"War Of The Worlds" 2005 ?

So I was watching this 1953 classic on TV yesterday with my house mate and we were discussing whether or not a remake would be a good idea. And then I find this today :

"Spielberg and Cruise in remake of War of the Worlds"

Can anyone confirm whether it's true?

We were also talking about the brilliant booklet artwork from the Jeff Wayne musical version, which is darn hard to track down even on the net.

a movie about Orson Welles' radio adaptation would be better

stevie (stevie), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

We represent HG Wells and it's the first I've heard of a remake.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he doing much writing these days?

robster (robster), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:47 (twenty-one years ago)

He's working on the new Die Hard movie.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 25 October 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Die Hard IV or Yippee Ky-Ay, Mr. Lewisham

imdb has the 1953 film, the 1988 tv thing and a 2005 film.

and a 1998 documentary:
Martian Mania: The True Story of The War of the Worlds (1998) (TV)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOH-LAAAAAAAAAA

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The 1950s version was on C5 last night. Nowhere as good as the musical.

"The chances of anything coming from Mars were a million to one they said... but still... they CAME!!!"

That was playing over and over on the plane's sound system the first time we visited America. Still like it, though.

JimD, this is the CD, I was talking about the vinul version which comes with a large book with cool artwork. But I actually just wanted to see the pictures somewhere on the internet.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

("but still, they come" shurely)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ach, sorry, it's been 20 years since i heard it last, I'm terrible with lyrics anyway.

Kissing Time At The Pleasure Unit (kate), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe TEH MARTIANS have got into yr BRANE :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 25 October 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF?! So there's TWO movies planned, both set for release next year, according to 'imdb'(and other sites)

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was talking about the vinul version which comes with a large book with cool artwork

Yeah, I figured that, and I guess you're unlikely to find it, but the pictures are all in the booklet that comes with the cd too. (I've got both, but my vinyl one's up in manchester. Next time I'm up there, in a couple of weeks, I'll scan them all for you. I used to sit and gaze at them for hours when I was little, especially the one of the underground city...)

JimD (JimD), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Cool. The red weed pic was my fave, and the final one of the birds eating out of the machines.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 25 October 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the artwork in the vinyl version is sick, my dad has a copy of that displayed (along with some other knick knacks) on the mantle in our living room.

this spielberg-cruise movie, I sure as hell hope it isn't just a modern day "reworking" or some shit like that. i would love to see a big-budget version set in the Victorian era.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 25 October 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the other movie is the one that will be closest to the original HG Wells story, the Spielberg movie is going to be vastly different but I don't know in what way.

This is obviously from hearsay so I could be wrong.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 25 October 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well the spielberg version will prolly have better FX (ILM and all), but it would be so much cooler if the FX were applied to the original story.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 25 October 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

How the fuck can both movies be being made? The story is still in copyright ffs, it's not even possible to license 2 exclusive sets of rights, and they certainly wouldn't have accepted non-exclusivity, I'd have thought.

Actually, I should be the one answering these questions. Seems I don't do my job properly.

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

well GET ON IT! we are waiting...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

kick some spielbergian ass barry!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't Paramount still hold the rights after the 1953 film?

robster (robster), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah barry, the info I've gotten from the web is scattered to say the least. Film 2004 last night had a special on remakes but this wasn't mentioned at all, which is slightly suspect, although BBC's own website did first report on the Speilberg/Cruise venture in 2003.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Markelby, do you really represent HG Wells? Becuase I need someone to explain why there is an edition of War of the Worlds being sold on Amazon UK that lists MY MOTHER as a coauthor of the work?????

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahaha! Yes, we represent the film, TV, stage and radio rights. I can email you the contact details of the woman who reps the publishing rights if you like?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, sure, thanks! Maybe my mother and I can get to the bottom of this.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You have gmail! It's all very strange - your mum has no recollection of writing a book in 1905 or whenever?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 26 October 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
I can’t believe people aren’t talking about this more. I can’t wait for it!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 20 June 2005 10:24 (twenty years ago)

All the trailers I've seen have shown the Cruiser looking heroically confused and an adorable child looking scared followed by a bridge falling over. WHERE ARE THE GODDAMN MARTIANS??

robster (robster), Monday, 20 June 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

WHERE ARE THE GODDAMN MARTIANS

I’m sure Spielberg doesn’t want anyone to see them until they see the film. I’m glad they’re the tripod ones though I know that much. On one of the trailers you see one for about a second when the ferry gets tipped over.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 20 June 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah I'm fairly excited about this, it will be my first movie since the remake of Dawn ot Dead that I will go and watch at the flicks.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 20 June 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

i love any excuse for a movie with aliens wreaking havoc so i'm excited. as long as it's done well not even cruise can ruin it.

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:54 (twenty years ago)

the 1953 movie is SO classic, btw.

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Monday, 20 June 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

I, for one, am THRILLED that Tom Cruise is getting work. And playing a blue-coller regular Joe, no less! This part fits him like a glove. I am going to see this movie because I think Tom Cruise will be very convincing in the part, because he's, like, the Bruce Springsteen of actors.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

ba-bum-CHISH

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

fe zaffe (fezaffe), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:22 (twenty years ago)

latebloomer: We kissy kiss in the rear view (latebloomer), Monday, 20 June 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)
