Friends Breaking Up

OK, so I'm pretty sure my housemate is in his room breaking up with his girl, who happens to be a long-time personal friend of mine. I've known her since infancy. Thing is, he and I just moved to Chicago (both graduated college, and were lured here by the possible existance of jobs) and she's soon to be here. So I think it's a pre-emptive strike on his part... sort of "wrap things up before they become more complicated." Suggestions on how to weather the coming storm would be appreciated.

lock the door.

There are no simple solutions to such situations. You're a human being with a heart (I guess), use it, and don't take sides unless it's really necessary.

Don't open your mouth or express your opinion relating to anything about their relationship. It will bite you in the ass.

if youre best friends with both of them theyre going to make you pick sides.. sounds rough. good luck.

is he breaking up with her on the phone?

unless one is the obvious asshole, i do my best to try and be switzerland in these situations. thankfully the one time this really could have been an issue i was able to tell them that they were BOTH nuts and i wasn't taking sides. since they were trying to remain friends (in the typically fucked-up way), they actually appreciated that.

is he breaking up with her on the phone?

Yes. I warned against that.

Make it extremely clear that there's no reason you should pick sides and that you're going to continue to be friends with both of them.

I like the "tell them they're both nuts" idea better. It has the advantage of almost always being true.

start smoking the pipe, it cripples your mouth and your psychology came across, less.

4 of my best friends are couples... if they break up, i'm gonna rough them up.

Couples do have that inherent habit of breaking up though.

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Or dying. Either way it's pretty shit.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if it's healthy, but I usually try to avoid talking about the relationship. If they start, I try to be a good listener, but not get over-emphatic in agreeing with them.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Look... just be cool. Hang out with both of them. Eventually you'll all get older and you'll stay friends with one or both or none of them. The important thing is, don't get freaked out. It's not your crisis.

Yeah, after a somewhat tense evening online and off, I'm officially Switzerland. I've got enough to worry about already.

Like that interview tomorrow afternoon! Snaps, oops.
