ok talk about this

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=30881

Summary:
1) need ID to vote
2) need proof of citizenship in order to register to vote
3) ID/proof of citizenship in order to get public services (ie welfare, non-emergency hospital services)

a couple other things I forgot. What do you think.

Proposition 200 succeeded despite a million-dollar campaign organized by powerful labor unions, business interests and clergy from several Christian denominations.

And who says there's not hope for an socialist, anti-capitalistic, secular society in America anymore?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

See, at first that amazed me, but then I remembered Arizona is also the state that resisted a Martin Luther King holiday for a very, very long time despite bizarro threats from the NFL (???!?!?!).

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I registered by mail and when I went to vote all it took was me saying my own name out loud to get a ballot card. This probably explains why DC is 90% Democratic, because of all the voter fraud this system encourages.

Vote fraud is a straw man for republican assholes. What a pile of shit. Such an easy issue though to pass, WATCH OUT THE BEANER IS STEALING YOUR VOTE, AND TAX MONEYS AIEEEE.

Proof of citizenship to vote = waste of everybody's time really.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago)

This is the wrong law to fix what I see as a nonexistent problem. People be afraid of some stupid shit, but maybe I just really don't know what I'm talking about.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm more interested in proof of citizenship before receiving public services than I am in the voting issue. I mean I lived in AZ. I'm sorry, but the vast majority of illegal immigrants are not going out and registering to vote illegally. Voter fraud is a strawman hiding a much more insiduous issue in that proposition.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit. I heard about that proposition. Which "public benefits" won't it cover?

I can only hope it'll be found unconstitutional, like Prop 187 was here in California.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really sure it should be considered unconstitutional, not knowing much about Prop 187. I'm not really sure an illegal immigrant is entitled to food stamps and WIC. I do know that this also affects hospital treatment though, which is a much slipperier slope.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but they're taling only about public services which are not federally mandated - what specifically does that refer to then?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Here's some info I just found. I'm just... I don't know what to say anymore, today.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago)

AH AH AH AH AH I see my misunderstanding by reading the one article--the state employees don't deny them benefits; they just have to turn them in to immigration.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Tom the important thing about that checklist is the precursor that states that "While food stamps is a national program, each state reserves the right to change certain things..."

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago)

I know for a fact that, as of the early and mid 90s, you did not have to provide the SSNs of your household when applying for food stamps in Arizona.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Is this saying you have to have a passport to go the emergency room?

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 3 November 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago)

http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/special2/articles/0919prop200-details19.html

"Regardless of what voters decide in November, Arizona hospitals will continue to provide medical services to all who show up at their emergency rooms. They must do so under federal law. But the law would crack down on undocumented immigrants who seek other health services.

State officials say they would be unable to provide vaccines to those who can't prove citizenship. They would also have to check the legal status of every patient seeking treatment for illnesses including sexual transmitted diseases, childhood lead poisoning and hepatitis C."
