and what is the longest unbeaten equivalent in American sports?

ANGEL BLAKE, Saturday, 16 October 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, im not a gooner but fuck man they play the beautiful game, and 50 in a row will be some kind of record

AB, Saturday, 16 October 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i amn't bothered, even though they are the gooners. fair fucks to them, they're nearly as good as AC Milan 93

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Saturday, 16 October 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see it, if only because the fiftieth game is next weekend, and a couple of my dearest friends, both Arsenal fans, are coming round to mine to watch it. It's against Man U, and I would imagine it might set a viewing record for the channel for an early-season league game.

The greatest athlete ever, Mildred Didrickson, won something like 40 golf tournaments in a row (this isn't why she was the greatest: this was a minor late footnote in her incredible career), and they aren't a two-person/team contest, of course. Someone in athletics (Ed Moses, Sergei Bubka?) probably had a longer run of victories. I don't know what the best team records are from any sports.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 16 October 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, individual sports don't count.

some agoraphic cricket players can go for years not out.

boom boom.

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Saturday, 16 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The U.S. Women's Basketball team probably has a record like this, but I'm feeling too lazy to look it up.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Saturday, 16 October 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The De La Salle Spartans football team of Concorde, California, went unbeaten from 1991 through last month. 151 wins in a row. They were finally beaten by Bellevue High School, whose quarterback was one year old the last time De La Salle lost.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 17 October 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure there was a Los Angeles Lakers basketball team in the early 1970s that won 33 games in a row.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 17 October 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i really want them to do it
no one has played such beautiful football in my lifetime, they're a joy to watch and i hope they keep going...

robin (robin), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I chime in here to say they definitely should.

B.A.R.M.S. (Barima), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Rocky Marciano
won 49 (43 ko's) - lost 0 - drawn 0 - tot 49

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ed Moses' record was amazing - 122 straight victories in the 400m hurdles.

Dave B (daveb), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

and to do it against fucking united would be so special.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 17 October 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a Spurs fan, and as such can't countenance this. But (spit, cough) they are really fucking good. Oh God, why did it have to be Arsenal?

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 17 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Jahangir Khan: 555 squash matches without defeat from 1981 to 1986.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

united fucking up their cute little 50 game streak would be so special

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

people wanting Utd to win, gah

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

people wanting the arse to win, gah

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

united fucking up their cute little 50 game streak would be so special

And also so so unlikely.

___ (___), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

what? if anyone's going to beat Arsenal it'll be Man Utd

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

they were one missed penalty away from ending the whole thing before it all even started last season. sigh. it could have been all different.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Phil "the power" Taylor

8 World Championships in a row.

Davel (Davel), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

For a side that cannot score against Birmingham with every striker playing, I somehow doubt they will trouble Arsenal.

Also, considering they could not even beat Chelsea, unlike their neighbours...

___ (___), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

In answer to the original question: me, I want them to make it 50.

Incidentally, Cesc Fabregas was never known as Cesc Gay and hasn't changed his name to appear more butch, as I suggested earlier in the season. Cesc Gay is in fact a Catalan film director.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 18 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm much more interested in the dec 28th fixture of Bolton vs Blackburn when finally we can see the epic battle between Campo and Tugay.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

United will raise their game against Arsenal and they beat them in the FA Cup last year so it is not exactly unthinkable.

I can't see it happening though. I maintain that Arsenal's unbeaten run will finally be ended by someone like Fulham.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

middlesborough almost ended it a few games ago.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Until Arsenal put four goals past them, you mean?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly. i sure wasn't expecting them to do that at the time

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

what? if anyone's going to beat Arsenal it'll be Man Utd

Boring boring Chelski got a better chance.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Disputed. Chelsea have not exactly been free-scoring this season and I'm not sure I can see them strangling the life out of Henry, Pires, Reyes and friends the way they're playing at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

A good pair of xposts earlier:

Ed Moses' record was amazing - 122 straight victories in the 400m hurdles.
-- Dave B

and to do it against fucking united would be so special.
-- Julio Desouza

Yes, Ed Moses never beat Man Utd at the 400m hurdles. I suspect he would have done so, had the contest been arranged.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 18 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Cristiano Ronaldo injured after painful hurdle/stepover confusion.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

ken don't be so bitter -- learn to live with our dominance and you'll be happier.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on ye Reds

Serghei Daduismus (Dada), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, Ken's from Milton Keynes - he has to be a Manchester United fan by law.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

And who's their next game after the big five-o? Yep, it's us, at Highbury. The way our season's been going so far, a 3-0 win seems inevitable. Dexter Blackstock hat-trick. 23 reported dead of laughter. Lose the next twenty but win all the remaining and end up relegated on goal difference. That sort of thing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ARRRRRGGGGH! i just did my transfer for the week and now i'm gonna miss Ronaldo as well. after the Pires debacle it's a miracle i'm still 2nd in the fantasy league...

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I hope Arsenal do it - not that I'm a fan, in fact I used to be pretty hostile to them, but my dislike of ManYoo is so intense these days that it tends to spill over into mild affection for any of their serious rivals.

frankiemachine, Monday, 18 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Roonster will be so up for spoiling the party.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 18 October 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Roonster sounds a bit like Rooster, and also Rune Star.

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hang on, Ken's from Milton Keynes - he has to be a Manchester United fan by law.
-- Markelby (boyincorduro...), October 18th, 2004 4:13 PM. (later)

dude, MK Dons, innit.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Are Arsenal the most entertaining thing in any field of entertainment at the moment? I can't think of anything better. If so, the unbeaten thing certainly adds to it. Perhaps I am blinded by the hype, it's not as if I ever see anything other than brief highlights. They are certainly more entertaining that the supposedly wonderful Barcelona side what I watched the other night, admittedly in a local derby.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope manu spoil it for them, I'm beginning to loathe their dominance in English football.

"Roooooonie can't fail!"

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

man u roooooo/ruuuuuu ok! wow i hope someone chants that.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Arsenal are gonna go 100 unbeaten.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Starting to hate Man Utd's dominance now is like joining the war against Japanese expansionism the day after Nagasaski got nuked.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i think ste means he hates arsenal's new found "dominance" on the english game.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yes i did, thanks ken.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Luton got beat so I've given up on my short lived interest in English

Serghei Daduismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

...Football

Serghei Daduismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Luton got beat in the spelling-bee final

xpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

They lost on penulties

Serghei Daduismus (Dada), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

They still lead the UK in Islamic fundamentalism and shitty airports, though.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

punalties, surely

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Game on, fuck faces.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

united fucking up their cute little 50 game streak would be so special
And also so so unlikely.
-- ___ (tripleunderscore__...), October 18th, 2004 10:26 AM. (later)

ah well, ay?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

remember this 'cause its all yr gonna get out of this season ken.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Fergie had them sussed.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You are all forgetting that cheating diving frenchman Pires. Portsmouth were leading Arsenal at Highbury last season - only for Pires to Dive to get a Penalty at the end of the match.

Portsmouth should have won that that game, and there would be none of this 49 games rubbish.

oh and next week it's Pompey Vs Man Utd, last season Pompey defeated Man Ure at Fratton Park.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that was nice.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The only negative thing I can see here is that Man Utd just got three points.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

oh well at least "fans" like Julio are disappointed.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I don't have a season ticket. its all true!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 24 October 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wayne Rooney has the same birthday as my mother.

It's funny, I was quite keen on Arsenal making it to fifty unbeaten, but now I'm quite keen on them having lost.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 24 October 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)
