so, what are you doing for bonfire night this year?

does anyone have fireworks that they especially suggest?

i love fireworks in the fall. and add funfairs and carnival food to the mix, and i'm one happy girl!

i'm really not liking this fireworks thing. not to sound like a killjoy, but kids on the estate have been setting them off around the clock for the past three weeks and it's ANNOYING. is it evil to daydream about blown-off limbs and shot-out eyes?

Alexandra Palace and Blackheath are the two big ones, north and south of the river. Both have funfairs and stuff and Ally Pally has an ICE RINK! I've been to both and they're fantastic.

There's also one on Clapham Common, but I think thats on Friday.

I was going to start this thread!
I am going to my local firework display this year & it's on Saturday. On Friday I shall probably try to keep my kittens from going mad with all of the loud bangs.

There's also one at Battersea Park, which I've never been to, but I imagine it looks pretty spectacular from the north side of the river.

EVERYTHING'S BETTER FROM THE NORTH SIDE OF THE RIVER

Meanwhile in the absence of Tim H I am duty-bound to point out that this is the best night ever.

In the unlikely event of anyone but Nick S being in a position to get down there, of course...

I am worried about my cat, and how he will react; or if any teenagers will fire fireworks at him.

We're not having fireworks at home this year. There's a public display about 15 minutes' walk away; if the weather's decent, we might go along.

I have a pathological fear of fireworks. They sound too much like gunshots or explosions. I always think it's the sound of the coming revolution and want to barricade myself in my room, hide the valuables and board up the windows.

i agree with you. the kids on my estate like to throw fireworks at people walking past. i will seriously kick some ass if they try this with me.

however, i like fireworks that are run by people with knowledge and skill. probably trying to get to some on friday and sat. maybe alexandra palace on saturday, since i have a birthday party that evening up north somewhere? i want to ice skate as well!

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Glasgow Green, same as last year. They are doing a seventies theme which sounds intriguing. We won't be driving in though, last year trying to get home was horrendous.

We'll just get a taxi to town and round the night off with a few drinks ;-)

I'm going to Alexandra Palace on Saturday, it's only 10 mins walk from my flat so dead handy like.

Last went to bonfire night there 3 years ago I think, it was pretty good and you get a great view of central London and all the fireworks going off everywhere else as well.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 16:39 (twenty years ago)

i'm going to some on friday, probably in roundwood park i think (the only north london option). i wanted to go to some on saturday, too, i think that's when the best ones will be, but it's my best friend's birthday/going away party so i don't think i will be.

I'm going to Lewes as usual, which gives those crazy Devonians a run for their money as any fule no. As I get older the sheer health and safety nightmare of the whole thing has started to pall a bit, not to mention the undercurrent of religious intolerance. But what the hell, big parades and costumes and torches and floats and stuff! Whole town insane for one night only! Woo!

I guess I'm not doing anything! There don't seem to be any organised displays around this way...

So, I guess it'll be sparkler's in the backyard, wahoo.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 2 November 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

ooh, sparklers. i'd forgotten all about them. must remember to buy some...

Stuff from the Glasgow City Council website

with an amazing finale that will be set to a well-known song that people will not only recognise, but will get them dancing all over Glasgow Green.

This sounds alarmingly like horribly organised Fun (capital F intended). I shall be avoiding like the plague, but if Rumpy could report back as to what it is, I would be grateful. I went one year (possibly with Ally C) and they appeared to be burning an effigy of former Lord Provost Pat Lally. They won't top that, I bet.

I used to work in a top floor city centre office with rooftop access which was an ace place to watch the Glasgow Green fireworks from. This year I guess I won't venture further than Paisley.

There's going to be a mass Macarena in Glasgow, mark my words.

I am watching the Blackheath display and then having people back to mine for mulled wine and other warming winter drinks (recommendations please, I need to think happy thoughts).

jel, ravenscourt park usually does a display and that's not a million miles from you. don't know about dates or times (there was SOMETHING happening on the walk home last night but may have just been the local kids firebombing another shop)

ah, the 6th, from 18:30

I think our local bonfire night was last weekend, at least I hope so from the level of BANGS that had nothing to do with Brixton gang warfare. I want to go out, but I don't have the money to do anything party-ish. Chuck is DJ-ing at Mother, and crikey, I used to spend half my life in that damn bar (cowboy hat, fishnets and all) ... I never used to need money to go to Mother, but I don't know if that's a part of my life I should be revisiting right now.

My cats are housebound for the whole w/e!
