The people on this show act like they want to lose weight so they can have self-esteem. Losing weight is a nice idea, but shouldn't you have self-esteem whether you are fat or thin? Am I wildly humanistic here? THrow me a meat banana!

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so not googling "meat banana".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE THE HELL DID MY TIGER SHOW GO?

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, as if all the hits for "meat banana" won't just come back to you anyway, Dan.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't it pretty natural to have higher self-esteem after you acheive something? i.e., losing weight? i always feel better about myself when i do.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly Mr. Hanle y it will help their self-esteem to have set ambitious weight-loss goals and then followed tenaciously through on them, thereby proving to themselves that hard work and dedication can help them take control of any aspect of their lives that they care to improve.

Also, dude, have you heard the Red Krayola's "The Sword of God?" I heard this the other day and I swear to god I thought it was a Hanle y song.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

this show would be so much better if instead of voting someone off, they just ate them

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't that be counterproductive though? Unless they all ate equal portions, I guess.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they actually voting people off on this show? Because that seems like a sure-fire way to do some damage to someone with low self-esteem about their weight.

"Sorry, you haven't lost enough weight; get your gigantic ass out of here, Fatty McFailure."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

still, it doesn't come close to the soul-destroying self esteem dream hammer that is the swan.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha true! "We've made you pretty... BUT SORRY YOU ARE NOT PRETTY ENOUGH. BACK TO THE UGGO-PILE WITH YOU, MISS BUTTERFACE."

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

whoever invented that show got none of the girls in high school.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I was flipping channels the other night and caught a bit of the weighing ceremony, and yeah, that does seem to be sort of a problem. Apparently it's some kind of competition, so, you know, one guy loses 20 pounds, and his team cheers, and then the next guy's lost 5, and his whole team makes "you're pathetic" faces. Caroline Rea has to keep reminding them, you know, "Even one pound is good," and then everyone rolls their eyes and claps politely.

My concern: it can't be good for them to be losing upwards of 15 pounds a week, can it?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

buzz harsher!

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I have nevr hear Red Krayola. I would if napster still existed though.
The thing is there are plenty of people who are thin and have low-self esteem, so if you base your self-esteem on your weight it wont be real self-esteem. It will just be a crutch. Sure, you can be proud of losing weight, but its not like you are unloveable if you are fat. Besides, 80% of the freakin population is fat. If you are fat in America, you are pretty normal.

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

they got rid of the cute one last night, wtf

keep in mind i watched about two minutes of this

kephm (kephm), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

besides, there's fatty porn, so many find fatties quite electrifiying

Mike Hanle y 3000 (hanle y 3000), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I really hope Americans, while remaining attached to thinness as an "attractive" quality, keep getting fatter and fatter, thereby making me, without any effort, proportionally hotter and hotter.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

WORD

The Slimmer-Than-Average Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Then I will appear on Steve Harvey's long-running Big Time variety show and amaze people by looking at my own penis!

"... and I call these Shock and Awe."

BIG TIME! (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nabisco, you're really funny today!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What show were you all referring to?

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Did the show already start or will it begin in the near future?

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Started last night.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn!

Was it on at the same time as the Sox and Yankees game?

I knew A Rod was EVIL!! CHEATER!!!

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Aja...I remember you!

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and I remember you.

You know, I shadowed at a highschool today and everyone I met before said, "I remember you" or "Hi." Only one said, "Do I know you?" Another girl had to say, "That's Aja." One girl was surprised I remembered her name and I said, "How could I forget you?" She's a bit outspoken.

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

...Ok...

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you didn't have to reply. (Don't say ok. It's not witty.)

Aja (aja), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Right.

Nowell, Wednesday, 20 October 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if the weight loss these people get from this show will be maintained in the long-term? From what I have heard, weight loss achieved from such drastic dieting and exercising measures tends not to hold up in the long run. I do sincerely hope these people are able to keep their weight off and achieve their goals, but it's not like once you get back to the real world-- with its job demands, everyday stress, social gatherings with food, etc.-- that you have the time to spend all day exercising with a personal trainer pushing you at every step. I will be interested to see if they follow these people up 5 or 10 years from now, and what they are like...

It's ridiculous the way they're competing - it's who loses the most pounds, rather than the largest percentage of body weight, which would be more fair.

The woman on the commercials who says it will be easier for her to be loved if she loses weight really makes me sad.

Is she probably not right though, given the way society is?

I orginally read this as "vomiting someone off" and had a very different idea about the show.
