This man was not Christian Gross

Though I'm too young to remember his career, my Dad assures me that he was God. So long Mr Nicholson.

Even to Everton fans this man was a legend: if only for the 4-10.

I'll walk past Bill Nicholson Way on my way out to do some shopping shortly, and I suspect I will feel like saluting (and feel a fool for doing so).

Like Matt, my memories of Bill Nick are restricted to parental eulogies. I'll only say that my mum, who otherwise has absolutely no interest in football other than blaming it for half of society's ills et al, can still name the entire 1960-61 double side. Sat droopy-lipped through the first ten mins of Focus.

Maybe now ain't the time for this, but.. who else noticed that neither Pally nor Lawro had anything to say about Bill Nick other than the standard "Great man... much-loved... last of his kind" platitudes. Nothing actually specific. Anything that isn't Big Red Club (Cloughie notwithstanding) and they're all stumped...

Mike Ingham said quite a lot, about how his Spurs of the early 60s played perhaps the most attractive football ever seen in Britain.
