Which stars of Hollywood's golden age are still alive?

They mostly seem to have died, these last few years. It makes me sad. You'd think more of them would live longer, with all their money.

Who is left? Over, say, 75 years old?

Lauren Bacall is 80.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Shirley Temple.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

lukey (Lukey G), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Tony Curtis must be about 80.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes - Tony Curtis. Forgot about him. He's a good one, and looks wonderfully bizarre these days. He's 79.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Kirk Douglas. Still alive, still working, still Spartacus.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Mickey Rooney - 84.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

clark gable

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Gosh - I've not heard of him for a while. How's he doing?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

he says "I'm okay, thanks. you?".

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

How old Clark Gable?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

103

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I fell for your ridiculous Clark Gable lie.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we all make up ridiculous Clark Gable lies and see which ones get believed?

Clark Gable almost joined the US astronaut programme, incidentally, but he failed the medical due to overly-large hands.

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you are thinking of his monkees audition.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Clark Gable's large ears allowed him to fly.

Well, not really fly, it was more of a clumsy gliding motion, but it made an amusing party trick.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Bugs Bunny was based on Gable's role in 'It Happened One Night'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Humph.

Jane Russell is 83.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlton Heston must be around the 80 mark.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, and Ruth Hussey are all still alive.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

A real Clark Gable story is that he once came over to Esther Williams when she was doing a screen test, told her that he really admired her, looked deep into her eyes and asked her for a kiss. She nearly fainted, and happily complied.

Then he stood up, shouted across to Carole Lombard "hey! I just kissed a mermaid!" and went off on his happy, glamorous way. Esther Williams felt a bit stupid.

Isn't Esther Williams still alive too?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never heard of Olivia de Havilland or Ruth Hussey. I'm not proud of this.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

You've never heard of Olivia de Havilland???

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I've not heard of Ruth Hussey. Olivia de Havilland was Marion to Errol Flynn's Robin.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry! I'm pretty crap on knowing actors' names generally, esp. old ones. I wouldn't even be able to point to Joan Fontaine or Esther Williams in a photo.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a very good song featuring Ruth Hussey. It might even have been written by an ilxor.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought she had died.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Celeste Holm is still alive.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought she had died.

They say, that.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Celeste Holm rules.

I wouldn't even be able to point to Joan Fontaine or Esther Williams in a photo.

Esther Williams always had a swimsuit on.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

How about Sofia Loren, or is she a bit later than the golden age?

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

She kissed my mum's friend's partner last month.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 March 2018 16:07 (seven years ago)

I missed the story that we found out only last year that Doris Day is two years older than everyone thought, including Doris herself. It used to be pointed out that she was born on the exact day as Marlon Brando; now she's two years older than him.

Josefa, Friday, 2 March 2018 17:02 (seven years ago)

But I wonder how that works, she was singing in a big band when she was 17... did she think she was 15?

Josefa, Friday, 2 March 2018 17:21 (seven years ago)

hadn't heard either
