not much time to write but i was wondering if the 1990s poll had arrived.

i met some international students here who guided me to the computer lab at the university. very useful. i'm sick with the flu so haven't been doing much for the past two days. i may go elsewhere after tomorrow, probably in or near the veneto because my flight out is from venice.

hope everyone is well.

ciao

amateurist

Ah, you Chianti-swilling layabout. ;-) Have fun!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

my university friends just abandoned me (i didnt want to follow them around or anything) so im back on my own.

any padua/veneto tips are much welcome. i wont be going to venice proper this time, though.

Go down the Brenta and look at the Palladian villas! That's what I'd do anyway. Or go the other direction and take a day trip to the Dolomites.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, to see fair PADUA!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

HI! I don't have any Venice tips since I only went there for a day and it was like 10 years ago, but taking the water taxi motorboat was fun when I was 15 and it's probably still fun now. PS You forgot to lend us the Twin Peaks season 2 tapes before you left but we forgive you. Have fun in Italy, am., and call when you get back.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I will always remember taking a water taxi in Venice through the fog at 7am.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No 90's list yet!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Our water taxi raced with another water taxi! It was all very exciting but I couldn't help wondering, even at the tender age of 15, if this had been staged for the tourists. Also in Venice, I purchased a small glass statue of the Pink Panther playing a saxophone, which I may still have somewhere.

Spencer is that from taming of the Shrew?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Monday, 18 October 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they had water taxis in Shakespeare's time.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer is that from taming of the Shrew?

Yes, for some reason my Latin Teacher in high school, a booming voiced 400 pound man named, get this, Mr. Cser, would always work that line into just about every class.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

What IS the status with the 1990s poll, someone? Gear?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaaaaah, Padua.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt there a prada outlet store somewhere round there

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you're thinking of pradua!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway hi amateurist, hope you are doing well & feeling better. i was in padua last year (actually 2 years ago, oops), and i had fun walking around and shit. i can''t remember anything else particularly exciting that i did, tho.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hey all. nick: i'm not going to venice this time out. too wet, too expensive considering i've been sleeping 16 hours a night recently (after a week plus of virtually no sleep).

padua is not terribly exciting but i've had a nice time wandering around. i won't feel terrible if i don't "do" much. maybe tomorrow i will feel like taking a day trip elsewhere. don't want to stray too far however. i would go to bologna but that seems like i'd need several days to get accustomed.

where is the brenta?

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. phil-two you know i don't buy fancy clothes, even at discounts.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Brenta is a river north of Padua which runs to the coast just south of venice.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

amst.. you can see much of Bologna in 2-3 days if you were so inclined. I recommend it!

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Markleby the '90s poll will be underway sooner rather than later, my job just got extended and I've been meeting a writing deadline and thusly I've had no time to tally up the massive number of votes for (insert Pulp song)

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

well i leave tomorrow afternoon so bologna is out. but maybe i'll try visiting this brenta....

i saw the giotto masterpiece in the scrovegni chapel yesterday. quite a sight, although i didn't get to inspect everything in the regulated 15 minutes they give you to gape. i plan to head to the botanical garden this afternoon, supposedly the oldest such in europe.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Try and find a boat trip that stops at the Palladian villas. They're beautiful.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if there's a bus to the brenta.

a boat trip--kind of expensive no? i'll look on the interweb to see if i find anything.

my not speaking a word of italian has been problematic, but at least i have my french, because that's made a few conversations possible.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, given that i'm still sick, and it's rainy out, i don't know that a boat tour is what i want right now. i'm reasonably content to just walk around and drink tea in cafes.

i bought a mina cd; it's ok. stuff from 63-65. is there any other mina that folks might recommend?

and should i buy t he italian dvd set of the director's cut of "until the end of the world"--it's not a very good movie in its shorter version, but i'm kind of curious. 45 euros curious though? i dunno.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

I have four days in Padua in August. Any tips?

caek, Friday, 13 June 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)

If I can get Marco Damiani to notice this thread revive you're set, as he lives there. It's where I stayed during most of my Italian trip and I will say that all the 'typical' things to see are all pretty much worth it.

That said I had a great fondness for the Orto Botanico in particular.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 June 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

Also, cheap train it into Venice for a day at least.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 June 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

I have nothing to add except that I saw a very good staging of Taming of the Shrew last night

and what, Friday, 13 June 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

Setting off for Padua in an hour or two. I have my ticket for the public screening of Burn after Reading at Venice (festival opens on the last night of my conference). We have the afternoon off at some point, so my plan right now is to check out the Orto Botanico too. Good times.

caek, Sunday, 24 August 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

hot like july here. mmmm.

caek, Monday, 25 August 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

Yup, that matches with my memories of the place.
