Sorry, rabbits aren't rodents - they're lagomorphs. Otherwise my rabbit would have been shown. Damn zoological classifications.

This is a pretty fun news story...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 23 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

they're lagomorphs

You make them sound like ALIENS.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 23 October 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't blame me, I didn't name the little varmints.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 23 October 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, that picture is entirely terrifying.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 24 October 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

These appear to be rats with drawn-in fangs, but in the movie they were German Sheppards with bad wigs and some kind of strap-on fangs.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 24 October 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, rabbits aren't rodents - they're lagomorphs.

And for that matter, bats are mammals.

Kenan (kenan), Sunday, 24 October 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Being a mammal doesn't preclude you from being a rodent, but bats are called chiroptera or something - and the poster acknowledge their unrodentness. Also, sadly, shrews and voles are not allowed I think (not too sure about voles, but definitely not shrews) as they are insectivores.

Ned, is the 'milk' picture from that temple in India?

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Sunday, 24 October 2004 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe so.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 1 November 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

voles = rodents
moles = insectivores (along with shrews, hedgehogs, tenrecs, desmonds, etc.)

there's a difference

and yeah, bats are chiropters and rabbits (along with hares and pikas) are lagamorphs. pikas also sometimes called coneys, as are guinea pigs (which are rodents) and hyraxes (which are not, though they look like they should be - their closest relatives are elephants!)

don't ask me how i know all this stuff. i just do.

chuck, Monday, 1 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

solenodons (which look like rats) also insectivores, in case anybody asks.

and tree shews actually prosimians, oddly enough!

and rat kangaroos and bandicoots are of course marsupials.

It's a Rodent Of Unusual Size!

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 1 November 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No-one commented on my 'giant guinea pig' story upthread, which makes me sad. I liked that the Peruvians seemed to think that the reason the west didn't eat guinea pigs is that they were too small, so a larger variety would change our minds. Thanks for the classification clarification, Chuck.

Hehehe well the original thread title was just "RODENTS! A picture thread" but then bats and rabbits and more prompted various demands up above for a thread title alteration.
