brock (brock), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Wait for FFXII.

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

I've heard good things about Xenosaga but I've never played it.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Or get FFVII if you've never played it, because it is superior to all.

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Half of the best RPGs for PS2 are RPGs for PS1. We need mre details.
Do you prefer action RPGs where you still have to run and hack and slash with the controller or more like the FF series where you bump into monsters and switch to a turn-based sort of combat system?

The Baldur's Gate series are good action RPGs. I've had a bit of fun with those, but sometimes they fall just a bit short in the story department (me no like RPGs that can be beaten in a weekend)

Xenogears, Xenosaga, FF Tactics, uh, Shadow Hearts and the sequel to it are supposed to be good. I forgot what else.

Go read the Penny Arcade archives maybe.

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

anime ruined RPG's for PS2/Japan.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Seriously though the classics on PS1 are like where half the fun is at.
They've re-released FF Tactics even.
And fuck that, get an SNES emulator and find ROMs for

* chrono trigger
* terranigma
* whatever else Square/Enix put out for that system, I forgot already

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

FFIII!!!

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

is it necessary to have played like the previous FF games before jumping to FFVII ? i heard it's well good but i have no idea what the story is about etc.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:24 (twenty years ago)

bnw is a fag

(though I will agree on one point, which is that playing Xenosaga I have already been a little disturbed by the amount of unnecessary "fan service" thigh/cleavage/near-upskirt shots going on during the video segments)

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

No, there's still the same general themes etc. but the stories are not cumulative.

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Nobody knows WTF the story is in anything Square puts out, the FF series is non-sequential (AFAIK the only constant is the structure of the magic system)

Xenogears is a total fucking classic btw

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

FFVII is actually still so popular that Square is releasing a CG movie called Advent Children as a "sequel."

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

the worst part of all the japanese "rpgs" is all the collecting bullshit. Like you got the secret golden feather! it doesn't change the game at all, but hey, you can tell all your friends!

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago)

yea i've played a good majority of the FFs/ chronotrigger ruled.
i might have to go get tactics. i heard its REAL hard.

brock (brock), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Why is FFVII so popular? What happened there?
Also you can like get a FF collection that has all the classics on it right, like the Mega Man collection? I think that just came out, somebody made some comment that the original FF1 for NES only had a few hours of gameplay in it and didn't take that long to beat and I was like WHAT. FUCK YOU. THAT THING TOOK ME LIKE HALF A SCHOOL YEAR.

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Have you not read "Yuffie's Chocobo"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Have you seen this message board, I believe it is called I Love Music?

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

A modest review of FFVII

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:33 (twenty years ago)

The number one reason why FFVII is actually a tool of Satan

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:34 (twenty years ago)

"Final Fantasy VII's moving plot is influenced by some of the greatest works of science fiction film and literature, including Frank Herbert's Dune, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and even Godzilla."

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Why did you do that Dan

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:36 (twenty years ago)

FFX-2 is really fun. You run around, you hit things, there are silly minigames (The sub minigame was one of my favoruite things about FFVII, along with everything else).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

It was brought up recently that Ally might take my all-region DVD player and I might take her PS2, is this the road to hell?

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

FFX-2 is ready-made slash.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

And it's pretty much impossible get the best ending unless you play with a walkthrough from the get go. It was fun, but disposable. The entertaining fling of the FF franchise.

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking that too byron, just reading the storyline on Amazon I'm like oh god this game is totally based offa somebody's disgustingly emo fanfic isn't it

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

I have just added FF: Origins, FF: Anthology, FF: Chronicles, FFVIII and Chrono Cross to my amazon wish list ALL BECAUSE OF BROCK.

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I meant VII not VIII

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

re: X-2 There's a scene where they decide to momentarily derail the plot to go to a hot spring and prance around in swimsuits for no reason.

Laura E (laurae55), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago)

Haha not even Dead Or Alive is that gratuitous! (NOTE: I have not seen the volleyball game)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Haha yes, the pitch for the game must have started "you have the girls from the first game, and you get to dress them up..." and when the sperm had settled the game had been approved, nobody knew how.

FFVII is a) the second killer app for the PlayStation, and b) the first introduction the the world of "you do this thing repeatedly, and you get a story pellet/new abilities", which all games do, but Square does best. It's guaranteed reward for activity.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:52 (twenty years ago)

big strikes against FF and the like:

- not enough customization of characters
- lifeless npc's treat everyone the same
- too much cuteness

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

so am i going to buy xenosaga??

brock (brock), Monday, 1 November 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago)

I think you are.
You gotta track down Xenogears too though.

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago)

def. gonna do that. both look rad.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 1 November 2004 19:59 (twenty years ago)

should i play xenogears before xenosaga

brock (brock), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Is KOTOR out for PS2? It must be, right?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

No. No, it's not.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:30 (twenty years ago)

HA HA

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 1 November 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

brock: no

TOMBOT, Monday, 1 November 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Xenogears is a better game, but with one FUCKED UP translation of a storyline.

also, Xenogears inspired this wonderful treatise on religious imagery in video games.

also, i second getting Chrono Trigger. Chrono Cross, its "sequel", is kinda...well, it has its charms.

also, GET DARK CLOUD 2! if nothing else, just for when you can build your own robot to ride around in.

Also, Front Mission 3, if you like turn-based games with big fuckin' robots blasting each other.

Sir Kingfish Beavis D'Azzmonch (Kingfish), Monday, 1 November 2004 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Where is my head? Yes, get Dark Cloud 2! Because it's pretty and smart and all of that, but also so that you can kill everything in a level using your twee robot, and then settle down to have a nice game of golf/fishing in the now quiet expanse.
