I just heard it on NPR.

Hopefully the election threads will thin out now.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

? I think it's premature, seriously (despite assuming that Bush is going to win at this point).

x-post: So we can go back to the usual room-mates having anal sex on white couches threads? What a relief.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

You'd have to ask Gear. I'm just waiting for more hockey threads.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:23 (twenty years ago)

There's still plenty of discussion left for:
What went wrong?
Why do people hate gays so much?
We are Doomed.
Fucking American Idiots.
American Idiots: Stop Fucking.

Do Republicans Have Butt Sex on Couches Which Aren't Theirs?
Did Trucker Hats Loose Kerry The Elecation?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:26 (twenty years ago)

What went wrong? I'm just going to go with "fixed electronic voting machines". I think it's quite funny when my news guy tells me there have been relatively few problems with them when there is no way to really tell.

redfez, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:27 (twenty years ago)

if you guys are so put out by the number of election threads, stop posting to them.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

When does the rioting begin?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

I really don't know what to say about this. I've had a sadness and anger breakdown - my grief and rage are too widespread and ill-aimed for me to be coherent.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 16:28 (twenty years ago)

he got Nevada as well so thats 274 EC votes.

the democrats nominated a long winded new england haircut with no self respect

So much for wanting every vote counted.

Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Kerry about to give concession speech. (running late - maybe at 1:30..)

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:01 (twenty years ago)

If his concession speech doesn't resemble something like the video for Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized" I'll be massively disappointed.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Can John Edwards ride a skateboard?

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Edwards is speaking now.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - I have to go to a boring fucking meeting. Fuck meetings and fuck Edwards & Kerry for being an hour late.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Edwards will run in '08. I (still) like his speechifying a lot.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Kerry on now. I feel like I'll be somewhat "at peace" this morning after hearing this.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm watching his live speech on BBC2 and it's making me sadder than anything else has so far. I suppose the denial is giving way to sad acceptance. My heart is sinking.

sgs (sgs), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago)

"We still got your back!"
"Thank you, man."

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

What's funny is that he's seeming more human & likeable right now than ever.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:05 (twenty years ago)

"What's funny is that he's seeming more human & likeable right now than ever."

That's crap. He's exactly like he has always been now, it's just that everyone got caught up in the RoveCo spin. What a shitty election.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, you might be right, I'm trying to will him some charisma!

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:16 (twenty years ago)

More pseudo-twelve-steppin' conciliatory bullshit. No, Sen. Kerry, what we need is a strong loyal opposition.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I honestly can't believe how bad I feel. I mean, my expectations were low...but I didn't expect to feel this...well...defeated. It's horrible. Not just being histrionic or melodramatic here, either.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

i'm there too, alex

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm not contributing to any of the other threads here, partly because I feel too crazy to make much sense right now, partly because other people are expressing it in a way that I just can't do, but can I just register my abject despair? OK, thanks:

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm at my mom and stepdad's house, in part to prepare a Christmas gift for my dad (long story) but it's suddenly become difficult to imagine going to his place for Christmas without screaming at him.

(Dad's a long-time Republican -- I even found his name on an online list of people contributing to the elect-Arnie campaign; my stepmom actually went out and campaigned for Bush in '80!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:39 (twenty years ago)

I should really get off ILX right now, as I'm practically incapable of writing anything remotely intelligent (I know, I know...Why Start Now, Alex?). Seriously, though, I'm filled with such contempt and bitterness and incredulity that I'm bound to type something that (a) makes no sense (b) contradicts itself and (c) sweepingly offends a great many of people. With that, I'm signing off for a while. Be back later. Be good, kids.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 19:56 (twenty years ago)

Here he goes.

"Four more years!" is such an ugly chant, from anyone.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:04 (twenty years ago)

He said 'an historic'. I hate it already.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I want to believe his sincerity, but all I can think is "bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit..."

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago)

why do you want to believe it?

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I actually DO want to support the president if possible.. I hope that we can all come together & actually accomplish something good in the next 4 years.. But I think he's lost all credibility.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago)

He just mentioned Iraq and Afghanistan to cheers. I feel sick again.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Today is a pretty nauseating day for Kerry supporters. I didn't even bother watching the Bush acceptance speech — why bother watching a bunch of old white fucks applauding their mascot every 10 seconds?

PS FUCK FUCK FUCK

It's funny, or perhaps not, but the cutaways on CNN to the crowd revealed a grouping of tall, hott, YOUNG white men by a vast majority. Some white females and elderly honkies also scattered about, but alas I didn't even glimpse any token coloreds.

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 22:28 (twenty years ago)

honkies and coloreds? what was this, an episode of The Jeffersons?

Kenan (kenan), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I wish. Did you see it?

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago)

Although I'm from Estonia (near Finland yo know) I'm feeling terribly bad. Although friends are saying "Bush is making himself more fool, you`ll see" etc. but someway I have bad feel like left-wing German in 1932 everybody is sayng "Hitler can`t succeed, you`ll see".
Meanwhile, Hungary and Holland juts announced that they´re pulling their troops out from Iraq next year.

Heh, really. Amusing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago)

email from kerry campaign made me cry:

Dear Anthony,

Earlier today I spoke to President Bush, and offered him and Laura our congratulations on their victory. We had a good conversation, and we talked about the danger of division in our country and the need, the desperate need, for unity for finding the common ground, coming together. Today, I hope that we can begin the healing.

In America, it is vital that every vote counts, and that every vote be counted. But the outcome should be decided by voters, not a protracted legal process. I would not give up this fight if there was a chance that we would prevail. But it is now clear that even when all the provisional ballots are counted, which they will be, there won't be enough outstanding votes for our campaign to be able to win Ohio. And therefore, we cannot win this election.

It was a privilege and a gift to spend two years traveling this country, coming to know so many of you. I wish I could just wrap you in my arms and embrace each and every one of you individually all across this nation. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.

To all of you, my volunteers and online supporters, all across this country who gave so much of themselves, thank you. Thanks to William Field, a six-year-old who collected $680, a quarter and a dollar at a time selling bracelets during the summer to help change America. Thanks to Michael Benson from Florida who I spied in a rope line holding a container of money. It turned out he raided his piggy bank and wanted to contribute. And thanks to Alana Wexler, who at 11 years old and started Kids for Kerry.

I thank all of you, who took time to travel, time off from work, and their own vacation time to work in states far and wide. You braved the hot days of summer and the cold days of the fall and the winter to knock on doors because you were determined to open the doors of opportunity to all Americans. You worked your hearts out, and I say, don't lose faith. What you did made a difference, and building on itself, we will go on to make a difference another day. I promise you, that time will come -- the election will come when your work and your ballots will change the world, and it's worth fighting for.

I'm proud of what we stood for in this campaign, and of what we accomplished. When we began, no one thought it was possible to even make this a close race, but we stood for real change, change that would make a real difference in the life of our nation, the lives of our families, and we defined that choice to America. I'll never forget the wonderful people who came to our rallies, who stood in our rope lines, who put their hopes in our hands, who invested in each and every one of us. I saw in them the truth that America is not only great, but it is good.

So here -- with a grateful heart, I leave this campaign with a prayer that has even greater meaning to me now that I've come to know our vast country so much better and that prayer is very simple: God bless America.

Thank you,

John Kerry

Dan Quisenberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like that e-mail is the same as his concession speech.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

xx-post
And there won't be, Alex, because we're a nation of complacent f*cks. It feels like I'm living in a Bizarro U.S. now, and I need to get out. Seriously.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

I have bad feel like left-wing German in 1932 everybody is sayng "Hitler can`t succeed, you`ll see".

Even Hitler wasn't this unpopular outside his own country.

Peace In Our Time, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago)

(which doesn't say much for world-popularity as barometer, but we get you)

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

we're a nation of complacent f*cks

I'm sure the near-half of the nation that voted for Kerry appreciates your concern.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Near-half the voters, Ned.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Speaking conceptually here, m'friend.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

next time I'm gonna near half vote for Ned. And I will make it count.

aimurchie, Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm at my mom and stepdad's house, in part to prepare a Christmas gift for my dad (long story) but it's suddenly become difficult to imagine going to his place for Christmas without screaming at him.

I sympathize with you, Michael. I am now contemplating a christmas in the Midwest with a huge crowd of inlaws who would have overwhelmingly voted for Bush. It's enough that I usually have to hear about "the gays on tv" and "the Mexican problem" in Indiana. Last year, I had to hold my tongue when speaking with my father in-law about the failure of US troops to protect the Iraqi National Museum from looters. "We're not there to protect the place" he said. Grrrrrrrr!

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:04 (twenty years ago)

My dad is more of a fiscal conservative than a culture warrior (talking about "teh gays" and "teh Mexicans" would just be too tacky) though actually this is something of an educated guess considering I haven't had a substanstive conversation with him in ages.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Right, it was more the potential for screaming matches that I think we have in common.

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

my (much older) half-brothers are bush supporters. i normally just call them my 'brothers', but.. yeah. when things start getting heated at gatherings, i just agree to disagree, but i don't know how i'm going to show that kind of restraint next time we meet.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Are they in South Africa too?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:22 (twenty years ago)

It seems that way from your "gatherings' comment at least. What possible justification do they have for supporting him?

adam... (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah, adam, they are.

they think bush is strong on israel and hard on arabs. something he said to me a couple weeks ago disgusted me to such a degree that i'm ashamed to even relate it here (and be related to him, for that matter). since bro turned family man, he's gone quite disturbingly pro-israel fundie. it's very sad, i used to like the way he thought.

i think my other brother just gets a kick out of moral certainty. somewhat ironically, his left brain is one of the best i've encountered.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago)

plus i fear my arizonian sister and her husband (the rabbi) would've actually voted bush, had they registered. not that it would've mattered in even the slightly bigger scheme of things.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:31 (twenty years ago)

couple days ago an aquaintance who runs a local jewish youth organization forwarded me a letter from an american rabbi explaining why it violated jewish principles to vote for bush. not very inspiring stuff tho, esp as regards the 'kerry is an unconditional friend to israel too!' line, but that's just me.

m. (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

My mother *COULD NOT WAIT* to call and gloat today.

..and people wonder why I'm so angry all the time.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 4 November 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

arent all US politicians 'unconditional friends of israel'? isnt that the problem here people?

still bevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Got up at 5am to watch. By that time; Florida already gone, Ohio looking grim; reporters shouting above Republican hollering parties, reporters milling in the damp of Boston; 'advisers have disappeared'; anticipation of the horrible, exhausting weeks and months of litigation. It was best just to get it over.

Left for work at 7am (almost an hour early) just to get away. The deserted streets, the dark, whichever song came on seemed to fuel the feeling of hopelessness.

First John Peel, now this. We're losing. We're just losing.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:14 (twenty years ago)

Did you ask her what exactly she was pleased about?

Doesn't work that way, really. I fear the my mother is largely indicative of the majority of dyed-in-the-wool Republicans -- they believe every little soundbyte/talking point they're fed. She's never met a Republican attack ad she didn't heartily endorse. To hear my mother spin it, John Kerry was actually a double-agent for the Viet Cong.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

She went on for fuckin' DAYS about how "classless" Theresa Heinz Kerry was for saying "shove it" to an aggressive journalist, but did she utter a single "gasp" when it was reported that Cheney told someone to go fuck themselves? Of course not.

She's evil. And not in a fun, Dio/Slayer sort've way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, had to correct a spelling error and add an extra point.

Men are allowed to say such things, women are not, Alex, hello?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:20 (twenty years ago)

mr teeny's asshole right-wing stepdad sent us a hallmark 'with sympathies' e-card 'hanoi jane must be crying, the voters have spoken, blah blah' etc. mr teeny vowed to put him in a bad senior home when social security dries up.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 4 November 2004 01:58 (twenty years ago)

i dunno how my dad ended up voting. he's republican, but at least this 4th of july he was entertaining the notion of voting for kerry. either way, he isn't one to gloat (the part of him raised by ardent new deal dems and who worshipped JFK as a young man hasn't died completely).

i also got that form e-mail from john kerry. i know that it was a form e-mail sent to millions on the DNC mailing list, but i cannot delete it just yet either. *sigh*

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:47 (twenty years ago)

Men are allowed to say such things, women are not, Alex, hello?

Fair point, Ally, but that's not the case in this instance -- it's just a double standard in my mother's case. Trust me on this one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:49 (twenty years ago)

question for those who can remember the '84 election

can we all stop shrieking, please?, Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:52 (twenty years ago)

arent all US politicians 'unconditional friends of israel'? isnt that the problem here people?

There are many, MANY things ahead of that when it comes to "the problem."

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2004 02:57 (twenty years ago)

It's not a problem at all, I think a Palestinian State is in Israel's best interests too. A good friend is one who tells you if you're being a cock, rather than just blindly backing you up on it.
