When you see a predator stalking its prey on a wildlife documentary, who do you root for?

I'm always on the predator's side. Does this make me bad?

(Cue jokes about Predator ships)

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too. I can relate to being really hungry more than running away from things with big teeth.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! That's probably it.

One of my favoritest things in the whole world to do back in 1995 when I first got high was to watch predator & prey shows on Animal Planet with the sound off and Beastie Boys' "Gratitude" playing on repeat.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

And by "one of my favoritest things" I actually mean I did it like twice and laughed my ass off, natch.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

When I used to get high in 1994, my stoner roommate and I (he probably refers to me as his stoner roommate) used to watch animal shows with the sound off, mostly with Dinosaur Jr and Pavement playing though.

Huk-L, Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it depends on who the show is about. if it's following a pride of lions through their daily life and they eat some gazelles then i am on the side of the lions. but if it's a doco about some gazelles and one of them dies well then i'm totally pro-gazelle.

Anthony (Plato Guy), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i like it when a loner leopard jumps out of a tree and thrashes the hell out of something, and the camera gets up close on their kitten faces covered with blood

kephm (kephm), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This is inconceivable to me! I am always a prey-rooter, always always. Plausibly this is a TOTEM ANIMAL kinda thing.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's an indie guilt vs. rockism thing.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember seeing a great show about some young lions who were just learning how to hunt and would starve if they didn't learn quick. They kept letting their prey get away or got scared off by jackals, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to take something down.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I just watched a similar thing about Cheetas, which inspired this grand work. One of them got killed by a lion in the end.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you're right. Do indie-guilters have bigfanged TOTEM ANIMALS, though?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I always want the predator to win, though I was highly impressed once with the teamwork that resulted in some meercats seeing off a snake that was after their young.

I remember one of the David Attenbrough (sp?) things on the Beeb had some killer whales playing volleyball with a seal - that was probably a bit much on the side of the predator. I think they were doing it to break it up for the young or something but they certainly seemed to be enjoying themsleves in the process.

kephm (kephm), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Predator everytime. I even root for it against Arnie.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 14 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

yay

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Prey. People who root for the predators are the pricks who are spoiling this planet. Except when the footage is shot unfairly, giving you time to identify with the predator before they commit their heinous deed.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Circle of life, Alba.

Wooden (Wooden), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry. I don't actually want lions to stop eating antelopes. It just seems a bit weird to actually cheer for them.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more worried that anyone would root for either.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You've gotta root.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no, no I don't.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you not find yourself, when idly watching some sport you know nothing about, ending up supporting one or other player/team?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this isn't sport.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Then why are there hot dog stands?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

because you're on crack?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 October 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well anyway, GO PREY!!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I always root for the documentary crew 'cause they have a hard but cool job.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 14 October 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

don't you wish the crew would take out the hyenas? hyenas are only ever there in cameos, as the boo-hiss villain of the piece.

"and heah, we see the hyena pack, stalking the young cheetah cubs...BANG!..have that you fucker"

re: the seals and killer whales thing, there were so many complaints about that, i don't think they even show that bit any more. it was a bit gruesome alright.

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Friday, 15 October 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

A wildlife biologist once calculated that the prey gets away without a scratch about 90% of the time.

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 15 October 2004 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, then they give the home videos to cbs

"brushes with death: amazing stories from the wildebeest"

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Friday, 15 October 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

One evening in Santa Cruz, CA, occasional ILX poster CHUCK TATUM took me over to some random apartment where crunchy types were hitting the bong and watching a looped video of man get attacked by an alligator. It was everything about college life I would like to forget.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I go both ways. Sometimes I'm sympathetic for, like, the little monkeys, and sometimes I really wanna see an ibex get chewed to shit by an enraged crocodile.

Actually, if the predator is crocodilian I'm always on the side of the predator. Otherwise I'm generally for the prey.

Remy (x Jeremy), Friday, 15 October 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God - I forgot about crocodiles. Yeah, they've got to win. And birds of prey, actually. I'm such a hypocrite.
