Best film ever?
Possibly. "A naked American man stole my baloons". "I'm sorry I called you a meatloaf Jack". "Have you ever tried talking to a corpse? It's boring!" "Beware the moon lads, and stick to the road".
A classic of the highest order.

I was afraid that this revive was in the service of announcing an impending remake.

this is a fucking great film, yeah
a recent rescreening of re-animator got me wondering why there was like a five-year stretch in the 80s where people were making really good horror-comedies that were genuinely both scary and funny (those two, evil dead, society, gremlins, return of the living dead, even ghostbusters to some degree, doubtless some others i'm forgetting) and why it vanished as quickly as it appeared

Lots of other stuff during that stretch which aren't quite horror-comedies but have dece comedic elements (Creepshow, CHUD, House, Pieces (although I'm not sure how much the comedy is intentional there), Day of the Dead, Basket Case, Fright Night). Also Toxic Avenger, if you count that as horror. I can't help but feel like cocaine played a role, somehow.

it was the 80s, cocaine played a role in aspect of the entertainment world
whatever dealers were adding to their supply back then needs to be reintroduced and quickly imo
