Has anyone else seen this? Its done by the same guy who did _Pumping Iron_, about Ahnuld. The film uses John Kerry's experience in Vietnam as a focal point, but is much more about the alienation that returning vets got by going off to a different war that they'd thought it'd be, and coming home to a different America. The main part of the film covers Kerry's work with the Vietnam Vets Against the War, and their march in Washington DC.

there is some POWERFUL footage in here, showing young guys who were torn the fuck up by what they went thru. You also see footage of Kerry talking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, going on Dick Cavette, CBS News, etc.

...oh yeah, and that Swift Boat Asshole for Truth, John Oneil, shows up in the end. it's fun to hear the Oval Office tape of Nixon & Nixon's underling discussing him.

apparently, they rushed the editing of it to get it out before the election, but it's not really a campaign film.

they had the tape of Nixon & Hadelman discussing O'Neil and Kerry on PBS's Frontline last night. Pretty amazing stuff.

I wrote about it for the paper. There is some amazing stuff in it--the film makes clearer than anything else I've seen how brutal Kerry's war experiences must have been, and the Winter Solider footage is still just jaw-dropping. At the same time, it's a total propaganda blowjob. There's no documentary/journalistic rigor, few details on key stuff, not nearly enough back-up on some other things (FBI harrassment of VVAW, for example). So while it makes Kerry seem almost preternaturally admirable, I doubt it's gonna do much for anyone who's not already on the boat, as it were.

true, but they had that great memo about hitting Kerry hard "before he turns into another Ralph Nader."

is "going upriver" the new homosexualist euphemism du jour?

the first half of this movie is totally embarrassing, a total campaign commercial and poorly-done. but it does get more absorbing
