who plays Hatcher's main love interest is awful--any time the show shifts focus to Hatcher, it pretty much grinds to a dead halt, in fact.

Basically Morbs completely OTM upthread a decade ago with "While it's not totally worthless, I am unsurprised that it was created by a gay Republican."
