i searched and couldn't find a thread.

Got this at the weekend and have played it pretty solidly since then. Passing seems much improved as does volleying! Scoring a volley with Ashley Cole from 30 yards in the International Cup Final is one of my lifes defining moments now.

What does everybody else think?

Rooney isn't as good as i expect he would be.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago)

What is it called in the US?

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago)

Ireland are criminally shit once again.

I am still deciding. is it a bit too easy to score???? maybe not at all!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Ireland are criminally shit once again.

Does the game accurately reflect this?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago)

ha-ha. Damien Duff is rubbish in it! the whole team is more average than real life.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i like that scholes is still at england, and those days of having to face France with Zidane are far from over.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago)

ha-ha.

Yeah, sorry. It helps to understand that I know nothing about football, and Ireland could be brilliant or awful for all I know.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago)

scholes is still at england

he isn't IRL????

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago)

they clearly finished this game before euro 2004.

its the only way i can explain Rooney's inaccurate stats and Scholes inclusion for England.

And the lack of accurate transfers. Apart from Owen at Real.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

:(

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago)

how have you found it Cozen? or do you not have it?

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I scored a goal with Owen and he opened his mouth and it was the scariest thing ever.

He was missing every other tooth, i had to switch the playstation off for a while.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a telly nevermind a PS2 right now, ronan.

I will go home at the weekend. my little brother best have it.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

or I will be stoshus miserable.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:03 (twenty years ago)

I just won the 2016 European Championships with Ireland on Champ, out of (little) interest. Beat Germany 4-2 in the final.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm in 2021 with Tottenham on Champ Man. I'm too scared to start the new season, i love my players too much, but i'm fearful that they don't quite have what it takes to succeed in europe.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago)

I've just taken over the task of rebuilding Manchester United for the 2016/17 season. They have £300 million in the bank and a first team with an average age of 33. They also still have Tim Howard in goal. I lost a pre-season friendly to Livingstone. Oh boy.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Let us not derail the physical with the mental though.

Chairman ROFLMAO (Dom Passantino), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Adam: Scholes quit international football to concentrate on Man U.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. It's a bit of a shame really. We get Nicky Butt instead.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 18 October 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

I think its terrific, lots of improvements on pro evo3. The through ball and movement off the ball are much better.
One flaw though, too many games are being decided on penalties.

Bidfurd, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 08:06 (twenty years ago)

it certainly looks better, there is alot more motion capture. the defending seems quite different, you really have to stand your ground, possibly cos the tackling is improved, it's realistic in the sense that it seems more physical than before.

are the headers impossible again, as they were in pro evo 3???

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

Is it wrong to buy a PS2 purely on the basis of this game?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:15 (twenty years ago)

shooting with free kicks seems easier than before

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:16 (twenty years ago)

it isn't. but you don't have to either.. dude GTA3 san andreas is out next week. i won't be out for months.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago)

and singstar 2. smackdown vs raw.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago)

wait one flaw I remember, you take a crappy shot, it rolls along the ground, and the keeper is ROOTED to the spot as he watches it bop off the post slowly. anyone else found this???

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:19 (twenty years ago)

was david james in goal that the time?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:30 (twenty years ago)

The Goalkeeping AI seems a LOT better.

Tackling seems so realistic, i sometimes find myself fouling people just because it looks nice.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:43 (twenty years ago)

better? but have you not noticed that shot thing yet? that's my biggest fear for the game!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:44 (twenty years ago)

reading this thread without actually having a playable copy of the game accessible is the worst form of punishment.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting simultaneously worried and frustrated.

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:33 (twenty years ago)

I take back the Goalkeeping AI thing, i just let in a truly ridiculous goal. I pressed O so that he would boot it to safety but instead he decided to watch the ball roll into the net.

ARG!

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:13 (twenty years ago)

i had to change the camera angle to "wide" too - the Highbury Angle really did my head in.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Henry in the new TV advert - very wooden! undoing all his fine work with Citroen

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago)

the players have more personality in this game.

lots of nice new touches: i. running down the wing (R1) and letting go R1, tapping R2, the player motions to cross and then hit R1 again to steam past the defender; ii. one-on-one with a defender, lightly tap up-up or down-down on the left analogue and the little guy motions to move off in that direction but stops thus sending the defender in that direction (quick tricky to pull this off); iii. notice tht the trick I've been advising fr ages on pe3 (i.e. pulling yr guy off his rails) actually has a name in this one: 'super-cancel'.

it's a similar game to pe3 in a lot of ways but entirely different in feel, again. I still haven't figured out the shooting, to any great extent. and the free kicks seem like they could take a while of fannying about with them (like the new 2-men FK option, esp. using R3 to roll the ball a short distance, laying it off...)

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:25 (twenty years ago)

is it me or do some players dive?

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I have noticed the shot thing a couple of times but always when the ball is destined to hit the post -> I just figured the computer makes a calculation and knows where the ball is going to and decides lazily not to send the keeper to try save it. I've not seen any goals scored past ROOTED keepers.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:31 (twenty years ago)

I think there is diving yes. I just can't pinpoint the actual differences from PE3, though you're right it does feel very very different. The headers and shots are still kind of sinking in for me, the shots in particular seem erratic, sometimes I score from 25 yards, other times it can seem impossible not to simply put the ball straight at the keeper from just 7 yards or whatever.

I've never used "super-cancel", ever, I think my PE3 success was always based around using R2. I think it's still a fairly essential part of the game.

There's something about the passing in the new one which is crisper, simultaneously more effective but also more random? Passes seem less under your control, that said quick counter attacks are very easy, still haven't decided if they're too easy.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Is it wrong to buy a PS2 purely on the basis of this game?

Well, if it's just for this game, you should buy an xbox instead, and get that version when it comes out in a week or two. Prettier, no slow down. But you'll need an adaptor so you can use a PS2 pad, the xbox one's no good for pro evo. Or much else, really.

Big plus of the xbox version though - it's playable online. Which could be the best thing EVER, really.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 23 October 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago)

headers and shots I can't figure out but I have faith in them. another nice thing although I've not really figured out how useful it is or even a use for it, really: when you pass the ball you can hold R2 (??) and the passer will follow the ball, making a little run for the receiver. also, hold X when shooting from free-kicks to make the ball dip, apparently. I think the feeling thing is a combination of i. a quality of light (the graphics have a fuzzier feel to them than in pe3, kinda like the move toward vice city from gta3) which just gives the whole game a more cinematic rather than gamey feel; ii. the aesthetic, I guess, by which I mean the players' name tags, the menu screens, etc. is all much more light than I remember it, with whites & colours; and iii. the controls, although largely the same, there is an as-yet un-pinpointable difference in the feeling of controlling each of your men.

as I said, one of my favourite things thus far is the different personality of the players. this is something pes has always been good at, moving from ISS (notable haircuts) through PES (notable haircuts and accurate gaits and movement) to pe4 (which seems to have captured the character of players' movements.) for example, go valencia and check out aimar - he plays like a mulleted, weirdo genius. which I'm sure he is, in real life.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 23 October 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago)

i picked up pro evo 2 today for a fiver used from xtravision.

this is a good thing.

d.arraghmac, Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:19 (twenty years ago)

actually the thing about the controls being the same but feeling different is extremely otm. R2 for instance, you have to press it slightly less and it executes the dummy less frequently and in a slower way than in PES3, I'm sure the game is full of differences in controls like this.

And the R2 to make the passer make a run seems great yeah!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 23 October 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

also: why did they put in that screen between the ball going behind and the keeper taking the goal kick? it's badly coded cs it's always jerky and um utterly needless.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 25 October 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
this is so good.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 13 November 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago)

i've still only played it once :(( (the curse of GTA3)

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 13 November 2004 21:12 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody else think there are far too many offside decisions?

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Sunday, 14 November 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah for sure. players are in shit positions all the time. overall I have to agree with cozen though, it is brilliant. I can't for the life of me pinpoint the differences between it and 3, but it is well different.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 14 November 2004 04:54 (twenty years ago)

i've taken to playing 20 minute games.

the games still never spill over into anything above 4 or 5 - 0 though. On fifa, whatever setting you had, over the course of 20 minutes at least a dozen goals would go in.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:20 (twenty years ago)

the pitch seems a lot smaller in 4 than in 3... it seems to get pretty crowded on the pitch (which is a good thing).

it could well just be the "highbury camera angle" that's used as the default that's doing it though.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago)

i changed the default angle to the same one as in 3.

i have a real thing about camera angles on footie games.

Hari Ashurst (Toaster), Monday, 15 November 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
unbelievably good, unbelievably addictive.

in more exciting control-oriented news: the xbox versions plays slightly different to the ps2!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

if you put a high through ball over the top (high through ball is great in pes4 for the first time btw, try it!) and press shoot, sometimes they do these amazing flying half volleys, that loop over the keeper without you having to actually do the lob button.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

the long passes (cross field!) is outrageous.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 February 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

we have to have a game, someday

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

"it's only like 5p on ryanair you stupid shit." (- N.)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

hahahah "crisisbless".

the eagles should rename themselves, this is the best name ever.

i love guessing the clubs from the names

"west midlands village"??

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm still very addicted to this

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah if you time the half volleys perfect they are devastating! (i can never time them, though :( )

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

i wish i have online thingie for the ps2 - we only have xbox live so it's online fifa 2005 only (pro evo is on the ps2)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

i got beaten by scotland 2-0 earlier so i was pretty pissed off.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 01:25 (twenty years ago)

Middlebrook, no they're not Boro, they're Bolton!!??!!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Classic Argentina is where it's at. I had to give Maradona even bigger hair though. Scored a fantastic half-volley with Burrachaga the other day - slammed in off the far post.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

starring chris sutton as 'sultan'.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

'farzel haar' sounds like some seaman's v. accurate description of a certain kind of cloud formation over the firth.

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Farzel Haar is indeed a great great phrase. I may name my son Farzel Haar.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

ok, so I bought Winning Eleven the other day and, if you're lucky, I will be peppering this thread with a non-stop barrage of questions.

QUESTION 1 (of 1,532)

When a player gets injured and is removed from the game can you not put in a substitute?

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

in the pes3, Korea or some team had two players listed next to each other on their bench called "Vent" and "Anger".

Cozen otm about Farzel Haar.

FROIBAAD.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I now officially proclaim this my favorite game of all time.

I spent the past four days gaining valuable experience in the Dutch league which has made me polder and wiser.

Also, I scored for the first time off a corner kick.

Ajax is one tough club.

cleveland marriott (lawrence kansas), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

when a player gets injured and is removed from the game you can put in a substitute. start button -> 'team formation' / 'change player' -> select injured player -> select replacement player.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

BELO HORIZONTE
BEJUTASSLE
NEXTBAUMEDGE

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

(that's cruzeiro, besiktas, and west bromwich albion.)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I don't know what happened cozen. My guy was taken off the field and I hear the announcer say "Looks like they'll be playing with ten now". Maybe he got a red card while getting himself hurt in the process.

Anyway, this game is better than any other sports game I've ever played. Seriously, I'm a huge American football fan but this is much more engaging, fast paced and addicting than Madden or ESPN.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 21 February 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
i'm pwning my flatmate on this.. i've been beating him using australia playing his england!!

and last night i was italy and he had no chance. 5-1 1-0 3-1.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Picked up the US version the other week. Easily my most played game right now.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I got it on Friday in that Game "4 shite games + 99p" thing. Still can't suss out heading, though I did score two cracking diving headers at the near post... with Ronaldinho of all people. I also need to work out how to do all the L+R button fannydangling effectively.

Game of the weekend was beating my brother in an Arsenal v Man U game. I was 3-0 and playing with 10 men, Henry got a hat trick to seal a memorable 5-4 victory in extra time.

England are far too good and Ireland are far too shit.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

it's the only game I play, it never loses its sheen in 2 player, though I seldom if ever play 1 player.

Onimo try hammering R2 alot when you're dribbling, you'll eventually work out the best ways to use it, it's sort of a light dummy, if you try and use it as you take your finger off the sprint button (R1) and keep switching between them, you can do some nice jinking runs.

Headers are a bit weird in it, they often just blaze over, though you can get some, it's sort of random really. I've found on free kicks from a fairly central position, around midfield or close in to the box, you should aim for the corner of the six yard box, then try and header the ball in the opposite direction. You can get some lovely set piece headers this way.

Does anyone find free kicks near impossible to score directly in this? I can make the keeper pull of phenomenal saves, hit the bar, hit the post, score the rebounds, pass it to a fucker in the box and score, but never directly score free kicks.

I swear I finished lectures last week and have a thesis to do, I have played this with one of my mates from college pretty much every day.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

OTM re: england being far too good - michael owen in this game has become this unstoppable beast, who basically storms his way round down the field, immune to tackling, and terrorising defenders with his monstrous teeth.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 31 March 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

shooting with nedved from ANYWHERE you feel like and it going in is really fun.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

del piero is also good for that.. and one of the italian strikers is NEVER offside!! you throw in a throughball and he times his run to perfection

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

offside in pro evo 4 is the biggest bug.

sometimes my players run forward when i dont even want them to.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

the players pass to places when you don't want them to.. when you tell them to make a throughball to the wing, they sometimes go for a useless straight throughball to some idiot striker in the centre (even though you are like pointing the left stick UPWARDS)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 31 March 2005 11:59 (twenty years ago)

Kanu is like a giant. i bougth him in the masters and he is huge. He isn't very fast but can catch almost anyone because of his stride length. he bounds forward toward the ball all like "FI FI FO FUM"

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 31 March 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Throwing the ball in from the side is basically useless 'cause half the time the fucker throws straight to someone on the wrong team.

adam (adam), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

the throw ins are the biggest bug.

the offside thing is not a bug I don't think, I think you just can't ping through balls through unless you actually let the guy time his run, defences are cleverer about offsides.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

no-one is better than me at this, in the world.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

do you think we can have a game somehow when I go to Glasgow? (must book, tonight, actually

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

RJG has a ps2, failing that I think n.dastoor has a ps2. I will bring my copy to glasgow.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

could be a big game

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

will you guys be playing scotland vs ireland (using the teams?)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

no, no we won't.

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 7 April 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

i played using scotland vs my flatmate's england the other night - haha i actually somehow managed to score using dickov. But then, just to prove the game reflects real life, two defensive shambles (including an obligatory own goal!!!) costed scotland a famous win.

i changed to sweden afterwards and whipped his ass.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 7 April 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

This week I have mostly been playing the single player game as Chelsea and I can report that Kezman is a clinical finisher. Favourite move is Duff bursting in from the right wing to the edge of the box and squaring it for Kezman to rattle into the top left corner. Robben isn't as good as he should be. Makelele is exactly right.

I like how when you play Spurs the machine keeps Defoe on the bench until it's too late for him to save the game. Just like real life.

I still can't do headers properly.

Keepers are making too many stunning double saves.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 7 April 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)
