American ILXers in London, Let's VOTE absentee-style

Sometime this week we have to post our absentee ballots.

Some of us may have to go to Grosvenor Square to have our ballots notarized and we all of us need witnesses of some kind, so some weekday morning it might be an idea to go down to the US Embassy together and just get it sorted. Only thing is the notary service is open until NOON.

This is where to make sure nobody flakes out. Who's up for taking a morning's holiday from work to make sure we complete our various ballots properly, one's chads do not hang, etc, and then post them off (and get proof of postage). Thursday any good for anyone else?

Bugger, everyone's at Kate's gig. And I'm not. Double bugger (Ed waylaid at work due to IT dumbfuckery).

suzy (suzy), Monday, 18 October 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Colette? SGS? Lauren? Tracer? Bumpin' it up for the 9-5 crowd.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you actually gotten your absentee ballot in the mail from the relevant people in the states?

marianna, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I received two ballots, of different formats. I mailed both, however one was returned to me. They both had the same amount of postage on them.

I'm trying to mail the second one (the actual one with the chads) again today, with big letters of "sender" and "TO:" written on it. Mine apparently doesn't need to be notarized, but I'm available thursday morning if anyone needs my presence.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't received anything yet - despite sending off my request 5 months ago - I guess I'll have to use the all purpose ballot they gave me at the embassy - though it looks like they didn't register me as absentee. I'll have to sort it out next time I go home.

marianna, Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife sent hers off last week only for it to turn up in our post the next day. Royal Mail idiots posted it to the address on the back of the envelope despite the fact it had an Air Mail sticker & had been franked on the front with the LA address on it. Morons.

Hopefully it will actually get there this time.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like what happened to me. They even cancelled the stamps! Luckily in the infinite wisdom of the city of Chicago, they sent me two and if they don't get this second one, they're counting the first. Apparently. I hope.

sgs (sgs), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Tony Blair has instructed the Royal Mail (or whatever it's called these days, Cornutia PLC or something) to discard or mis-send US postal ballots that smell like they may contain Democratic votes. They've got sniffer dogs trained to detect the smell of liberal households (muesli, marijuana) on the envelopes.

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yeah, smells like guilt

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

In which case I will call my City Hall back home - where the ballot goes - and ask them if I may send it Recorded Delivery. I think the channels to Minnesota are still open.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

my ballot is supposedly on its way over to me. i'm trying to figure out what my work schedule is going to be, but it shouldn't be a problem to arrange around this.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you can't send international recorded to the US or canada their postal systems don't make nice with those of the rest of the world. There are assured ways though (fedex, dhl, ups etc.)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

After voting from overseas from a number of years, I was disappointed when it came to light after the 2000 debacle that the absentee ballots weren't exactly being, you know, counted or anything. Hopefully, a little more attention will be paid this time.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I sent my ballot (which did not need to be notarized) DHL -- as I requested it from London it was sent from Detroit to there. As I am now in Hong Kong, I had it sent from London to Honkers. From Honkers, I sent it DHL to Detroit.

That ballot has circumnavigated the globe, they fucking better count it.

Incidently, I received this from Democrats Abroad in London last week, if this is useful to anyone:

ABSENTEE BALLOTS: If you registered and have not yet received your
absentee ballot you should request a Federal Write-In Ballot immediately
by emailing us at voting2004@aol.com. Please provide your current
mailing address and the state, county, and town where you last resided in the
US. See note below for eligibility.

LATE BALLOT REQUESTS: If you have not requested an absentee ballot you
may still be able to get one by contacting your local election
officials which you can find from: http://www.vote-smart.org/

rkl (rkl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds like a fun trip o my citizens!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, I missed off this bit:

FEDERAL WRITE IN BALLOTS: You are eligible to use one if you used the
federal application (which we sent out, or which you would have
downloaded from sites such as fvap.org and overseasvote2004.org) AND if your
request would have been received by October 2.

Note: You should send your write-in ballot in as soon as you can. If
you subsequently receive your official absentee ballot you should also
send that in. The local officials know to only count the write-in if
they do not receive the official ballot.

rkl (rkl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

RKL - are you the person I think you are?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

By which I mean, did I spent an hour or so sitting outside a beer tent with you at Glastonbury with other people who might just be posting on this forum?

(Apologies for derailment)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Why yes, MDC, it most certainly is -- sorry I didn't see you before my far east tour, I fully intended to show up at the party, but got derailed by crapulent traffic. How you?

rkl (rkl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

this is all making me paranoid about votes not being delivered/counted whether accidental or otherwise. i await/expect a BBC News article about said fear (the oh-so-subtle anti-Bush slant of BBC News is always fun to notice - as opposed to the pro stance on Fox which is abhorrent of course).

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Rkl - Yep, all is good over here. When are you back in London? (This was all just a wild hunch based on your initials and the Detroit-London-Hong Kong thing). And also I remember you trying to get expats voting at the last election.

Erm, anyway - yes, all American expats vote. Unless you're planning on voting for Bush.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, I was highly suspicious in the last election

especially with Michigan being a swing state that wound up going to Gore by the narrowest of margins. I had registered with Dems Abroad in January so that I could vote in the primaries. Then I received from the City Clerk a card exactly 2 days before the election stating I needed to notarise some postcard at the Embassy that I was a US Citizen and then they would sent me my ballot -- I didn't have to do this to vote in the primary, so it struck me as very, very odd, especially as there was no conceivable way I would have been able to get the ballot in time to be counted.

But, I vote in Wayne County (which went Gore by about 90%), so possibly it was merely an honest snafu.

rkl (rkl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey MDC -- I should be back by the New Year. Although there is no conceivable way the project I was sent here to do will be done by that time, I suspect this is when it will be.

rkl (rkl), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

did you tell DA that you were from michigan? we're one of the few states that has to have the application for absentee ballots notarised, and they really know their stuff.

i don't need to have my ballot notarised. (and just got back from holiday, so can't take the day off, sadly)

i haven't gotten it, actually, but will call my township clerk if i don't have it tomorrow. it's cool because it's so small town that i can just call him at home and ask what's up.

if anyone needs the emergency ballots and/or wants to check if their state's ballot needs to be notarised, let me know. i've got a stash of the ballots and the big black book of info from the voting office, so can hopefully help with questions. some states have ballot deadlines in the next week, i'll try to post the email that has all the dates.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't got my Michigan ballot yet, so I'll just be using the federal write in ballot - I think I have one at home, but I'll double check and get back to you Colette. (I did have my app fo absentee ballot notarised at the embassy so I really don't know what the problem is)

marianna, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm wondering if the michigan absentee ballots have actually been printed? has anyone received one?

i'm writing a letter to the secretary of state once the election is over, politely asking them to lift the notary requirement on on the FPCA, since we're one of the only states that still has to do this. it was frustrating to have to take half a day off work to do this, and would probably put someone that was less determined off voting.

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

As I have received a Proper Ballot I have TWO absentee ballots free to anyone who might need them.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

yay, my ballot came today! i'm actually going to put it in a regular envelope to avoid all the royal mail confusion, mail it to my parents who will take it over to tom, our township clerk. he said that's probably the fastest, easiest way. woo!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! Oh Colette you've got to get over to the Pat Robertson thread. Hahaha.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my Michigan ballot over 3 week ago

rkl (rkl), Thursday, 21 October 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

can't read the whole article at this office, but yeah, there's some fishy stuff happening.

i read in the detroit free press that many voters had been misinformed about absentee rules, and had two articles about the fact that voters can request ballots until 1 november.

also, a friend of a friend had a hard time getting her ballot, and had actually given up, until i put her in touch with democrats abroad. it's so frustrating!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to bust in on your admirable thread, but the title may have made me realise I'm an idiot. Is 'Rock The Vote' a pun on 'Rock The Boat'? If it is, it's taken me a long time to get it...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If so, you're not alone...it didn't occur to me either.

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 21 October 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So, let's have a poll - how many for Kerry and how many for Bush?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Kerry McFadden and her boobs?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 21 October 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally mailed my ballot, with the correct postage, the man behind the counter reassured me, yesterday. I haven't changed my license since my address moved to MA, so my vote is going to another likely-blue state.
