Is there anything better than this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Welk for bio

Welk's California automobile license plate read A1ANA2, referencing his trademark count-off before each number, "A one, and a two..."

His band continues to appear in a dedicated theater in Branson, Missouri even though Welk is now deceased. A retirement resort community in Escondido, California is named after Welk.

I've got his autobiography around here, found it for a dime or something.

i read somewhere (maybe the linked wikipedia bio) that mr. welk's first language was german even though he was born in north dakota -- which i find interesting in that this is one example of his being from an america that is long past. there's also something to be said for his sticking to his thing for as long as he did -- looked at that way, then whether i, or any other ILXor, actually liked his music is beside the point.

he also reminds me of all of the polish weddings i've been to in my life w/ polkas and accordians.

My wife owns all 13 or so of the Lennon Sisters albums. Recently, I cleaned all of her old vinyl and repaired her turntable and to test the results, put them on. Y'know, they were pretty good. Not my cup of tea, exactly, but still...

I find it odd (and this may be the whisky speaking) that at my advanced age -- 23 -- I still find Lawrence Welk entertaining in a more-than-ironic way. I actually enjoy his show. Not that I find the music on it decent or listenable, but it's generally quite sweet.

The C or C breakdown as follows

C[1]- classic; good, strange, reliquary genius. A sad and superceded vassal of antediluvian genius.

{OR}

C[2] - ironic; sincere, insane, misguided spearhead of a since-nonexistent trope. A sad and superceded vassal of antediluvian genius.

I've always felt vaguely irritated by people that overenthusiastically embrace their ethnicity, but Lawrence Welk does make me feel something positive about being a midwestern German catholic.

Also, Branson is the weirdest place on earth.

Ned, he has more than one autobiography. Or, rather, there's a sequel to his first autobiography.

I couldn't find him on YouTube. I wonder whether anyone has put anything up since he died.

Stan Freberg's Welk parody officially the funniest thing ever. And it invents Mark E Smith.

Was that show filmed live? Seems like they could have edited out his throat-clearing. Unless that was a planned segue into the "One Toke" song.

Welk had no idea it was about weed

Dude also claimed his music was "champagne music" while never touching a glass himself. "My doctor says I can't have it..." OK nerd.
