From the Guardian's website: 9.30am: An Australian drifter was today jailed for life for murdering the British backpacker Caroline Stuttle in 2002.

What other chocolate bars could commit a heinous crime?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Friday, 15 October 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose this is what they call an example Blood And Chocolate.

Elvis Costelol for legal reasons, Friday, 15 October 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What a strange thing to occur to you.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

It could have been worse. She could have been fatally bitten by a rabid Yorkie whilst having a Picnic.

Cough Dough, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I ask you, is the death of a young woman really a fit subject for laughs and Snickers?

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

She'd still be alive if she'd married a Texan.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Joking about this sort of thing is hardly likely to give Anglo-Australian relations a Boost.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The media will Dairy Milk this story for all its worth.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's over two years since the murder - would he have been brought to justice quicker if the police had offered a Bounty for his capture?

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

NEWSFLASH: Australian police discover hitherto undiscovered evidence which reveals that Ms Stuttle was in fact headbutted off the bridge by a Super Mousse.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(just let me know when this gets to Billy Connolly/Ken Bigley territory, if indeed it hasn't already long done so)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What a depressing Topic.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I know. It makes me want to emigrate to Old Jamaica.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

curly-wurly

RJG (RJG), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

shut up you flake

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

give us a twirl

RJG (RJG), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh what a bunch of Smartie pants we are

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Having actually read what Connolly said, it was far less offensive than this thread. His joke was playing on our own unpalatable reactions to stories like the Ken Bigley one. This thread is just frivolity around a horrible subject. I'm don't know if I condemn it or not. But Connolly's is much easier to defend (unless you think his being famous makes a difference, which maybe it does).

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The subject has nothing to do with it, Nick. We're not making fun of the murder, or of the trial, or of the verdict. We're playing with words.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

careless wispa

RJG (RJG), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Connolly's joke was to an adult audience, After Eight in the evening

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You're making fun of it by not giving it any respect.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

mars

RJG (RJG), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

As I tried to say, I don't know if I disapprove or not. I'm just comparing it to the Billy Connolly thing, which was roundly condemned on here (maybe not by the people on this thread - I know it's easy to falsely think of ILE posters en masse).

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Connolly was performing on a stage, I am at home and am not even wearing trousers right now.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The World Wide Web's a stage.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

At this point I could make the Snicker joke if I hadn't used it already - the secret of comedy is timing

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

minstrels

RJG (RJG), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Playing with words...you see...is funny."

Yoshi, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

All the posts on this thread suck Bar Six.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay: psychologically there is a difference between the Bigley murder and this. This verdict gives the whole subject closure - a crime has been done and the offender punished - our subconscious sense of fairness is satisfied. As there's no longer a feeling of outrage, of a debt that hasn't been paid, we can file it away as "done" and make jokes around (but not about) the subject.

Does that make any sense?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

In terms of people googling yes, but I don't think of it like that. In any case it's by no means the same sort of stage as a stage where people have paid to see a celebrity/comedian make jokes. Generally I'd agree with you to be honest, ie saying something in print is slightly more serious, however I love crap puns and got caught up in a wave of them.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(my response was to N)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

dibdab?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

We are but Minstrels who strut and fret our hour on the stage, and then are heard no more.

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

these tasteless puns are not worthy of my Applause, they make me angry, for I have a short Fuse.

it's a really horrible story tho - i'm sure we are all United on that.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the tabloids will crucify RJG

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Take a Break, chaps, Nick's about to blow his top again, here it comes - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(several xposts)

It also helps when the comedian in question isn't a well-known hypocrite who talks socialism while living in Windsor and LA, who rants against hypocrisy while getting his tongue browned by the Roayl Family, and who makes jibes about Bigley's wife when he left his own wife to go off with the woman from Not The Nine O'Clock News.

So that does make a difference.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

these puns could have occurred on many other threads. don't get your knickers in a Twirl.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, I guess it makes sense, but takes of when something stops or starts being horrifying are not as uniform as you imply. I never really cared that much about Bigley, for some reason, partly because I missed seeing him on TV, I guess, and partly because of personal, probably misplaced prejudice about the kind of people who are doing contract work out in Iraq. I feel much more touched by the murder of Caroline Stuttle, and the awful arbritary, petty pointlessness of it.

I was a bit surprised by you joining in, just because of you getting irate at Dan Perry before when he posted for amusement some story of a bloody chainsaw accident.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank goodness lunchtime's not far away. After this thread I could do with a pint in the Lion Bar.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Billy Connolly got the brown tongue from the finger of Fudge that was just enough to give himself a treat.

/hides

suzy (suzy), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba otm, it seems slightly distasteful to use this woman's death as an excuse to play Twix with words.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Personally I find his argument Waifa thin

Dataismus (Dada), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Connolly's gag caused only a Ripple of laughter.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread is a poor pastille of the ideas on the "couple wedded in mcdonalds" one.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, we'll agree to disagree on this one. It's obviously not as Green and Black to you as it is to me.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 15 October 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you ready for Freddie?

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Friday, 15 October 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess Alba just inhabits a different Galaxy from the rest of us.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 15 October 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)
