Help Me Engineer A Democratic Revolution in the South

We've all heard about how the Republicans have been building their hold in the south gradually since the 1960s. Time for us to start taking it back. Here are a couple of ideas:

1) Increase support for moderate and liberal religious organizations. It's too easy to win a fight that's couched as "God" vs. "Godless". We need to level this playing field.

2) Fund awareness raising campaigns about the science behind evolution, and about why it's silly to think a fertilized egg is a human life.

3) Start a Move-On like organization that is more tailored towards Southern (and other red-state) youth. De yankee-fy it. Win them over when they're young.

4) More recruitment on college campuses -- even ones that are mostly democrat already. Too few talented young people are interested in working for the party they support.

One friend suggested running a NASCAR driver for president.

Let the south secede again, but give me free passage to the North.

I've considered that, believe me.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 07:33 (twenty years ago)

why have they sold their votes, seemingly, on "homeland security"? surely, this is of no importance, to them, since no-one would be slightly interested in thinking about bothering to attempt to bomb anything remotely near them.

I heard one, about texans thinking the obvious #2 TERROR TARGET (after the world trade center) was the alamo.

otherwise---I have no idea etc.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 07:33 (twenty years ago)

People are self-centered. I remember right after 9/11, a lot of people near me were terrified. It's urban/suburban North Texas, with no defense industries, no major banking centers, etc. We weren't in danger. But I couldn't very well say that to any of them.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Even at the time I could sort of forgive people for thinking that way (maybe there was going to be a nationwide wave of terror!) but now it's just absurd.

Obviously it's not, or America wouldn't have voted with their safety in mind!

RJG homeland security was not the issue of the 2004 election, homo security was

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 09:03 (twenty years ago)

Where are the southern states where God Fearing Men have to bar their doors to keep out the homos, and how can I move there?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago)

Okay then, I'm going to start a homosexual tolerance movement in Texas, one Texan man at a time.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 10:49 (twenty years ago)

Blount, why are you so sure of what the election turned on? Just a feeling from what people have been saying, or what?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 11:04 (twenty years ago)

It's time for right-thinking Americans to
a) move to red states
b) buy weapons
c) engage in ass-fucking
d) start an evangelical effort against godless movement conservatism

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 11:52 (twenty years ago)

or e) convert them to Judaism/Islam/Buddhism
and f) save their kids' education from control by the American Taliban

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 11:55 (twenty years ago)

Most of the evangelicals home school their kids, it would be a difficult situation to change.
