this is the thread where we log out and talk about pirating software

Logging out optional, of course, but I did. I haven't done this in two years. Last time I downloaded illegal software, I was using Kazaa. Something tells me that's not the place to go anymore.

So tell me, where would *you* go if you wanted, say, Photoshop CS?

suprnova.org, although I hear it won't be around much longer.

dooby doo (JimD), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll need a bittorrent client too. I like www.bitcomet.com

dooby doo (JimD), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Torrents are the best way. Use PeerGuardian or Protowall, which afford you some protection against IP loggers. Although bittorrent is totally insecure, the risk isn't as high as a lot of people would have you believe. Usually the worst that will happen (and even this is rare) is that the software company sends your internet provider a nasty letter, and then your provider tells you not to use bittorrent like that anymore. FBI raids and stuff are (as far as I know) targeted solely at the people that crack the software to begin with.

Does anyone know whether lawsuits are being pursued for anything other than music sharing? I know letters are sent for movies and software, but have there been any lawsuits or arrests for those (other than of the groups that crack stuff)?

Mmmm... torrent-y.

Bitcomet is the best torrent software I've used -- good tip. And PeerGuardian gives me just the security I need to rip off all manner of software companies. You guys are the best.

I've never been able to get BitTorrent to work worth a damn, I guess because I connect through a router. (and when I tried the port routing thing or whatever that's called, it slowed down my connection completely)

Carracho (I think that's what it's called) used to be a decent file-sharing setup for Macs. You log into individual servers and download.

'someone I know' got CS and Final Draft off of LimeWire.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone I know also got CS off of Limewire. This person tells me that it works great -- a real trouble-free crack.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not a nice way to describe your friend!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

were any of you into that whole 'warez' scene on BBS and FTP sites?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed that whole thing. It was mostly games, anyway -- I mean, it's all mostly games, even now, and on into forever. But I didn't start downloading illegal things until I started needing thousand-dollar software packages.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Has someone really got a working CS? Games where you go online are usually a real bitch to get working when they're cracked. And Steam is notorious for not being accessible. I actually have a legal copy of Half-Life, but it was already used by a friend of mine. He registered the thing under an email account he no longer has access to, and he can't remember the password he used, so now I can't use the copy to play CS or TFC or anything anyway without sending those fuckers $10 to "process" things and fix the problem.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

CS = Adobe Photoshop CS.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

who cares about half-life when there's a new leisure suit larry!

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, ha.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

At least, that's what I meant. I can't speak for Milo.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I have Half-Life on the brain these days. After seeing all those in-game videos I'm geeked in the most literal sense.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

razor 1911, the humble guys, tdu-jam, prestige, hybrid. thats who i downloaded all my games from! haha, cant believe i remember the names of all those game cracker groups. such a geek.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I know Razor 1911 got busted, and I think hybrid did too.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 15 October 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

How many modern musicians owe there careers to music warez groups like Radius and Arctic?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton John for one.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He's no modern, Matt, where's the beats?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

All right then, Whitney Houston.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 15 October 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I know someone who has recently aquired:

adobe audition
adobe photoshop CS
adobe illustrator 10
adobe premiere

all via slsk

all cracked

all working

papa november (papa november), Friday, 15 October 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The thing is, in honesty, who doesn't use cracked software?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 15 October 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

er, me. sorry.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 15 October 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

certainly not indie labels/musicians.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 15 October 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i would generally prefer not to use cracked software when i can... i usually find whatever excuse i can to make it seem relevant to work so they'll buy it for me... i am currently having trouble convincing them of after effects and can't think of any reason for final draft... i have serious troubles locating pirated software for the mac. any advice?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 15 October 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Buy a PC. Roll in free software forevermore.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, I wouldn't use cracked software if it cost $100 to buy the real thing. But $700? $1000? Get the fuck outta here!

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

have a pc... need both, actually.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Friday, 15 October 2004 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)
